College Football: Petras, Iowa Close Spring Drills

Iowa City — Spencer Petras is in the early lead for the starting quarterback gig at the University of Iowa this fall.

Petras and the Hawkeyes closed spring practices Saturday with an open practice at Kinnick Stadium.

The 6’5′ senior from San Rafael, California is in a hotly contested race with Alex Padilla and redshirt freshman Joe Labas.

Petras has started 19 games the past two seasons while Padilla started three games last season while Petras was injured.

Labas has yet to appear in a game.

All three guys are growing. All three are different discussions. But they’re all growing. Joe is behind the other two in terms of knowing what to do. This was really helpful for him” said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz.

Iowa will open their 2022 season on Saturday, September 3rd when they take on South Dakota State in Iowa City.
