Late Wednesday afternoon Iowa Wesleyan University issued the following statement addressing an incident that occurred April 12.  A Mount Pleasant teen was shot during a large fight that involved several University students that occurred along the north edge of the local campus…..

Something like this happening near campus is alarming and unusual, and having our own students involved in some way is certainly inconsistent with the welcoming, safe and inclusive environment we work hard to create and foster here at Iowa Wesleyan. While these acts of violence are common elsewhere, they do not happen here at Iowa Wesleyan or in Mount Pleasant. Sadly, we witnessed an act of unnecessary violence and experienced the fear that comes with having our safety compromised.

We are taking steps to provide safety and comfort to our students who were surprised and upset by last night’s events. The five students who were criminally charged related to this incident will be addressed through our university’s student code of conduct process.

The university is fully cooperating with law enforcement and any further questions regarding this incident, including the names of individuals arrested and their specific charges, should be referred to the Mt. Pleasant Police Department. 

RE: Shots fired call UPDATE

On 4/12/22 at approximately 20:33 hours, the Mt Pleasant Police Department was dispatched to the W Broad St. and N Jackson St area for a call of a large fight. While enroute officers were notified of shots fired.

As a result of the investigation the following people have been charged:

Decobi Davis age 19 formerly from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. –

Reckless Use of a Firearm resulting in serious injury, a Class C felony and Participating in a Riot, an Aggravated Misdemeanor.

Joseph McNeese age 19, formerly of Texas,- Participating in a Riot, an Aggravated Misdemeanor.

James Williams age 21, formerly of Chicago IL,- Participating in a Riot, an Aggravated Misdemeanor.

De’kunta Mason Jr age 19, formerly of New Orleans, LA, -Disorderly Conduct a simple Misdemeanor

J’cauri Morris age 19, formerly of Houston, TX. -Disorderly Conduct a simple Misdemeanor

Vernell Trent age 18 of Mt Pleasant. – Disorderly Conduct a simple Misdemeanor

There will also be four local juveniles charged with Disorderly Conduct a simple Misdemeanor.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The investigation is still ongoing and there is no concern for public safety. There will be further follow up and more charges may be forthcoming.

There is numerous video footage that has been turned in. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Mt Pleasant PD.

At 4:28 PM Tuesday April 12 the Burlington Fire Department was dispatched to Gulfport,
IL for a motor-vehicle accident with 2 trapped inside the vehicle. Firefighters arrived 3 minutes
later and found bystanders on scene with one vehicle on it’s top in a drainage ditch inside the
village of Gulfport. The drainage ditch was filled with water, submerging over half of the
vehicle. Firefighters entered the water to make access to the vehicle and found 1 victim and 1
dog inside of the submerged vehicle. Firefighters successfully removed the dog and continued to
work to gain access to the entrapped victim. At 4:46, firefighters removed the victim successfully
and initiated CPR.
Prior to departing the scene, the victim regained consciousness and patient care was transferred
to Medforce Aeromedical Transport. The victim’s name and final condition are not being
released at this time. The dog was left in the care of Henderson County’s Animal Control officer.
The family of the victim and the owners of the dog have been notified.
Eleven Burlington firefighters responded to the call including two off-duty fire officers that were
present at Central Station at the time of call. Medforce Aeromedical, Burlington Police,
Henderson County Sheriff’s, and Gladstone Fire Departments assisted with the response. No first
responders were injured.

Henry County Jail

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.
