Donald J. Wiseman, 81, of New London passed away on Monday, April 18, 2022, at the New London Specialty Care Center in New London.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Monday, April 25, 2022, at the Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant where the family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening.  Burial will be held in the White Pidgeon Cemetery at North English at a later date.

Janet Elaine Asby Schroder

Janet Elaine Asby Schroder, 85, of Danville, died Saturday, March 19,

2022 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, West Burlington.  She was born February 28, 1937 in Burlington to Frederick Morris and Ethel Marie Bohlen Asby.  On July 16, 1953, she married Elliott “Turk” Schroder in Burlington; He died March 8, 1999.

She was a graduate of Danville High School, and while raising her children, graduated from Surgical Technician Training at Burlington Medical Center where she was employed for more than thirty years.  Janet loved her time on the family farm, was a good sketch artist, enjoyed flower gardening and feeding the wild birds, loved her dogs and cats, was a fun and indulgent grandmother, and especially cherished her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter Terri Heffelfinger of Danville; sons David of Danville, previously of California and Miles (Jeana) of Danville; daughter-in-law Kelly Schroder of Red Oak; seven grandchildren, Heather (Trent) Henkelvig, Allison (Ken) Jones, Elizabeth Schroder, Tony Schroder, Alexandra Nelson, Calleen Nelson, and Nicholas Nelson; eight great-grandchildren, Reagan, Addy, Hayden, Sawyer, Rylee, Penelope, Olivia, and Logan; sister Mary Ann (Larry) Root of Cedar Rapids and sister-in-law Margie Asby of Solon.  Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son Paul; daughter-in-law Cindy Murray Schroder; son-in-law Robert Heffelfinger; and brother David Asby.

According to her wishes her body has been cremated.  An open house Celebration of Life for Mrs. Schroder will be held April 24, 2022 from

2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Danville Station in Danville.  A memorial has been established for the Danville Community School District Foundation. Elliott Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.

Anamosa Inmate from Ottumwa Found Dead

On Tuesday, the Iowa Department of Corrections announced the death of Anthony Steven Spurgeon. Spurgeon, who is from Ottumwa, was pronounced dead around 9 a.m. on Monday. Authorities say his death appears to be a suicide. The Iowa Department of Corrections will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Spurgeons death. Spurgeon was serving a 15-year maximum term at the Anamosa State Penitentiary for the crime of Habitual Offender and other charges out of Wapello County. He began serving his sentence August 27, 2018.

Daily Jail Count

Henry County Jail

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Girls’ Track: Brumbaugh Soars Again, Panthers Finish 2nd at Home Invite

Mount Pleasant — Jadan Brumbaugh’s winning shot put heave of 44 feet, 10.5 inches was three feet over the meet record held by Mary Wester, as Mount Pleasant finished second at the 2022 Panther Invite last night.

Sophomore Elsie Lange won the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 7.75 inches, continuing her strong run of performances.

Mount Pleasant won two other events: Abby Blint in the 1,500m (5:28.03) and the shuttle hurdle relay group of Kenna Lamm, Abby Blint, Allie Westercamp and Jenna Gilmore went 1:09.71 for first.

Williamsburg won the Class A team title with 130 points, while Mount Pleasant finished in second. Iowa City Liberty placed third.

In Class B, Pekin was the team champion with 129 points. Danville placed second with Wapello, Mediapolis and Cardinal rounding out the top-five.

Danville was led by Kenna Furnald who won the long jump springing 15 feet, 5.75 inches.

Keetyn Townsley won the 100m hurdles for the Lady Wolves, she ran 17.39. Jobey Malone was the champion of the Class B shot put for Winfield-Mount Union. Her winning toss was 36 feet, 5.5 inches.

Boys’ Golf: Matheny Second as Panthers Win ND Invite

Burlington — Nick Matheny carded an 81, good for second place overall as Rob Zeglen’s Mount Pleasant boys’ golf team earned a team title of the Notre Dame Invitational yesterday.

Van Buren County’s T.J. Jirak was the meet medalist. Jirak finished with an 80 — one stroke better than that of Matheny.

Reece Kempker finished fifth in the individual standings after shooting an 85.

Van Buren County ended up in second in the team race, with Fort Madison, Davis County and Notre Dame rounding out the top-five.

Winfield-Mount Union placed seventh.

The Wolves were led by Carter Loyd, who finished in a tie for 10th after shooting a 95.

Other boys’ golf:

  • New London 196, Mediapolis 207
    • Wyatt Miller led New London with a low round score of 42 as the Tigers dispatched Mediapolis for a dual win at Deerwood Golf and Country Club. Mediapolis was led by Grant Hilton, who finished in second in the individual race with a score of 45.
