Men’s College Basketball: Iowa State Ousted by Canes

Chicago — Kameron McGusty scored 27 points and Miami advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time, using its swarming defense to beat Iowa State 70-56 in the NCAA Tournament on Friday night.

Jordan Miller added 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting as No. 10 seed Miami was the winner in a matchup of two of the tourney’s most suffocating defenses. The 11th-seeded Cyclones shot 32% from the field in the second half and finished with 18 turnovers.

Iowa State (22-13) rode its hard-nosed defense into the Midwest Region semifinals after it had just two wins last season. It forced 14 turnovers after Miami turned it over seven times in the first two rounds, but the Hurricanes shot 46% from the field. The Cyclones allowed 33.3% shooting over their first two tourney games.

Gabe Kalscheur scored 13 points for Iowa State, and freshman Tyrese Hunter had 13 points and seven assists. Izaiah Brockington finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Women’s College Basketball: Lady Clones Defeated by Upstart Creighton

Greensboro (N.C.) — Iowa State (28-7, 14-4 Big 12) could not keep its magical, record-breaking season going as the Cyclones fell to Creighton (23-9, 15-5 BIG East) 76-68 Friday night in Greensboro Coliseum in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship Sweet Sixteen.

After an attritional first half that saw the teams knotted up at 30-30, the Cyclones were unable to find the stops on defense to continue their season, with the Bluejays hitting 55.2 percent (16-of-29) of their shots in the second half. The Cyclones were down as many as 13 in the final quarter before a late charge came up a few points short.

In defeat, Iowa State was led by Emily Ryan’s 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting, eight rebounds and six assists. She was one of four Cyclones in double figures, with Nyamer Diew posting a career-high 15 points and grabbing five rebounds. Ashley Joens had 14 points, while Lexi Donarski had 11.

Iowa State closes their season 28-7.
