Ames — Mount Pleasant senior Jadan Brumbaugh picked up right where she left yesterday, capturing gold at yesterday’s indoor state meet in Ames.
Brumbaugh hurled a winning toss of 44 feet, 8 inches to earn the first place finish.
The defending Class 3A state champion, Brumbaugh committed to Iowa State last year where she’ll compete alongside former Mount Pleasant native — now Lisbon Lion — Kole Becker, who also committed to compete collegiately at Iowa State.
Sioux City — The Iowa Wesleyan women’s basketball team, winners of the CAC regular season and tournament titles, will open their NAIA postseason today as the the 15th seeded Tigers play second-seeded Morningside in Round of 64 action.
Today’s game will tip at 6:00 p.m. at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City.
Morningside enters the Round of 64 matchup with a record 27-5, going 15-1 on their home floor.
They finished the season ranked No. 6 in NAIA.
Iowa Wesleyan, 19-5 on the year, has won three straight.
The winner of tonight’s matchup will square off tomorrow with the winner of the 7-10 scrap, which features Texas Wesleyan and St. Francis (Ill.), also being played in Sioux City.
Jamestown (ND.) — The Iowa Wesleyan women’s wrestling team is sending six women to the NAIA Women’s Wrestling National Invitational. The competition will start today in the Jamestown, North Dakota.
Wesleyan is sending Alaina Sunlin, Mia Palumbo, Zoi Smith, Joanna Vanderwood, Destiny Campbell and Adaugo Nwachukwu.
Nwachukwu is currently the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 136.
Palumbo is third at 109, while Alaina Sunlin is sixth at 101.
Boys’ Prep Basketball: SEC All-Conference Lists Announced
The SEC All-Conference lists have been announced and Mount Pleasant is well represented.
The Panthers finished 9-14 overall and 3-7 in league play, closing their season in the 3A District semifinals with a loss to eventual state participant Marion.
Senior forward Dewon Trent was the Panthers’ lone first-team selection.
Trent was also named a Pizza Ranch All-Star following his star-studded season, where he averaged a team-best 13.8 points and seven rebounds per game — adding two assists and two steals per contest as well.
Sophomore Payton Hagans, was decorated as a second-team choice. The rising sophomore elevated his game tremendously as the season wore on, scoring 12 a night.
It was Hagans’ monster 26 point effort that lifted the Panthers to a 3A, District 5 quarterfinal win over Mount Vernon in double overtime.
Owen Vansickel and Aaiden Ashton were both Honorable Mention selections for the Panthers.
Tim Cam, Gabe Feldmann, Dylon Hagans and Reece Kempker earned Academic All-Conference honors for Mount Pleasant.
Fort Madison senior Dayton Davis was named the league’s Most Outstanding Player.
Boys’ Prep Basketball: State Finals Set in All Classes
The State Finals are set in all classes as the fourth day of the Iowa High School State Boys’ Basketball tournament concluded late last night.

Cynthia Anne “Cyndi” Champlin, 67, of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
A Memorial Celebration of Life for Cyndi will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 14 at the Welllspring Evangelical Free Church, 2501 South Grand Ave., Mt. Pleasant. The Reverend Tye Male, Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in North Dakota. Friends may call from 12 Noon – 7 PM on Sunday, March 13 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 2-4 PM Sunday afternoon. On-Line condolences may be directed to www.kimzeyfuneralhome.com.
Cyndi, the former Cynthia Anne Dombeck, was born August 26, 1954 in Bismarck, North Dakota. She was the daughter of Raymond and Lorna (Tavis) Dombeck. Cyndi graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Bismarck. She was conferred with a Bachelor of Art degree in Art and Biology from the University of North Dakota in Fargo. On June 17 & 18, 1977 in Bismarck, Cyndi was united in marriage to Douglas Wynn Champlin (you’ll have to ask Doug about the reason for 2 dates).
Cyndi and Doug made their home in Austin, MN and near Omaha, NE before moving to Mt. Pleasant some 30 years ago. Cyndi was a stay-at-home mom, but later employed her education by becoming a substitute teacher for the Mt. Pleasant Community School District. She remained a substitute teacher for 15 years. Primarily, Cyndi was a gifted artist. She ran her own art studio, Nowadays. She displayed her artworks at numerous farmers markets and other art shows around Southeast Iowa and other parts of the Midwest. Painting was her medium. She created beautiful art work on both canvas and glass. Cyndi was a devoted member of the Wellspring Evangelical Free Church.
Those thankful for sharing in Cyndi’s life include her husband, Doug, of Mt. Pleasant; a son and his wife – Raymond and Katie Champlin of Urbandale; 2 grandchildren – Caleb and Isabel Champlin; a sister – Mary Kaiser of New Jersey and a host of friends and colleagues.
Her parents precede in death.
Des Moines — After racing out to an 11-8 lead after one quarter Burlington saw top-seeded Ames outscore them by 23 over three quarters, defeating the Greyhounds 60-40 yesterday in a Class 4A Quarterfinal.
Ames advances to today’s semifinal round, where the Little Cyclones will meet fourth-seed Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
Iowa State recruit Tamin Lipsey fueled the comeback effort for Ames, scoring a game-high 16 points, including 10 straight in a 12-point run for the Little Cyclones in the second quarter.
Corey Phillips added 11 for Ames, while Trevion LaBeaux chipped in with 10.
With the game still in reach at half, Ames took full control with a 24-10 third quarter run to essentially end the game.
A team that shot just 28% from three in the regular season all of a sudden couldn’t miss from three.
“Our goal was to try to protect the paint. Statistically from 3, they weren’t shooting lights-out or anything. We had some sagging man-to-man stuff going on. It was disruptive enough it was 11-8 in the first quarter.” said head coach Caleb Akey of his team’s defensive game plan.
Jackson Carlson led Burlington with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while Amarion Davis chipped in with 11.
Burlington closes their season 17-8, winners of 15 of their last 18 games including two program shifting tournament trail wins over Iowa City West and Pleasant Valley.
Ames is now 21-3.
Des Moines — The third day of the Iowa High School boys’ state basketball tournament proved to be a good one, with 4A playing their quarterfinals and 1A getting their semis done.
