Henry County Jail

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

4-H County Council sponsoring IJBBA Open Cattle Show

Washington County 4-H County Council will be sponsoring an Iowa Junior Beef Breeds Association (IJBBA) sanctioned open cattle show on Saturday, April 23 at the Washington County Fairgrounds.  This event is open to youth of all ages up to 21.  To exhibit at this show, there are no requirements be a member of the IJBBA or a member of 4-H.  However, members of the IJBBA will receive points.  To see all IJBBA show rules visit http://ijbba.com/rules-ijbba/.  This is a great opportunity for youth to compete against youth from other counties, work more with their cattle, gain experience showing and have fun.

Check-in and day of registration is set for 8:00-9:30 a.m. $35.00 registration entry fee.  Make checks payable to Washington County Extension Office.  The show will begin at 11:00 a.m.   Supreme Champion will receive $250.00 and Reserve Champion will receive $150.00 for both market and breeding animals.  All 1st-3rd place in the class will have cash awards.

Health papers are required on all animals.  If intending to show in a breed division registration papers are required.  Generators are recommended, but not required.  In conjunction with this event will be a Pancake Breakfast from 7:00-10:30 a.m. in the lower level of Dallmeyer Hall on the fairgrounds.

Nomination Petition Challenges

The State Objection Panel, comprised of Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate, Attorney General Tom Miller, and State Auditor Rob Sand, will convene Tuesday, March 29 to review challenges to several candidates’ nomination petitions. The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Room G15 (the legislative dining room) on the first floor of the Iowa State Capitol.

Prep Track: Mount Pleasant Boys’ 7th at Washington Friday

Washington — The Mount Pleasant boys’ track team finished in 7th place at Friday’s Steve Roth Relays at Washington High School.

Iowa City High won the Class A team title while Mediapolis took the Class B trophy.

Columbus earned the crown in Class C.

Will Davidson was the Panthers’ lone winner. Davidson jumped 20 feet, 6.5 inches in the long jump to snag a victory for the Panthers, who finished with 30 team points.

Mediapolis’ claimed victory in the sprint medley, Soloman Zaugg won the two-mile, while the 4×400 quartet of Kadin Salek, Levi Arnold, Logan Rosas and Anthony Isley cruised to a win.

Danville earned wins in the C division sprint medley, 4×400 and individually form Ty Carr and AJ Bonnesen in the 800m and two-mile respectively.

Winfield-Mount Union finished in third in Class C.

The Wolves received wins from Cam Buffington in the long jump, Nick row in the discus and three relay teams.

WACO’s Braden Spain won the high jump and the 400m dash while Jonah Clark, who was the state runner-up at the state wrestling tournament, picked up a win in the shot put.

Several area teams will be back in action tonight at West Burlington High School.

Events will get underway at 4:30 p.m. and area schools competing include Central Lee, Danville, Mediapolis, Mount Pleasant, New London and Winfield-Mount Union.

College Baseball: Iowa Wesleyan Splits Saturday with College of the Ozarks

KILJ — The Iowa Wesleyan baseball team split a pair of games Saturday with College of the Ozarks.

Wesleyan won game one 10-6, while falling in game two 5-4.

In game one, the Tigers scored four runs in the 1st, then added two in the 2nd and three more in the 4th.

Former Mount Pleasant standout Corbin Broeker scored three runs, had a hit and walked once in the win.

Freshman Javier Rivera earned the win.

The righty from Puerto Rico tossed four innings of one-run ball, striking out seven, working around four walks.

Joe Morrison picked up a three-inning save, allowing a hit and striking out three.

In game two, a late rally by Wesleyan fell short. Wesleyan scratched three runs home in the 6th to bring the deficit to one, but could not get any closer in the 5-4 loss.

Froymer Ortega had two hits in the losing effort.

Luis Ayesa suffered the loss for Wesleyan.

The Tigers, now 10-22, will take on Graceland tomorrow afternoon. The first game is set to start at 2:00 p.m. with game two to follow.

College Softball: Tigers Swept by Cottey

Nevada (Mo.) — The Iowa Wesleyan softball team dropped a double dip with Cottey College on Saturday, losing 9-0 and 9-1.

The Comets led 5-0 after one and 7-0 after three, in the game one win shutout win.

Alexis Davis had a double for the Tigers. Ariana Wolfard was the losing pitcher, allowing seven runs on seven hits.

In game two, Cottey jumped out to a 7-0 lead through two innings.

Wesleyan scratched their lone run across in the 5th on an Adrianna Jarrett RBI single.

Haiden Molter was the losing pitcher for the Tigers. Jordan Morthland also threw 2.1 innings allowing two runs on five hits.

Wesleyan is now 3-15, they’ll play at William Penn Wednesday, with first pitch set for 4:00 p.m.

Men’s College Golf: Wesleyan Opens up Spring Season 

Galesburg (Ill.) — The Iowa Wesleyan men’s golf team opened their spring season at the Jim Wetherbee Invite in Galesburg on Saturday.

Brevin Wilson led the Tigers with a day two 77. Trace White improved 11 strokes from Friday to Saturday, finishing with an 82 on the second leg of the tournament.

Kenny Tucker, Bailey Shellady and Colton Sherwood rounded out Wesleyan’s top-five scorers.

Wesleyan will be back in action this afternoon against Waldorf University, with the Purple Cup on the line.
