College Softball: Wesleyan 0-4 in Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach (SC.) — The Iowa Wesleyan softball team has dropped their first four games of the Myrtle Beach Open.

The Tigers fell 11-3 to Madonna University and 10-0 to Goldey Beacom on Sunday, before two tough losses yesterday to Malone College and Keiser University.

Wesleyan is now 0-6 on the year.

They’ll look to right the ship today with a pair of tilts against Carolina University and Penn State-Beaver.

Women’s College Basketball: Clark Named Lieberman Award Finalist

Iowa City — University of Iowa women’s basketball sophomore Caitlin Clark was named a Nancy Lieberman Finalist, the Basketball Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced Monday.

The Nancy Lieberman Award, in its 23rd year, recognizes the top point guard in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball.

Clark has registered five triple-doubles this season, guiding the Hawkeyes to a Big Ten tournament championship.

The sizzling sophomore is averaging 27.4 points, eight rebounds and eight assists per game.

Boys’ Prep Basketball: Danville Foiled in Quarters 

Danville finished 0-of-17 from three point land and just 8-of-38 field goals, as the Bears were upended by Lake Mills 39-22 in a 1A State Quarterfinal yesterday at Wells Fargo Arena.

The 22 points scored by Danville were tied for the lowest mark in State Tournament history.

The Bears were outscored 28-11 in the second half after knotting the game at 11 at halftime with a 9-4 second quarter run.

Lake Mills advances to the semifinals where they’ll play top-seeded and top-ranked Grand View Christian on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

Danville ends their season at 23-3, appearing back at Wells Fargo Arena for the first time since 2016.

The Bears started the game 0-of-9 from the field and got their first basket at the :30 second mark of the first quarter by Sawyer Nelson.

Caiden Gourley paced the Bears with 10 points and five rebounds, hitting just 3-of-16 shots.

Drake Johnson added six, while Cadence Williams had three.

Bennett Berger paced Lake Mills, who improved to 25-1, with a game-high 13 points.

Seth Hermanson had 10 points and five rebounds for the Bulldogs, while Wyatt Helming added six points and 11 boards.

Lake Mills shot 60% from the field in the second half, making a total of ten free throws to ice the game.

Girls’ Prep Basketball: Lopreato, Buffington Honored by IPSWA

Two area basketball standouts have been honored on the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association All-State teams.

Mount Pleasant junior Andrea Lopreato and Winfield-Mount Union’s Bradie Buffington were both third-team selections.

Lopreato helped guide the Panthers to a terrific playoff win over Fort Madison, while leading the team in nearly every major statistical category.

The senior-to be finished with 21.3 points and 10 rebounds per game, adding four assists, four steals and over a block per game.

She connected on over 53% of her field goals and was much improved three-point shooter in her junior campaign.

Next year she has an all but certain chance of joining Mount Pleasant’s 1,000 point scorers club, needing just 45 to hit that mark.

Buffington commandeered another terrific season for Mitch Wachs and the Lady Wolves, averaging a team-high 15 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.

Buffington and the Wolves finished their 19-5 falling in the 1A, Region 6 semis to Notre Dame.

Social Media Scam

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of a scam through varies social media platforms where someone in your friends list, usually someone you would trust, who will then message you about investing money with them for a short-term gain.

These are not your friends but rather someone else who has been hacked and scammed by the same person. These people will show you identification and even video of the person you know saying it is a legitimate investment, however, we can assure you this is a scam.

The Sheriff’s office would like to remind everyone to be very cautious with social media platforms, if it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is.

It is a good practice to NEVER give out passwords, personal identification information, or click links. Even from a trusted source without proper verification.

Fritzjunker Sentencing (corrected story)

A Burlington man, Daniel Joseph Fritzjunker, age 35, was
sentenced on March 2, 2022, to 144 months in prison for Conspiracy to Distribute
Methamphetamine. Fritzjunker was ordered to serve five years of supervised release to follow his
prison term and immediately pay a $100 Special Assessment to the Crime Victims’ Fund.
According to court documents, the investigation into Fritzjunker began when the Mount
Pleasant Police Department received information of his involvement in the distribution of
methamphetamine in the Henry County area. During the investigation, Fritzjunker was repeatedly
identified as a major source for methamphetamine, of which he admitted in later interviews with
law enforcement. On September 17, 2021, Fritzjunker pleaded guilty to the charge.
U.S. Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa made the
announcement. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Southeast Iowa Narcotics Task Force,
Burlington Police Department and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case. This
case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa

Daily Jail Count

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

WMU Cafe Concert

The Winfield Fine Arts Departments are gearing up for their annual Cafe Concert. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, March 19th at 7:00 PM in the big gym. The theme for this year’s concert is “Decades”, and will feature music from different decades of the 20th century. There should be some familiar tunes for everyone! There will be performances by 6th thru 12th grade Choir members, 7th thru 12th grade band members, jazz band, speech team members, and works on display by WMU art students. Additionally, there will be a bake sale and art sale in the lobby. Richard (Dick) Wick (final arrangements)

Richard (Dick) Wick, 89, of New London, died Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center, West Burlington.  He was born May 5, 1932, in Mt. Pleasant to Dale McClure and Marie Ida Vandersnick Wick.  He was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School and was of the Catholic faith.  On January 10, 1953 he married Marilyn Joyce Nelson in Mt. Pleasant; recently celebrating 69 years of marriage.

He worked at IAAP, sold Moorman feed, and was a die-hard Sunbeam Bread salesman; but the love of his working life was helping Larry Reid farm and later, Joe Lounsbury.  He served in the National Guard and the Army, attaining the rank of Sergeant.  Dick and Marilyn very much enjoyed their extensive travels over the years.  He was a quiet, stubborn, loveable man who recently tolerated two and a half years of pain and isolation.  He will be profoundly missed but finished with his suffering.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Michelle (David) McIntyre of Danville and Cheryl (Danny) Parks of New London; eleven grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; sister Nancy McDowell; daughter-in-law Pam Wick; sister-in-law Diana Wick Hardy; and brother-in-law Larry Meagher.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sons Tony and Michael; daughter Melanie Boyd; sister Eileen Meagher; and brother Robert Wick.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated and a private inurnment at Burge Cemetery will be held at a later date.  A Celebration of Life will begin at 3:00 PM Friday, March 11, 2022 at New London VFW Post #7641.  Memorials in his honor have been established for New London Fire and Rescue or the donor’s choice.  Online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.
