Prep Wrestling: 16 KILJ Wrestlers Alive, 14 on Winners Side Into Day Two

Des Moines — 16 KILJ-area wrestlers remain alive at the conclusion of the first day of the Iowa High School State Wrestling Championships.

14 of those 16 are in the winners’ bracket, wrestling tomorrow for their chance to advance to the semifinals.

With state championships in mind, the usual suspects fired hot on Day One.

In 2A, that meant outstanding opening round bouts for top-ranked 182-pounder C.J. Walrath — who stapled his first round opponent Wayne Johnston in :47 seconds — and undefeated Blaine Frazier, who inched closer to 200 career wins, rolling past Easton O’Brien (Atlantic-CAM) in 1:40.

Sam West and River Belger also clocked in and punched their timecard to the quarterfinals.

West cruised by Decorah’s Austin Wilkins by fall in 4:53, while Belger made quick work of Tate Schmitt (Hampton-Dumont) earning a pin in 1:28.

Isaiah Fenton, Carter West and Kaiden Dietzenbach all advanced to the quarterfinals with relatively easy first round wins, as well.

On the backside of the bracket following first round losses, 120-pound freshman C.J. Davis (NDWB) wrestled a gutsy 2-0 decision win over Crestwood’s Kole Johnson which kept his podium hopes alive.

Likewise, 138-pounder Tate O’Shea (NDWB) — who seemed to be nursing a knee injury — snagged a mettlesome come from behind wrestleback triumph in thrilling 4-3 decision fashion.

Outside of the Nikes, Columbus Community-Winfield-Mount Union’s Lane Scorpil continued to impress with a major decision, 8-0 success over Carter Lamont (Vinton-Shellsburg).

Scorpil will quarrel with Caelan Oakes-Sudhish (Southeast Valley) in the quarters tomorrow.

Not to be outdone, 1A did not disappoint.

The fireworks started when three-time defending state champion Marcel Lopez made mincemeat of overmatched Van Meter freshman Garrett Cole.

Lopez ripped his way to fall win in 1:06.

His younger brother Dominic, the three-seed in the 152-pound bracket, circled like a Tiger on raw meat establishing his presence this weekend with systematic tech fall win over Foxe Youngblut (Don Bosco).

Lopez will get Nashua-Plainfield’s McKade Nunn tomorrow in the quarters.

Josh Glendening also got out on the right foot junior upholding his end of the bargain with a workman-like fall win in 1:10.

Mediapolis’ lone qualifier Quinten Aney will hope to get revenge tomorrow.

Now 41-1 after a decision win over Sean Thompson (Logan-Magnolia), Aney will wrestle the only man to beat him tomorrow in Lisbon’s establishment name Cade Siebrecht.

WACO’s two qualifiers both advanced.

Freshman — not by appearance — Louden Huisenga showed he was ready for the spotlight.

The 12th ranked 145-pounder snagged an earth-shattering come from behind win over 11th ranked Myles McMahon of Don Bosco.

Human wrecking ball Jonah Clark looked like a kitten with a ball of yarn winning his bout with Maquoketa Valley’s Brady Davis by fall after leading 11-2.

The lone elimination on the entire day was New London’s Gage Burden, though you could hardly call his season a disappointment. Burden finished his season 37-19 with a state appearance now inked on his resume. His future is undoubtedly vivid.

Tomorrow’s morning session will begin at 9:00 a.m.

Tony & Elsa Weinreich

Mr. Tony Weinreich, 81, of New London, died Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids.

Mrs. Elsa Weinreich, 83, of New London, died Thursday, February 17, 2022 at Henry County Health Center, Mt. Pleasant.  Arrangements for Mr. and Mrs. Weinreich are pending at Elliott Chapel, New London.

Work release escape of Marquis Bedford

Ottumwa – Marquis Bedford, convicted of Willful Injury- Causing Serious Injury and Prohibited  Acts-Mfg, Del, Consp, or Poss w/Int-Meth LT 5 gm in Wapello and Jefferson County, failed to report back to the Ottumwa Residential Facility as required yesterday.

Bedford is a 24-year-old Black male, height 5′ 11″, and weighs 198 pounds. He was admitted to the work release facility on 10/15/2021.

Persons with information on Bedford’s whereabouts should contact local police.

Deputy Charged with Domestic Abuse

On 02-15-22 at approximately 10:46 PM the Washington County Communications Center was notified of two people arguing at their residence. Washington County Deputies responded and separated the parties involved.  Because one person involved was Washington County Deputy Robyn Hoppman, the Iowa State Patrol was called to investigate the incident.  Personnel from the Iowa State Patrol arrived and after completion of their initial investigation arrested Robyn Hoppman for Domestic Abuse Assault with Intent to Inflict Serious injury, 1st offense.  Hoppman was transported to the Washington County Jail and held pending her initial court hearing.  After her initial court hearing Hoppman posted $2,000 bond and was released.

The criminal case is still under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office has no further information reference the Iowa State Patrol’s pending criminal case.

Deputy Robyn Hoppman has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the completion of an internal investigation.

 

***A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the person charged is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.

Brian Walter

Brian Leonard Walter passed away suddenly on February 11, 2022 in Winfield at age 57.  A Celebration of Life will be held at on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the Winfield First Presbyterian Church. The Service will start at 11:00am with an open lunch and time for visitation to follow.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the family in memory of Brian.  The Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral and Cremation Services of Winfield is caring for Brian’s arrangements.  Online condolences may be left at   www.sandhfuneralservice.com.

Brian was born on January 25, 1965 to Norman and Janice Walter in Fordyce, Nebraska.  He graduated from Winfield- Mt. Union High School in 1983 and attended Indian Hills Community College studying construction.  He married Angie Kelley in 1987 in Mt. Pleasant and they had three children.  They later divorced.  Brian worked in construction his entire life, many years at Merit Construction with his father and more recently for TWG with his son, Drew.   He was an exceptionally skilled craftsman and enjoyed building and creating.  He had a love for music and was a talented singer and dancer which he passed onto his children.  He enjoyed playing the harmonica and was studying guitar.  Brian loved the outdoors, spending time fishing, camping and riding his motorcycle.  He also loved tinkering, playing Yahtzee, his dogs and most of all, being with his family.

Brian will be deeply missed his three children, Caleb (Kala) Walter of Grimes, Danielle (Logan) Anderson of Solon and Drew (Fran Lathrop) Walter of Cedar Rapids; his six grandchildren, Graham Anderson, Drake Walter, Hadley Anderson, Sophie Walter, Marianna Walter, and Josie Anderson; his mother, Janice Walter of Winfield; siblings, Dean (Sharla) Walter, Kim (Tom) Lampe, and Michelle (Brian) Walter-Blodgett, his partner Gina Hanshaw and family.

Brian was preceded in death by his father, Norman Walter and niece Halen Lampe.

Judith M. “Judy” Penn

Judith M. “Judy” Penn, 77, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at the Washington County Hospital in Washington, Iowa.

Judy was born on August 24, 1944, in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Dale C. and Ruth M. (Brownell) Penn.  Judy was an outgoing person who never ran into a stranger and was always on the go.  She enjoyed her walks, the trips to Branson with her folks, collecting dolls and stuffed animals, along with watching old westerns, especially those of John Wayne.  Judy had a loving and caring soul.

Judy is survived by her cousins, Janice (Jack) Murphy of Lockridge, Betty Farley of Mt. Pleasant, Harold Swailes of Olds and Jim (Madeline) Swailes of Mt. Pleasant, and her caregiver Jeff Murphy of Mt. Pleasant.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 21, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Gordon Hawkins officiating.  Burial will follow in the Forest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the Murphy Funeral Home.  Memorials may be directed to Hope Haven in her memory.

Huge Success, Huge Appreciation!

The Mount Pleasant School District Music Program saw the power of community Wednesday night during a fundraising event on KILJ Radio. $52,157 was raised in just three hours thanks to support from individuals, families, organizations and businesses.  The goal was $30,000 for new uniforms and formal wear. The Music Boosters now have the funds to purchase a much needed trailer for the program.  And when you consider that a tuba costs about $8,000, there are now additional funds to continue the support of music k thru 12.
