Prep Basketball: Rare SEC Doubleheader Tonight

Fairfield — Because of impending forecasts, Southeast Conference fans will get a treat tonight when Mount Pleasant travels to Fairfield for a conference girls-boys’ doubleheader.

The girls’ will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Mount Pleasant has won four of their last five and enter tonight’s scrap at 5-7.

Fairfield is 6-4 and led by senior Danielle Breen, who is scoring 16.6 points per game.

Delaney Breen pours in 13.7 points for the Trojans as well.

Fairfield has won two straight, dispatching Prairie City-Monroe and Washington.

Mount Pleasant is coming off a 43-28 win over Holy Trinity on Monday.

Andrea Lopreato scored 19 points and hauled in 16 boards in the win — upping her season averages to 20 points and nine boards per game.

Few if any teams in the area have the requisite size and speed to defend her adequately.

The Panthers have won two of three against the Trojans, but this is their first matchup of the year.

In the nightcap, Mount Pleasant will look to stack success after a road win Monday at Albia.

The win snapped a five-game losing skid.

Fairfield enters tonight 3-7, through the Trojans have lost five of those seven by six points or less — including a Friday night 63-57 loss to No. 5 Washington.

The Demons then upset No. 3 Ballard in Cedar Rapids the following day — long story short Fairfield is much better than their record indicates.

A big reason for that has been the continued development of all conference forward Max Weaton.

Weaton, averaging 20 points and 11 rebounds, is starting to garner Division I interest for his play on the gridiron and hardwood.

He’ll likely go vis-à-vis with Dewon Trent of Mount Pleasant.

You can listen to both ends of the doubleheader on FM 98.5/AM 1130.

The girls’ will start at 6:00 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m.

Nathan Bloechl and Kent Bennett will have all the action.
