Prep Boys’ Basketball: New London Survives in OT, Other Area Finals:

New London 50, West Burlington 47 (OT) 

New London stayed unbeaten, but needed overtime to do it as they withstood West Burlington 50-47.

It was the debut for Blaise Porter after missing the team’s first three games.

Porter had 17 points, while Kade Benjamin chipped n with 14 points and nine boards.

West Burlington took a 39-30 lead into the fourth quarter behind a huge 20-8 third quarter run.

Parker Lau had 12 points to pace the Falcons while Brady Martin chipped in with 10.

New London, 4-0, will take on Danville Friday.

West Burlington will take on WACO.

Winfield-Mount Union 37, Mediapolis 23

Carter Loyd scored a game-high 13 points as Winfield-Mount Union outslugged Mediapolis 37-23 last night in Mediapolis.

Cam Buffington had 10 points, while Abram Edwards chipped in with six.

Winfield-Mount Union led 14-12 at halftime, before running out to a 23-11 run in the second half.

Elijah Grier and Jackson Hutcheson each scored six points to lead Mediapolis. Ryan Ensminger added five.

Winfield remained undefeated at 5-0.

Mediapolis fell to 5-1.

WACO 64, Van Buren County 29 

Mason Miller had 15 points while Hunter Hughes chipped in with 10 as WACO rolled to an easy win over Van Buren County, 64-29.

11 different players got into the scorer’s column for the Warriors.

Jackson Manning led Van Buren with 13 points.

WACO stayed hot, they’re now 5-1.

Van Buren County slipped to 1-5.

Danville 72, Holy Trinity 35 

Danville raced out to an early lead and never looked back as the Bears put it in cruise control in a 72-35 win over Holy Trinity last night.

Drake Johnson and Caiden Gourley paced Danville with 17 points apiece.

Sawyer Nelson scored 13 points, while Ty Carr finished with nine.

Danville, receiving votes in the latest AP Top 10 poll, is now 6-0 on the year.

Holy Trinity slumped to 1-5.

Prep Girls’ Basketball: New London Slips, WACO Wins in Busy SEISC Night:

West Burlington 69, New London 20 

Natalie Burden’s seven points and four steals weren’t enough as West Burlington raced past New London yesterday 69-20.

Abbey Bence poured in a game-high 25 points while Kenna Marlow had 18.

West Burlington moved to 5-1 and will take on WACO Friday night.

New London is 0-9.

Mediapolis 69, Winfield-Mount Union 44

Mediapolis head coach Todd Borrison won his 500th game as the Mediapolis ladies steamrolled to an easy 69-44 win over Winfield-Mount Union last night.

Hallie Mohr had a career high 33 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the field.

Hanna Wagenbach added 18 for the Bullettes.

Keetyn Townsley and Bradie Buffingotn led the Lady Wolves with 14 points apiece.

Winfield dropped to 6-2, while Mediapolis improved to 7-0.

WACO 45, Van Buren County 37

Ellah Kissell scored 28 of WACO’s 45 points guiding the Warriors to a 45-37 over Van Buren County yesterday.

Kissell drilled three triples in the win.

Grace Coble added eight for WACO, who improved to 5-2.

Shea Scott and Zoe Best had nine apiece for Van Buren, who fell to 1-6.

College Football: Four UNI Panthers on All-American Team: 

Four UNI football players have earned spots on FCS All-American Teams.

UNI seniors Trevor Penning and Jared Brinkman were named to the First Team Offense Defense Teams for all classes.

Matthew Cook was named to the Second Team Special Teams for all classes and also earned a spot on the all-American team reserved for sophomores.

Omar Brown also earned a spot on the sophomore defense team.

Penning was the only offensive lineman to be named as a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, which is presented to the national offensive player of the year in college football’s Division I subdivision.

He was the first player to be invited to the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

UNI finished their season 6-6, falling in the first round of the FCS Playoffs to Eastern Washington.

College Football: Iowa State’s Young to Transfer:

In shocking news out of Ames, Iowa State star safety Isheem Young has announced his plans to transfer from the program.

Young, the 2020 Defensive Freshman of the Year in the Big 12, had started 19 straight games for Matt Campbell’s defense.

He joins a list of four other Cyclones to announce their intentions to transfer just this week, brining the total to 11 in the last two weeks.

Penn State is expected to make a push for Young, who hails from suburban Philadelphia.

Single Vehicle Crash Report

On December 13, at approximately 2:53 PM, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a motor vehicle accident that took place at the intersection of 170th Street and Des Moines Avenue.  After an investigation, it was found that Jennifer Hinson of Mediapolis, Iowa, was driving a vehicle that entered the ditch before rolling over in a field.  The vehicle was estimated to be totaled and Hinson was transported for injuries sustained from the accident.

Lloyd McIntyre, Jr.

Lloyd McIntyre, Jr, age 59, of rural Wayland, died Monday, December 13, 2021, at his home.

A celebration of life will be held 3:00PM, Friday, December 17, 2021 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington. The service will be livestreamed on the Beatty Peterseim Facebook Page. Family will receive friends from 4-6:00PM, Thursday, December 16, 2021 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington. Memorial donations may be given to the local AA chapter.

Lloyd McIntyre, Jr, was born January 2, 1962, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Lloyd and Opal (Bird) McIntyre. He graduated from West Waterloo High School and attained his Associates of the Arts degree from Hawkeye Community College. He was united in marriage to Janet Moorehouse in Waterloo in 1982.

Lloyd was employed as an assistant to the engineer at Henry/Keokuk County for 20 years. He enjoyed family, grandchildren, hunting, fishing, art pencil drawing, driving, and collecting cars.

Survivors include his wife Janet of Wayland, two sons: Adam (Emily) McIntyre of Keosauqua, Iowa, Douglas (Taylor) McIntyre of Wayland, Iowa; four grandchildren: Lucy, Dallas, Reston, and Jordyn, and three sisters: Sharon (David) Turner of Fairbank, Iowa, Janet (Steve) Brustkern of LaPorte City, Iowa, and Rosealla (Joe) Engelkes of Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Preceding Lloyd in death were his parents.

 

Public Health’s December holiday schedule

Henry County Public Health will be closed on Friday, December 24th and Friday, December 31st for holidays. On Thursday, December 23rd the office will close at Noon so there will be no immunization clinic that day. Instead, they will offer COVID-19 vaccines on a walk-in basis from 9am-12pm on the 23rd. COVID-19 vaccines will also be offered on a walk-in basis from 9am-3:30pm on Thursday, December 30th. Public Health urges all residents age 5 and older to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and all residents age 16 and older to get their booster.

Hy-Vee Mobilizes Its Disaster Recovery Fleet to Send Aid to Tornado Victims in Kentucky and Tennessee

Caravan of 19 vehicles left Iowa on Monday morning with water and food to donate to those in need

 WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (Dec. 13, 2021) — Today, Hy-Vee deployed a team of 37 employees in a caravan of 19 vehicles carrying 327,000 bottles of water and more than 220,000 snack bars and breakfast items to help victims of the devastating tornadoes that ripped through Kentucky and Tennessee this weekend.

The disaster recovery team left Hy-Vee’s headquarters in West Des Moines, Iowa, mid-morning on Monday, stopping at Hy-Vee’s Distribution Center located in Chariton, Iowa, before driving the nearly 500 miles to Mayfield, Kentucky. In Mayfield, the team will partner with local emergency operations centers and nonprofits to distribute the snacks and water, as well as assist in recovery efforts.

The caravan consists of 10 Hy-Vee semitrailers, Hy-Vee’s disaster command center, six disaster recovery pickup trucks and two SUVs.

“As soon as we learned of the incredible tornado devastation in parts of Kentucky and Tennessee, we knew we had to send relief,” says Randy Edeker, Hy-Vee’s chairman and CEO. “In times of great need, like these, it’s important that we help in the way we know best – by providing essentials like food and water as well as a helping hand.”

The team will visit other impacted areas in Kentucky and Tennessee and expects to be on the ground providing aid for several days this week.

Local Toy Drive for Tornado Victims

Bonaparte area businesses are coming together to sponsor a toy drive to provide Christmas gifts for children affected by the tornado devastation in Kentucky.  Help fill the semi that will be parked at 601 1st Street in Bonaparte on Sunday, December 19 from 1-5 pm.  There are also drop-off locations in several Southeast Iowa communities for drop-off the rest of this week. Donations of wrapped toys are being accepted. Please tag with whether the gift is for a boy or a girl and the age range.

Prep Boys’ Basketball: Mount Pleasant’s Late Rally Falls Short; Other Area Matchups

Cedar Rapids — Owen Vansickel scored all 16 points in the second half but the furious Mount Pleasant rally came up short as the Panthers fell to Cedar Rapids Washington 72-59 last night in a nonconference matchup.

Mount Pleasant, trailing by as much as 26 in the third quarter, trimmed the deficit to just nine in the fourth quarter before running out of steam.

Dewon Trent finished with 14 points and 11 boards, while Payton Hagans and Aiden Ashton each chipped in with 11.

The Warriors led 37-14 at the break behind 17 points from star guard Trajain Sain.

Mount Pleasant fell to 2-3 with the loss.

They’ll get back on the hardwood Friday night on the road at No. 5 Washington.

The Demons are 4-0 on the year.
