High School Track

Fairfield hosted the Brookhart-Crew Relays last night and the Mt. Pleasant girls’ team extended their meet win streak to six after collecting 179 points as the Fort Madison boys’ team grabbed 151 points for the win. 

Starting with the Panther girls’ team, Alex Scott sprinted to the win in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.62 seconds, while Kynlee White continued that short distance speed with a gold medal time of 26.93 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Linzy Striegel grabbed the victory in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1 minute and 11 seconds. The Panthers narrowly got the win in the 4×100 meter relay, while the team of Abi Shelangoski, Ellie Freeman, Scott, and White defeated Washington in the 4×200 meter relay. Additionally, the sprint medley team grabbed the win with a time of 1 minute and 55 seconds. In the field events, Izzy Sloat leapt 16 feet and 6 inches to win the long jump.

The Fairfield girls’ team finished in 4th place with 74 points as they were anchored by Lilly Bergren’s win in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.28 seconds. Bergren helped the Trojans take the shuttle hurdle relay by a five-second margin. 

West Burlington/Notre Dame’s lone win occurred in the distance medley relay with the team of Ady Lamm, Jilian Nickel, Kaitlyn Kipp, and Kaylee Webb, sporting a time of 4 minutes and 28 seconds. 

On the boys’ side, Fairfield collected 137 points for 2nd place. Dayson Workman took the gold in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.8 seconds. In the 800-meter run, Gabe Tejada’s time of 1 minute and 56 seconds dominated the field for the win. Dylan Adam won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.97 seconds. The Trojans ran away with the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 1 minute and 2 seconds. In the field events, Eli Zilman flew 6 feet and 6 inches for the gold in the high jump.

Mt. Pleasant’s 102 points was good enough for 4th place, while West Burlington/Notre Dame grabbed 73 points. The Panthers finished in 2nd place in six events. For the Falcons, Landry Haberichter outran Julian Dear of Fort Madison for the win in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.2 seconds. This led to a win in the 4×100 meter relay. 

Columbus had their Wildcat Relays last night and the boys’ team soared to another 1st place finish for the season with 188 points. Lamar Ceant took victories in the 200-meter dash and the 110-meter hurdles, while Ty Muniz outpaced the field in both long distance events. The Wildcats also won the 4×100, 4×800, and shuttle hurdle relays.

Wapello’s Rowen Atkinson grabbed the win in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.5 seconds. Kolton Small swept the throwing events with a 1st place toss of 146 feet and 2 inches for the discus and a winning heave of 47 feet and 3 inches in the shot put. 

On the girls’ side, Kenna Small of Wapello took 1st place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes and 46 seconds. Columbus had Isabella Forbes win the shot put with a throw of 33 feet and 8 inches. 

WACO and Danville made the trip to Highland last night to compete in their invitational and the Danville boys’ team had the highest finish of our local teams with a 4th place mark of 68 points. 

For the Bears, the distance medley squad took home an easy with a time of 3 minutes and 37 seconds–12 seconds faster than 2nd place. WACO’s Isaac Rich was the best individual finisher with a time of 11.74 seconds in the 100-meter dash, which was good enough for the silver. 

On the girls’ side, Danville grabbed 1st place in the sprint medley relay with a time of 1 minute and 57 seconds, while WACO took the distance medley relay with a mark of 4 minutes and 50 seconds–winning the heat by one-hundredth of a second.

The Southeast Conference Meet is scheduled for Thursday, May 8th, at Fairfield. 

The Southeast Iowa Super Conference meet is set for Thursday with WACO acting as the host. 

High School Tennis

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team battled Burlington last night with the two squads splitting their single matches with Max Heater, Dane Cook, and Lou Schimmelpfennig picking up the wins. Unfortunately, it was the Grayhounds who executed the narrow 5-4 win as the team of Heater and Cook collected the lone win in doubles. 

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team fell to Burlington last night 9-0. 

Fairfield swept Keokuk last night with the boys’ team shutting out the Chiefs 9-0 and the girls’ team winning 7-2. 

Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant will compete in the SEC Tournament on Thursday, May 8th, with the boys’ teams traveling to Fairfield, while the girls’ teams will make the trip to Burlington.

High School Golf

The Mt. Pleasant, Central Lee, and New London girls’ teams ventured to Keokuk for an invitational yesterday and the hosts exited with the win with a team score of 365 followed by New London with a 397 and Mt. Pleasant finished with the bronze with a score of 403. 

The Panthers were led by Sophia Walderbach’s 18-hole score of 93 as Izzy Zihlman carded a 99. Central Lee’s Marie Young shot a 100 as the Hawks collected a score of 462. 

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will compete in their SEC tournament on May 14th. 

The New London, Burlington Notre Dame, Danville, and Fairfield girls’ teams will participate in the Grayhound Invite today at the Flint Hills Golf Course.

The Mt. Pleasant, Danville, Mediapolis, New London, and Fairfield boys’ teams competed in the Washington Invitational yesterday and the Bulldogs finished the highest out of the group with a team score of 352, which was good enough for 12th place. The rest of our local teams were bunched up as Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant took 13th and 14th place, respectively, and New London and Danville grabbed 16th and 17th place, respectively. Archer Kreuter led the Trojans with a round of 85. 

The Van Buren County girls’ team will host a triangular today.

The Southeast Iowa Super Conference and Southeast Conference boys’ tournaments are scheduled for tomorrow, May 7th. 

High School Soccer

Mediapolis split their matchup against Burlington Notre Dame last night with the girls’ team defeating the Nikes 5-1, while the #6 Notre Dame boys’ team jumped back into the win column in a dominant 7-2 final. 

The Mediapolis boys’ team will tangle with Hillcrest Academy on Thursday, May 8th, at home at 5 pm, while the girls’ team will take on Wapello on Friday, May 9th, on the road.

The Burlington Notre Dame boys’ team will square off against Danville tomorrow, May 7th, at home at 4:30 pm.

The Central Lee boys’ team will play on Thursday, May 8th, against Albia on the road at 5:30 pm.

The Wapello girls’ team fell to Benton last night 8-0. Wapello will travel to West Branch tonight with the girls playing first at 5 pm followed by the boys’ game.

The Danville boys’ team’s first half offense paved the way for the 3-2 victory over Columbus last night. Colin Pealer netted two of the goals in the winning effort. 

Columbus will battle Centerville tonight with the girls’ team playing first at 5:30 pm on the road.

The Fairfield boys’ team cruised past Washington last night 5-0 as Binh Truong notched two goals and two assists for the Trojans.

The Fairfield boys’ team will face off against Ottumwa tonight at 4:30 pm at home.

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team defeated Keokuk last night 2-1 as Addison Peck netted the game winner. The Panthers will take on Burlington on Thursday with the boys’ team on the road and the girls’ team at home. 

The WACO boys’ team is back in action tonight against Sigourney Keota at 5 pm on the road.

Southeastern Community College                                                     

The baseball team received the #1-seed and a first-round bye for the ICCAC Region 11 tournament. The Blackhawks will face off against the winner between Ellsworth and Des Moines Area Community College on Friday, May 9th, at 3:30 pm.

1953 – MLB St. Louis Browns Alva “Bobo” Holloman throws a no-hitter against the visiting Philadelphia A’s in his first career start, winning 6-0. He is one of just two pitchers in the modern era to complete this feat.

1954 – English athlete Roger Bannister becomes the first to run a sub-4 minute mile, recording a time of 3:59:4 at Iffley Road Track, Oxford.

1998 – Kerry Wood strikes out 20 Houston Astros to tie the major league record held by Roger Clemens. Wood threw a one-hitter and did not walk a batter in his 5th career start.
