Mount Pleasant City Council to Hold Regular Session April 23

Mount Pleasant City Council to Hold Regular Session April 23

The Mount Pleasant City Council will meet for a regular session on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the second-floor meeting room of City Hall, located at 307 E. Monroe Street.

The agenda begins with routine items, including roll call, approval of the agenda, communications, and the Consent Agenda. The Consent Agenda includes approval of meeting minutes, payment of bills, officer reports, an outdoor sound permit for a PFLAG event on July 12, and the renewal of a Class F Retail Alcohol License for the Veterans Club of Henry County.

In new business, the Council will consider:

  • Purchasing a lawn mower for the Public Works Department

  • A Fire Protection Agreement between the City and the Benefitted Fire District

Several additional items will also be addressed, including:

  • First readings of ordinances related to parking regulations (Chapter 69) and municipal fees (Chapter 25)

  • Approval of the employee health insurance renewal for fiscal year ending 2026

  • A contract for a new Police Department vehicle

  • A resolution to apply for the Iowa Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) for construction of the Washington-Grand Connector Trail

The Council will also set dates for multiple public hearings on proposed sales of real estate located on:

  • 502 North Hamlin Street

  • 500 North Hamlin Street

  • 207 South Marion Street

  • 306 North Lee Street

  • 312 East Vernon Street (proposed for sale to Henry County Habitat for Humanity)

Other resolutions on the agenda include:

  • Releasing a real estate mortgage under the City Housing Assistance Program

  • Approving a closed session checklist

  • Appointing Simon Phanthouvong and Ethan Faeth to the Fire Department Reserves

The meeting will conclude with a public forum and adjournment. The Council will reconvene for an adjourned session on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 9:00 a.m.

Residents are encouraged to attend, especially those with interest in the upcoming fiscal budget, housing initiatives, and city service updates.

Harvey John Condon, 96, of Fairfield passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at his home.

A graveside service honoring his life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at Prairie Center Cemetery in Packwood. Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield is assisting the family.

Kim L. Latta

Kim L. Latta, 69, of Muscatine, Iowa, formerly of Burlington, passed away at 6:05 a.m. Sunday, April 20, 2025, at Acura Healthcare in Muscatine.

He was born on June 20, 1955, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the son of Edward E. and Madeline A. (Seyb) Latta.

Kim was a 1973 graduate of Central Lee High School. He attended Drake University and later graduated from Oklahoma University with a Bachelor of Science in Education Degree. He taught school in New Mexico and later substitute taught in Kansas and Missouri. Kim also taught English as a second language in Mok’po, South Korea. Later he worked in sales at World Airways in Oakland, California. He then worked for twelve years as a casino dealer at Catfish Bend Casino until his retirement.

Kim was preceded in death by his parents and bothers: Gayle, Gary and Lynn.

Per his wishes, his body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

At Kim’s request, no services will be held.Schmitz Funeral Home of Donnellson is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mom & Me Tea Party Set for May 4th in Winfield

Families in and around Winfield are invited to a heartwarming afternoon of bonding and fun at the upcoming Mom & Me Tea Party, happening on Sunday, May 4th, 2025 at 1 p.m. The event will take place at the Winfield Veterans Building, located at 116 N. Locust Street.

Designed to celebrate mothers and their children, the tea party promises a delightful blend of activities, food, drinks, and fun for all ages. The cost is $15 per Mom & Me pair, with an additional $5 fee for each extra child.

More than just a charming afternoon outing, this event also supports a meaningful cause—all proceeds will go towards funding the 2025 Crooked Creek Days events, a beloved community tradition.

Salem Elementary School to Host Annual Spring Carnival on April 25

Salem Elementary School is inviting the entire community to join in the fun at its school carnival on Friday, April 25, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The event will be held at the school, located at 412 E Jackson Street, Salem, Iowa.

Billed as “The Greatest Salem Elementary School Carnival,” the evening promises an array of family-friendly activities and attractions. Attendees can enjoy a snow cone truck, a variety of games, a dunk tank, a bounce house, several food options, and both live and silent auctions.

Admission is free, and everyone is welcome to attend. The event is designed to bring together students, families, and community members for a night of laughter, fun, and fundraising. Henry County Board of Supervisors Sets Agenda for April 22 Alternative Wind Energy Ordinance

The Henry County Board of Supervisors will hold a public meeting Tonight (Tuesday, April 22, 2025), at 6:00 p.m. on the third floor of the Henry County Courthouse, in the courtroom located at 100 E Washington St, Suite 202, Mount Pleasant.

The meeting will begin with the approval of the agenda and minutes from the previous session, followed by the first public hearing scheduled to discuss the Alternative Wind Energy Ordinance.
