Salem City Council Speaks Out Following Closure of Salem Elementary School

The Salem City Council is speaking out following the decision to close Salem Elementary School at the end of the 2027 school year.

In a statement released Tuesday, the council said it acknowledges the permanent closure of the school with a heavy heart following the Mount Pleasant Community School Board’s final decision on April 27.

City leaders described Salem Elementary as more than just a building, calling it a cornerstone of the community for generations and a place where lifelong friendships and shared commitment to children’s futures were formed.

The statement says the decision came after months of public hearings and financial analysis, and recognized the school’s deep history and impact on students, faculty, and neighbors.

The council also addressed Salem students directly, encouraging them to carry the spirit of being a “Salem Student” — defined by curiosity, kindness, and resilience — into their future classrooms.

The statement closed by saying that while the school’s doors may close, the city’s commitment to Salem families “remains open and absolute,” pledging continued efforts to keep the community a vibrant place to raise a family.

Mark Elliott Sedlacek

Mark Elliott Sedlacek, 67, of Keosauqua, IA passed away on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the University of Iowa Health Care Center in Iowa City, IA. Funeral Mass honoring his life will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield, IA with Father Ross Epping officiating. Burial will be in the Fellows Cemetery in Keosauqua immediately following. A visitation will be held at the Cranston Family Funeral Home in Keosauqua, IA on Thursday, May 7, 2026, beginning at 2:00 p.m. with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions in Mark’s honor may be directed to the family to be decided at a later date. Friends may leave online condolences at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com.

Mark Elliott Sedlacek entered this life on May 24, 1958, in Cedar Rapids, IA, the son of Marvin and Maxine Posusta Sedlacek. He attended school in Cedar Rapids, graduating with the Jefferson High School Class of 1976. Mark went on to further his education and nurture his love of the outdoors by attending Kirkwood and receiving his associate’s degree in forestry management. At an early age Mark had a love for nature and enjoyed hunting and trapping whenever he had a chance.

Mark began his career working as a park ranger for Geode State Park near Danville, IA before taking a job at Lacey State Park in Keosauqua. This move found Mark in the place that he would call home for the remainder of his life. On December 12, 1992, he married the love of his life, Maureen Morris. This was the first chapter in a love story that lasted over 33 years. With this union came the addition of stepchildren who were welcomed into the family and never thought of or treated as anything other than his kids.

Mark stepped away from his job as a park ranger to attend the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and worked with the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department. He eventually took a role as the golf course manager at the Riverview County Club in Keosauqua. During this time he raised pumpkins and it became a family affair. Eventually Mark decided to retire and truly “live his dream” of being a full-time produce farmer. Mark began raising all kinds of fruits and vegetables to sell at local farmers’ markets. While he took pride in nurturing his plants, his true joy came from sharing knowledge and creating memories with his grandchildren. In his off-season he spent countless hours working a trap line and was a lifetime member of the National Trappers Association.

His grandkids will forever remember all of the campfires with s’mores and hot dogs, BINGO at Christmas, the snacks he brought for every one of their sporting events, and ice cream trips after a day of hard work. He had a huge heart and a matching sense of humor that he shared with those around him. While he had a quiet presence… his actions spoke volumes. He will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, and the community that he called home.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents.

Left to share his story is his loving wife, Maureen Sedlacek of Keosauqua, IA; four children, Tonja (Kurt) Jirak of Keosauqua, Tanner Morris (Christa Beason) of Johnston, IA, Ty (Kristin) Morris of Lisle, IL, and Tasha Morris of Keosauqua, IA; his grandchildren, Kelby (McKenzie) McClaran, Alexis (Carter) Robertson; Ella, T.J. Sophia, Leo, Amos, Knox and Blaise Jirak; Kyle, Mason, Kendall, Sydney, and Harry Morris and Baelyn Beason; three siblings, Doug (Jennifer) Sedlacek, Neil (Betty) Sedlacek, and Jill Sedlacek, as well as several special nieces and nephews, extended family, and many, many friends

Northeast Animal Hospital Celebrated as Nominee for 2026 Small Business of the Year by Mount Pleasant Chamber

The celebration of Small Business Week continues in Mount Pleasant, as another Small Business of the Year nominee is recognized by the Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance.

Today’s spotlight turned to Northeast Animal Hospital, where community members gathered to honor the clinic’s commitment to both animal care and community involvement.

Led by veterinarian Dr. Travis J. Van De Berg, the practice has built a reputation for compassionate, high-quality care. Supporting daily operations is office manager Chris Van De Berg, who helps oversee a team that reflects a strong connection to the local community.

Their staff includes graduates of Iowa Wesleyan University, along with local high school interns gaining hands-on experience in veterinary medicine. The clinic’s focus on mentorship and education is helping inspire the next generation of animal care professionals.
When asked about his practice and his nomination of 2026 Small Business of the Year by the Chamber Alliance, Dr. Travis had this to say:

Northeast Animal Hospital is one of four finalists being honored throughout the week as part of Small Business Week celebrations. Other finalists include Jane Anne Boutique, The Shop DeWitt Built, and Mount Pleasant Tire & Service. The events will culminate Friday morning at the Chamber’s Small Business Breakfast, where the Small Business of the Year winner will be announced and be featured on KILJ’s Generation Gap program with Paul and Kadie live at 9 am.

The recognition highlights not only business success, but also the role local employers play in developing talent and strengthening the Mount Pleasant community; a role Northeast Animal Hospital certainly plays very well. Congratulations to the Van De Berg’s and the entire team at Northeast Animal Hospital on this recognition.

Here’s more of the full interview with Dr. Van De Berg:

New London Superintendent Among Finalists for Central Lee Superintendent Position

The Central Lee Community School District is moving forward in its search for a new superintendent, announcing three finalists for the position.

The candidates include Dr. Chace Ramey, Stacey Schmidt, and Chad Wahls—who is currently serving as superintendent of the New London Community School District.

The search was conducted in partnership with McPherson and Jacobson, with the school board reviewing applicants before narrowing the field to three.

Dr. Ramey currently serves as deputy superintendent in the Iowa City Community School District, bringing experience in operations, school improvement, and policy development within a large district serving more than 14-thousand students.

Stacey Schmidt is the director of student services for the Atlantic Community School District, where she oversees programs including special education, gifted and talented, and at-risk services, along with fiscal planning and compliance.

Chad Wahls, familiar to many in our listening area, currently leads the New London Community School District, where he oversees district operations, budgeting, facilities, and long-term planning, along with building strong community partnerships.

Formal interviews with the finalists are scheduled for Friday, May 8th, with the Central Lee School Board expected to make a final decision following that process.

The new superintendent will take over leadership of the Central Lee Community School District on July 1st of 2026.
