High School Track and Field

The Southeast Iowa Super Conference Meet is scheduled for tomorrow, May 7th, at WACO High School. 

The Southeast Conference will meet in Keokuk for their conference showdown tomorrow. 

High School Soccer

The Fairfield girls’ team fell to Burlington last night, 3-0, while the boys’ team dropped their game to Ottumwa, 8-0. 

Washington will compete against Fairfield tomorrow, May 7th, with the boys’ team at home and the girls’ team playing on the road with both games slated to start at 5 pm.

Mediapolis shutout Wapello in a sweep last night with both the boys’ and girls’ teams winning 5-0, despite Reese Connolly saving 18 shots in the girls’ game and Angel Fernandez stopping 19 shots in the boys’ game for Wapello.

Mediapolis will stay at home on Friday, May 8th, with the girls’ taking on Fort Madison at 5 pm and the boys’ game against Highland to follow at 7 pm.

The Wapello boys’ team will make the trip to Hillcrest Academy at 5 pm on Friday.

The Danville boys’ team had their senior night spoiled last night by Hillcrest Academy, losing 4-0. The Bears will travel to Central Lee on Friday at 5 pm.

Central Lee split their contest with Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union last night with the boys’ team winning 4-2 and the girls’ team losing 4-0. Jaedin Ogelsby notched a goal and an assist in the boys’ game for the Hawks, while Naveiah Garza netted a hat trick for the Wildcats in the girls’ contest.

Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union will celebrate senior night on Monday, May 11th, with the girls’ team leading off the night at 5 pm.

The Central Lee girls’ team will play Mid-Prairie tomorrow at 5 pm on the road.

Mt. Pleasant will face off against Fort Madison tomorrow with the girls’ team playing at home at 4:30 pm and the boys’ team hitting the road for a 5 pm start time. 

The Burlington Notre Dame girls’ team will travel to Wapello on Saturday, May 9th, at 10 am, while the boys’ team will host Williamsburg on Saturday at 10:30 am.

The WACO boys’ team will travel to Columbus on Tuesday, May 12th, at 5 pm.

High School Golf

The Burlington girls’ team hosted the Grayhound Invite yesterday and Bettendorf walked away with the team title, while Burlington Notre Dame secured 2nd place with a team score of 380, which was just 20 strokes behind the Bulldogs. Fairfield finished in 6th place and New London and Danville took 8th and 9th place, respectively. 

Alexandria Booten for Notre Dame finished in 2nd place with a round of 73. Aubrey Nahorny carded a 99 to lead the Bears.

The Southeast Iowa Super Conference boys’ teams will meet for their conference showdown today at Flint Hills Golf Course.

The Southeast Conference boys’ team will have their conference meet today at Deer Run Golf Course. 

The Van Buren County girls’ team will hit the road to take on Fairfield tomorrow, May 7th.

The Washington girls’ team will compete in the Tigerette Invitational on Friday, May 8th.

The WACO girls’ team will travel to English Valleys for a meet on Friday.

The Southeast Iowa Super Conference girls’ teams will compete in their conference meet on Monday, May 11th.

High School Boys’ Tennis

The Southeast Conference tournament is scheduled for tomorrow, May 7th, in Fairfield. 

Southeast Iowa Playbook

Tune in to KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, tonight at 6 pm for a new episode of the Southeast Iowa Playbook with WACO being our school of focus. Our special guests will be Niles Reichenbach from the boys’ soccer team and Ryen Pepper, who is a member of the girls’ track and field team.

Southeastern Community College

The baseball team earned the #1-seed and a bye in the Region 11 Division II tournament; they will take on the winner between Des Moines Area Community College and Northeast on Friday, May 8th, at 3:30 pm at Merchants Park in Carroll, Iowa.  

The #2 softball team will host a best of three-game series against #3 Indian Hills Community College for the Region 11 Division I tournament today at 2 pm.

College Baseball and Softball

The Iowa baseball team demolished St. Thomas last night, 14-4. Kooper Schulte swatted a three-RBI double in the win. The Hawkeyes will travel to Nebraska on Friday, May 8th, with first pitch at 6 pm.

1915 – Babe Ruth hit his first major league home run while playing for the Boston Red Sox. The game was also his pitching debut. 

1953 – MLB St. Louis Browns Alva “Bobo” Holloman throws a no-hitter against the visiting Philadelphia A’s in his first career start, winning 6-0. He is one of just two pitchers in the modern era to complete this feat.

1954 – English athlete Roger Bannister becomes the first to run a sub-4 minute mile, recording a time of 3:59:4 at Iffley Road Track, Oxford.
