The Fellowship Cup Continues Mission Amid Rising Demand and Funding Challenges

As food insecurity rises and federal funding for food banks tightens, one area organization remains committed to its mission, relying on community support. The Fellowship Cup has over 40 years of support provided to Henry County, offering food assistance, rent & utility aid, medical transportation, and emergency services.

Programs like the Summer Sacks lunch initiative, school supply drives, and Thanksgiving meal assistance continue to see increased demand from the Cup. A rise in summer lunch program participation reflects growing financial strain on families. 12% of Henry County families live in poverty. In the last couple years, The Fellowship Cup has also seen more first-time visitors and working families using the food pantry than ever before. The organization also faces potential funding cuts to its Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP), which includes medical transportation and student mentorship initiatives.

Despite financial challenges, Executive Director Brown emphasizes that The Fellowship Cup’s mission remains unchanged. “We’re dependent on God first, and then our community,” he said, expressing gratitude for local businesses and volunteers who sustain their efforts.

Community members can support by donating funds, food, or volunteering in various programs. Visit thefellowshipcup.org to get involved.

High School Boys’ Postseason Basketball

For Class 1A Substate 4 District 8, in a rematch of last season, #10 Burlington Notre Dame executed on their sweet revenge, knocking Winfield-Mt. Union out of the playoffs with a 66-40 victory. The Wolves ended the season with a 14-10 record.

In the bottom half of the bracket, #3 WACO hung in with #2 Holy Trinity Catholic as the two squads were tied at 12 apiece at the end of the first quarter; but the Crusaders proceeded to shoot lights out, exiting with the victory 72-39.

Holy Trinity Catholic shot 60% from the field as four of their five starters finished the game in double figures as Luke Hellige led the way with a 24 point/10 rebound double-double. Crusader head coach John Hellige was happy to see his team share the ball,

“We didn’t know exactly what WACO was going to do, but we figured there would be some emphasis on Luke and Layne. So, you know we really talked in practice about taking advantage of the gaps no matter where they’re at and you know, be aggressive. You know, all these guys can play, they can all put the ball in the basket, and you know as soon as they get one or two to fall, they realize, ‘hey, you know I can do this.’ Yeah, total team effort.”

Christian Stacy put up 12 points for the Warriors as they finished the season with an 18-6 record. Warrior head coach Chayse Roth earnestly talked about his two senior leaders after the game,

“Yeah. I mean, Clayton Miller, he was a huge part of our team, he unfortunately got hurt right after Christmas and you know, that was a big blow for our team. I mean he was kind of our energy guy. He was our garbage guy, getting all those rebounds that we really needed and towards the end of the year we were really, really missing his activity on both sides of the floor. You know he’s going to be solely missed…”

“But Isaac Rich, what a great kid. I mean, he did so much for our team, way more than just scoring the basketball or, you know, playing defense. He is a leader. He was one of our captains. Really just kept everybody you know, kept the team together and that’s something that we’re really, really going to miss. You know, that’s one I wish was coming back, but he’s not. But we got a lot of young kids that will step up and we have some of those other players that will probably fill those shoes and take over that role for us.”

Henry County Fair Pulls out of the Tractor Pull for the 2025 Fair

Alicia Yocum with the Henry County Fair, visited The Board of Supervisors to request funding for general expenses, seeking $23,000—an increase from the $20,000 granted last year.

Alicia highlighted recent improvements, including rewiring fans in the cattle barn, modifying gates, and purchasing lighter pens for the growing sheep and goat exhibits. The fair repurposed old pens by selling them to another fair.

Financially, the fair saw an increase in donations from area businesses, ending the fiscal year with a positive balance.

Plans for this year’s fair include a new Friday night event, though details remain undisclosed, and the discontinuation of the truck and tractor pull due to financial losses.

While exact attendance numbers are difficult to determine, the Saturday night demolition derby drew over 1,500 spectators.
