Postseason Volleyball

First round action is in the books for 2025 after Classes 3A, 4A, and 5A held their first-round matchups last night. Here’s a look at last night’s action.

In Class 4A Region 1, Mt. Pleasant shook off a slow start in set one to sweep Keokuk last night 25-23, 25-16, and 25-18. It was a night where everyone got involved, Addison Clark led the team with 13 kills, Alex Scott compiled 10 kills and five aces, while Myah Starr and Jenna Schwartz combined for 15 kills with Schwartz adding two blocks to the winning effort. For Panther head coach Alicia Schrader, you could not have drawn it up any better,

“I think everybody-our middles had a lot of kills, everybody contributed. It was a really nice team effort; our passing overall was just great. So, we could set our middles every time if we wanted to. It was wonderful.”

Mt. Pleasant will make the trip to #1 Clear Creek Amana tomorrow, October 23rd, at 7 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm. Coach Schrader discussed why this team could be the one to pull off the upset,

“I mean, they’re experienced, they want to win, they put in the effort, they put in the work. I think they’re starting to feel that confidence too. So, I think going in there, playing freely, being confident, knowing that they can do it will be huge.”

In Class 4A Region 6, Burlington defeated Fort Madison in four sets to advance to North Scott tomorrow at 7 pm.

In Class 3A Region 2 action, Mediapolis won the first set, but it was Central Lee who was able to soar past the Bulldogs winning the next three sets to advance (17-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-22). Taylor Jones tabbed 15 kills and three blocks in the win, while Ellah Wagenbach led the Bulldogs with nine kills. Mediapolis finished the season with a 16-17 record.

Central Lee will face off against Assumption tomorrow at 7 pm on the road.

Lastly, both Fairfield and Washington were swept by their respective opponents in Class 3A Region 7 with the Trojans falling to West Liberty (22-25, 16-25, 23-25) and the Demons losing to Benton (22-25, 23-25, 20-25). Fairfield’s Leah Helmick collected 10 kills with Natalie Steele adding nine kills and three aces to the effort.

Postseason Volleyball

Classes 1A and 2A began their Regional play last night with Classes 3A, 4A, and 5A set to start their first round of Regionals tonight at 7 pm. Here’s a look at last night’s games.

In Class 1A Region 2, Burlington Notre Dame had complete control over last night’s contest with WACO, never trailing in a straight sets win (25-13, 25-10, 25-11). Chloe Wenzel led the offense with nine kills and four aces along with a couple of blocks in the win. Nike head coach Susan Reid was happy by the distribution by freshman setter Ainsley Conrad last night,

“Yeah, I thought our setter Ainsley did a great job, you know, mixing up the offense was just something we’ve been kind of harping on her about and practice and, you know, not being a, you know, just being a one-way street with our offense. So, I thought she did a great job with that.”

Wapello cruised to victory over New London, sweeping the Tigers 25-10, 25-18, and 25-17. Mila Jordan nabbed 13 kills and five aces in the winning effort.

Burlington Notre Dame will host Wapello tomorrow, October 22nd, at 7 pm. Coach Reid discussed what it means to get another home game with her team,

“Yeah, for sure, especially with 7 seniors, you know, they get one more time to play on their home court before they graduate. So that’s always exciting for them and just gives you kind of that advantage to play on your homecourt. So, we’re excited for Wednesday, for sure.”
