Burlington High School art teacher Tony Onesto has been named the Great Prairie Regional Teacher of the Year, recognizing his nearly three decades of dedication to inspiring creativity and confidence in his students. 

With 29 years of teaching experience, Onesto has helped countless emerging artists discover their talents and refine their craft. He holds a bachelor’s degree in art education from Morningside University and master’s degrees in education and educational leadership from Viterbo University. 

Throughout his career, Onesto has earned distinction for his innovative approach to art education. A former Iowa Middle School Art Educator of the Year, he continues to expand opportunities for students through his leadership of the Allied Creators Studio, which supports and showcases young artists. 

In his AP art courses, Onesto’s students have consistently exceeded both state and national average scores over the past three years. Beyond the classroom, he frequently presents at state and national art education conferences, fostering professional collaboration and sharing his passion for the arts. 

Onesto’s recognition as the Great Prairie Regional Teacher of the Year celebrates his ongoing commitment to nurturing artistic growth and creating an inclusive, inspiring environment for all learners. 

As more families seek food assistance, Hy-Vee is stepping up with a $125,000 donation to help combat hunger. 

The company announced it will give $100,000 to its Feeding America partner food banks to help maintain inventory and meet rising demand ahead of the holiday season. “Hy-Vee is committed to helping make sure no one goes hungry,” said Jeremy Gosch, Hy-Vee Chairman and CEO. 

An additional $25,000 will support DoorDash’s initiative to waive delivery and service fees for customers using food assistance benefits, helping families stretch their budgets further. 

The contribution adds to the more than $70 million in food and resources Hy-Vee has provided in the past year through donations, meal giveaways, and community programs. Feeding America has recognized Hy-Vee as a Visionary Partner—the organization’s highest honor for corporate support. 

The Iowa State Trapshooting Association has announced its 2025 State Teams, recognizing the top shooters from across the state in each competitive division. Among those honored this year are several talented marksmen and markswomen from our area. 

Representing Mount Pleasant, Izaac Zihlman earned a spot on the Elite Team, showcasing exceptional performance across singles, handicap, and doubles categories. 

Addison McGehearty of Mount Pleasant was named to the Women’s Team, demonstrating outstanding consistency and precision throughout the season. 

In the youth divisions, Mason Yocum was selected for the Junior Team, while Landon Yocum and Karson Yocum were both named to the Sub-Junior Team, reflecting a strong family tradition of trapshooting excellence. 

The 2025 Iowa State Teams highlight the best shooters in Iowa, celebrating skill, dedication, and sportsmanship within the sport. 

Mount Pleasant, Iowa — The heart of downtown Mount Pleasant has thrived for two decades under the steady, enthusiastic leadership of Lisa Oetken, who this year celebrates 20 years as Executive Director of Main Street Mount Pleasant.

Lisa joined the Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance in 2005 as the director of Main Street Mount Pleasant. She became a Nationally Certified Main Street Manager in 2008 and has since been a trusted resource for local businesses, providing training, technical assistance, and guidance to help downtown Mount Pleasant flourish. Under her leadership, countless businesses have received funding through grants, contributing to the district’s economic growth and revitalization.

One of Lisa’s most notable accomplishments was her instrumental role in helping the downtown district become part of the National Historic Downtown Registry, a designation that recognizes and protects the unique character of Mount Pleasant’s historic commercial core.

A native of Southeast Iowa, Oetken holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Iowa. Before joining Main Street Mount Pleasant, she spent ten years in retail management and owned her own business for five years, giving her firsthand experience in the challenges and opportunities small businesses face.
