High School Basketball

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will stay at home to take on Burlington Notre Dame tonight at 6:45 pm, while the Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will travel to Cedar Rapids Washington to start off the season at 7 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm. Head coach Eric Rawson discussed his team’s expectations with the season opener tonight,

“You know our expectations right now with the group that we have is having the ability to come in with a good attitude and attack the day; every day is a new day and let’s get better. You know, every time we’re in the gym and get better individually get better as a group, as a team and you know, hopefully by the end of, you know, we get through December or get into January and February and get some guys healed up and with the pieces that we have put together, you know, hopefully you can be at a very competitive level. You know, it’s just we got a young team at the varsity level being physical, basketball is a physical sport and you got to be very athletic. So, it’s going to be part of the piece that we’ll need to find.”

Van Buren County will host Cardinal with the girls’ facing off first at 6 tonight.

WACO will hit the road to play Holy Trinity Catholic tonight with the boys’ scheduled to play at 7 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union will square off against Louisa-Muscatine on the road tomorrow, December 3rd, with the girls’ playing first at 6 pm. 

Wapello will take on Pekin in a road matchup tomorrow night with the girls’ tipping off at 6 pm. 

Danville will face off against Mediapolis tomorrow at home with the boys’ playing first at 6 pm.

New London will travel to West Burlington tomorrow with the first game at 6 pm. 

Central Lee will tip off the season tomorrow against Holy Trinity Catholic on the road with the boys’ scheduled to follow the girls’ game at 7:30 pm.

Columbus will compete against Lone Tree on the road tomorrow with the girls’ playing first at 6 pm.

High School Wrestling

The Mt. Pleasant, Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union, Fairfield, Mediapolis, Van Buren County, and Wapello girls’ teams will compete in the Fort Madison Tournament tonight.

WACO will participate in the Washington County Quad meet tomorrow, December 3rd, at Washington. 

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will host a dual against Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union tomorrow at 6:30 pm. 

The Mediapolis boys’ team will compete in a quad at home tomorrow at 6 pm.

The Wapello boys’ team will host a triangular tomorrow at 6 pm. 

High School Bowling

Fairfield will square off against Washington at home today.

Mt. Pleasant will duel West Burlington tomorrow, December 3rd, at KingPins.

Southeastern Community College

The #13 men’s basketball team picked up another win over the weekend, beating Lake Land College 72-62 to end the Broadway Classic 2-0. The Blackhawks will host Kennedy-King College on Saturday, December 7th, at 7. 

College Football

#16 Iowa State’s defense sealed the program’s first 10-win season after defeating Kansas State 29-21. A blocked field goal and a safety gave the Cyclones the cushion needed as Rocco Becht finished the game with three total touchdowns (one rushing). Iowa State will face off against #12 Arizona State on Saturday, December 7th, at 11 am for the Big 12 conference championship. Their last conference championship occurred back in 1912. 

Iowa will await their bowl matchup, which will be announced on December 8th. 

College Basketball

The #5 Iowa State men’s team will host Marquette on Wednesday, December 4th, at 7 pm in the Big 12/Big East battle.

The Iowa men’s team will start conference play tomorrow, December 3rd, at 6 pm against Northwestern at home. 

The #15 Iowa State women’s team got back in the win column with a 75-59 victory against Middle Tennessee over the weekend. Audi Crooks commanded the lane with a team leading 21 points. The Cyclones will compete against USC Upstate tomorrow at 6:30 pm at home. 

The #22 Iowa women’s team will take on Tennessee in the Women’s Championship Classic on December 7th at 6 pm.

Elliott LaVahn Henderson

Elliott LaVahn Henderson, 7 weeks, of New London, died Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at his home.  He was born in Burlington on October 7, 2024 to Michael Alan Henderson and Mystery Lee Wade.

He loved cuddling with everyone, especially his big sister.  Besides his parents, he is survived by his sister Laelah Mae Henderson; Grandparents, Tonya Wade and Melinda Henderson both of New London; Casey and Michelle Henderson of West Point; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Safety Messages

The National Association of Fire Marshall’s has a message as we are experiencing winter temperatures.

If you are using a fuel burning appliance such as a space heater, woodstove, or a fireplace to stay warm, make sure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm when you use fuel burning appliances including space heaters and fireplaces.  Open a window for air circulation and to reduce carbon monoxide exposure.

 

A message from foodsafety.gov: Leftovers only last safely in the fridge for 3-4 days.  Frozen leftovers can be used within 3-4 months for the best quality!

The #13 men’s basketball team won the battle of the unbeatens last night in the Broadway Classic 65-60 against Lincoln Trail College. The Blackhawks will take on Lake Land College tonight at 5 pm. 

College Football

#18 Iowa State will punch their ticket to the Big 12 Championship game with a win against #24 Kansas State tonight at 6:30 pm at home. 

In a typical Iowa/Nebraska showdown, the low-scoring affair came down to a walk-off field goal and for the second straight year the Hawkeyes walked out with the Heroes Trophy with a 13-10 victory. Drew Stevens knocked home two field goals, including the game-winning 53-yard kick. The Hawkeyes will await their bowl matchup, which will be announced on December 8th. 

College Basketball

HCHC Diabetes Education Events – December

The Henry County Health Center Diabetes Education Department announced classes for the month of December.

Tuesday, December 3- Diabetes Support Group – Tips and Tricks to Managing your Diabetes Over the Holidays! 2-3 PM Suite 25. Please RSVP to Diabetes Education at 319-385-6518.

Thursday, December 12 – Annual Review Course, 1-3 p.m., Suite 25

Get refreshed, ask questions and connect with others! This class is aimed at those who have had diabetes for one or more years and would like a refresher! Call HCHC Diabetes Education at 319-385-6518 by noon on Tuesday, December 10, to reserve your spot. The day of class, register at the HCHC Registration Desk before proceeding to the class.

Monday, December 16- Diabetes Group Class – This class is aimed at those newly diagnosed with diabetes, or who have never taken an education class regarding their diabetes in the past. The class is 8:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Suite 25. There is a fee; however, many insurance plans cover the program. Call HCHC’s Diabetes Education Center at 319-385-6518 to register by Friday, December 13.
