Elliott LaVahn Henderson
Elliott LaVahn Henderson, 7 weeks, of New London, died Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at his home. He was born in Burlington on October 7, 2024 to Michael Alan Henderson and Mystery Lee Wade.
He loved cuddling with everyone, especially his big sister. Besides his parents, he is survived by his sister Laelah Mae Henderson; Grandparents, Tonya Wade and Melinda Henderson both of New London; Casey and Michelle Henderson of West Point; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

High School Basketball
The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will stay at home to take on Burlington Notre Dame on Monday, December 2nd, at 6:45 pm, while the Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will travel to Cedar Rapids Washington to start off the season at 7 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 6:45 pm.
Van Buren County will host Cardinal with the girls’ facing off first at 6 pm on Monday.
WACO will hit the road to play Holy Trinity Catholic on Monday with the boys’ scheduled to play at 7 pm.
Winfield-Mt. Union will square off against Louisa-Muscatine on the road on Tuesday, December 3rd, with the girls’ playing first at 6 pm.
Wapello will take on Pekin in a road matchup on Tuesday night with the girls’ tipping off at 6 pm.
Danville will face off against Mediapolis on Tuesday at home with the boys’ playing first at 6 pm.
New London will travel to West Burlington on Tuesday with the first game at 6 pm.
Central Lee will tip off the season on Tuesday against Holy Trinity Catholic on the road with the boys’ scheduled to follow the girls’ game at 7:30 pm.
Columbus will compete against Lone Tree on the road on Tuesday with the girls’ playing first at 6 pm.
High School Wrestling
The Mt. Pleasant, Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union, Fairfield, Mediapolis, Van Buren County, and Wapello girls’ teams will compete in the Fort Madison Tournament on Monday, December 2nd.
WACO will participate in the Washington County Quad meet on Tuesday, December 3rd, at Washington.
The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will host a dual against Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.
The Mediapolis boys’ team will compete in a quad at home on Tuesday at 6 pm.

High School Bowling
Fairfield will square off against Washington at home on Monday, December 2nd.

Southeastern Community College
The #13 men’s basketball team won the battle of the unbeatens last night in the Broadway Classic 65-60 against Lincoln Trail College. The Blackhawks will take on Lake Land College tonight at 5 pm.
College Football
#18 Iowa State will punch their ticket to the Big 12 Championship game with a win against #24 Kansas State tonight at 6:30 pm at home.
In a typical Iowa/Nebraska showdown, the low-scoring affair came down to a walk-off field goal and for the second straight year the Hawkeyes walked out with the Heroes Trophy with a 13-10 victory. Drew Stevens knocked home two field goals, including the game-winning 53-yard kick. The Hawkeyes will await their bowl matchup, which will be announced on December 8th.

The #5 Iowa State men’s team will host Marquette on Wednesday, December 4th, at 7 pm in the Big 12/Big East battle.
The Iowa men’s team will start conference play on Tuesday, December 3rd, at 6 pm against Northwestern at home.
The #15 Iowa State women’s team will take on Middle Tennessee today at 12:30 pm.
The #22 Iowa women’s team continued their winning ways after pummeling BYU last night 68-48. Hannah Stuelke led the way as she tied her season high in points with 16 on the night. The Hawkeyes will take on Tennessee in the Women’s Championship Classic on December 7th at 6 pm.

Monday, December 16- Diabetes Group Class – This class is aimed at those newly diagnosed with diabetes, or who have never taken an education class regarding their diabetes in the past. Opal Wiggins
Opal Wiggins, 98, of Trenton died Friday, November 29, 2024, at Van Vorhies Haus in Mount Pleasant.
Opal was born September 1, 1926, in Salina, Iowa, the eldest of eight children of Ray and Emma (Smith) Manning. She was raised in Coppock, lived in White Oak, Trenton and Mount Pleasant. She went to New York City as a teenager with band.
On June 19, 1943, Opal was united in marriage to Macy Dale Wiggins, in Kahoka, Missouri. The couple made their home on a farm outside of Trenton. She was a farm wife for many years and did any farm chore you can think of. Her early years were spent house keeping and babysitting. She worked for Rabadeax Produce in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Additionally, Opal worked for the hospital housekeeping, Van Vorhies Haus, and cleaned many homes well into her later years. Opal was always working.
She was a member of the Trenton United Methodist Church, UMF, and formerly of the Moose Lodge in Mount Pleasant. Dale and Opal loved to spend time together traveling, camping and fishing. Opal enjoyed quilting, sewing, crocheting, country music and dancing.
Opal is survived by two daughters, Esther (David) Lance of Trenton, Julie (Michael) Conner of Las Vegas, NV; four grandchildren Irene (Fred) Brown of Lockridge, Dale D. Lance of Trenton, Jodi (Partick) Pitrillo, Joni Perez both of Las Vegas, NV; six great grandchildren; and brother Lyle Manning of Bertram, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dale; daughter Retha Carol Wiggins; and six siblings, Anna Lowe, Gladys Lee, Delores Sinn, Carol Payne, Everett Manning and Patricia Manning.
Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at Olson-Powell Chapel & Crematory. Pastor Jeff McPheron will officiate. Burial will be in the Cottonwood Cemetery in rural Wayland. Visitation will be held from 1-7 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at the Olson-Powell Chapel & Crematory where the family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for Trenton United Methodist Church and the Van Vorhies Haus. www.powellfuneralhomes.com
