High School Track and Field

The 2024 State Track and Field meet is in the books and here are the highlights from championship Saturday and all our local state champions.

The day started off with a bang for Southeast Iowa as the Danville girls’ team of Kenna Furnald, Violet Sowell, Jaeda Molle, and Alaina Gourley grabbed the gold in the girls’ Class 1A sprint medley with a time of 1 minute and 51 seconds. 

The Danville boys’ team of Jaden Bauer, Kessler Whaley, Landon Seibert, and Ayden Doyle took 8th place with a time of 1 minute and 36 seconds.

Mediapolis started their late dash towards defending their Class 2A title with Owen Schmidgall claiming three points for the Bulldogs in the 800-meter run with a 6th place finish, running the race in 1 minute and 57 seconds. 

Moving to the boys’ Class 1A shuttle hurdle relay finals, Columbus added two seconds to their preliminary time and finished in 8th place with a time of 1 minute and 4 seconds. Johnathan Miranda, Riley Kaalberg, Alexander Rees, and Lamar Ceant added two points to the Wildcats’ total.

For the girls’ Class 1A 100-meter dash final, Rya Scott of Hillcrest Academy earned three points for the Ravens, finishing in 6th place with a time of 13.13 seconds. In Class 3A, Mt. Pleasant’s Alex Scott claimed a point with an 8th place time of 12.91 seconds.

Moving over to Class 4A, Mylee Stiefel crossed the finish line in 12.59 seconds to take 6th place and three points for the Grayhounds.

Landry Haberichter for West Burlington-Notre Dame clinched the silver with a time of 11.16 seconds in the boys’ Class 2A division. 

Noah Schmidgall picked up a key second-place victory for Mediapolis in the boys’ Class 2A 200-meter dash with a time of 22.58 seconds. At that point in the meet, the eight points lifted Mediapolis from 8th place to 2nd and only three points behind the leader, Spirit Lake.

In the long-distance events, Avery Rump of Fort Madison clinched two points for the Bloodhounds with a 7th place finish in the girls’ Class 3A 1500-meter run, finishing with a time of 4 minutes and 52 seconds. 

Mediapolis had their final push in the 1600-meter run. Solomon Zaugg finished with the silver, pacing his way toward a time of 4 minutes and 20 seconds. Owen Schmidgall grabbed 8th place with a time of 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

In the penultimate event of the meet, the girls’ Class 3A 4×100 meter relay saw the team of Kynlee White, Alex Scott, Bailey Jalas, and Andi Scott claim 5th place for Mt. Pleasant with a time of 49.36 seconds. 

In Class 4A, Burlington’s squad of Kierah Wiseman, Shariah Hart, Stiefel, and Sophie Brown claimed 4th place with a time of 49.07 seconds. 

On the boys’ side for Class 1A, Columbus’ squad of Juan Chairez, Kaalberg, Ceant, and Kaiden Amigon captured 2nd place and eight points with a time of 43.3 seconds. The Wildcats scored 15 points over the three days.

Danville’s team of Bauer, Whaley, Seibert, and Doyle finished in 4th place with a time of 43.69 seconds. The Bears scored nine points.

In the final event, the Danville girls’ team of Miya Orbiana, Molle, Delaney Newberry, and Gourley in Class 1A finished in 8th place with a time of 4 minutes and 14 seconds in the 4×400 meter relay. The Bears finished the meet with 20 points.

On the boys’ side for Class 1A, the team of Sheaden Adams, Kohlby Newsom, Ty Scorpil, and Gabriel Hemsworth grabbed 6th place with a time of 3 minutes and 28 seconds. The Wolves finished the meet with 12 points.

The team of Logan Rosas, Reese Campbell, Nathan Schmidgall, and Aedin Nelson finished in 6th place with a time of 3 minutes and 26 seconds. This officially gave Mediapolis 47 team points and their second consecutive Class 2A boys’ team title. 

Other state champions include: Burlington’s Kylee Hill in the girls’ Class 4A shot put, Fairfiled’s Eli Zillman’s first-place leap in the boys’ Class 3A high jump of 6 feet and 9 inches, and Solomon Zaugg of Mediapolis grabbed the gold with a time of 9 minutes and 19 seconds in the boys’ Class 2A 3200-meter run. 

High School Soccer

The Central Lee girls’ team will take on Assumption, the #1-seed, tomorrow, May 21st, at 7 pm in the Class 1A Region 1 semifinals. 

In the boys’ Class 1A Substate 6 postseason bracket, Central Lee will have their hands full when they travel to #1 West Branch tonight at 7 pm. 

In the bottom half of the bracket, Danville will face off against Mediapolis in the semifinal tonight at Mediapolis. 

In the boys’ Class 2A Substate 5 bracket, Keokuk will take on Williamsburg on the road tonight at 7 pm. 

Burlington Notre Dame will compete against Assumption today at 7 pm on the road. 

The Burlington Notre Dame girls’ team will take on Iowa City Liberty on the road tomorrow at 5:30 pm. 

In the bottom half of the bracket, the Fort Madison girls’ team will travel to Burlington tomorrow at 7 pm. 

High School Tennis

Jana Isanta of Mt. Pleasant will participate in the girls’ Class 1A State Singles tournament on Friday, May 24th, in Iowa City. 

High School Golf. 

The girls’ Class 1A state meet will take place at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown on Thursday, May 23rd, continuing into May 24th, with New London eyeing a team title. 

The Class 2A state meet will take place at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone on Thursday with Olivia Hines of Mediapolis competing as an individual and Mid-Prairie participating as a team. 

The boys’ state meet is set to begin today in Ames with Washington competing as a team for Class 3A at Veenker Memorial Golf Course and Winfield-Mt. Union for Class 1A at Ames Golf and Country Club.

High School Baseball

Mt. Pleasant will host Clear Creek Amana on Wednesday, May 22nd, at 7 pm.

Burlington Notre Dame participated in an invitational over the weekend at Don Bosco and defeated the host team in a high scoring match, 16-10. The Nikes will face off against Wapello tomorrow, May 21st, at 6 pm at the Field of Dreams in Dyersville.

West Burlington will host Keokuk tonight, at 7:30 pm. 

Central Lee will start their season tonight on the road against Fort Madison at 7 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union will take on New London tomorrow at 5:30 pm.

Mediapolis will square off against Lone Tree tomorrow at 5:30 pm at home. 

Van Buren County will face off against Hillcrest Academy tomorrow at 5:30 pm at home.

High School Softball

Central Lee will travel to Fort Madison tonight at 7 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union will hit the road to face off against New London at 7 pm tomorrow, May 21st.

Mt. Pleasant will scrimmage Winfield-Mt. Union today at 6 pm. 

Mediapolis will square off against Lone Tree tomorrow at 7 pm at home.

Van Buren County will travel to take on Fairfield at 7:30 pm tonight.

Des Moines, IA- Championship Saturday provides the perfect bookend to the 2024 State Track and Field Championships as teams lunged for that team title or individual glory. Here’s a look at how our local athletes fared today.

Running Events

Mt. Pleasant squad of Alex Scott, Bailey Jalas, Kynlee White, and Courtney Raub grabbed 22^nd place in the girls’ Class 3A division with a time of 1 minute and 55 seconds.

Meliah Ertz, Shariah Hart, Kierah Wiseman, and Mylee Stiefel finished in 16^th place with a time of 1 minute and 53 seconds for Burlington in Class 4A.

Three teams participated in the boys’ Class 1A sprint medley with one of the teams earning a point.

Danville’s team of Jaden Bauer, Kessler Whaley, Landon Seibert, and Ayden Doyle took 8^th place with a time of 1 minute and 36 seconds, collecting the point.

Columbus had Riley Kaalberg, Alexander Rees, Juan Chairez, and Damian Vergara finish in 12^th place with a time of 1 minute and 37 seconds, while Winfield-Mt. Union’s team of Abram Edwards, Brendan Simmons, Lane Genkinger, and Ty Scorpil finished in 19^th place.

In Class 3A, Aiden Krueter, Dylan Adam, Tallon Bates, and Ben Boatright grabbed 23^rd place.

For the 800-meter run, Danville’s Alaina Gourley took 21^st place with a time of 2 minutes and 28 seconds in the girls’ Class 1A division. In Class 3A, Iris Dahl of Washington finished in 23^rd place with a time of 2 minutes and 28 seconds.

The boys’ Class 1A 800-meter run had Winfield-Mt. Union’s Kohlby Newsom take 9^th place with a time of 2 minutes and Jackson Shacklett of Danville finished in 18^th place with a time of 2 minutes and 1 second.

Mediapolis had two competitors in the Class 2A division with Owen Schmidgall claiming three points for the Bulldogs with a 6^th place finish, running the race in 1 minute and 57 seconds. Logan Rosas claimed 9^th place with a time of 1 minute and 58 seconds.

Fairfield’s Gabe Tejada took 15^th in the Class 3A race with a time of 1 minute and 59 seconds.

Mediapolis continued their late strides toward the team title, gaining nine points in the boys’ Class 2A 1600-meter run. Solomon Zaugg finished with the silver, pacing his way toward a time of 4 minutes and 20 seconds. Owen Schmidgall grabbed 8^th place with a time of 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

In Class 3A, Washington’s Micah Rees took 10^th place with a time of 4 minutes and 25 seconds.

In the penultimate event of the meet, the girls’ Class 3A 4×100 meter relay saw the team of Kynlee White, Alex Scott, Bailey Jalas, and Andi Scott claim 5^th place with a time of 49.36 seconds. Mt. Pleasant finished with seven points.

In Class 4A, Burlington’s squad of Wiseman, Hart, Stiefel, and Sophie Brown claimed 4^th place with a time of 49.07 seconds. The Grayhounds finished with 23 points.

On the boys’ side for Class 1A, Columbus’ squad of Chairez, Kaalberg, Ceant, and Kaiden Amigon captured 2^nd place and eight points with a time of 43.3 seconds. The Wildcats scored 15 points over the three days.

Danville’s team of Bauer, Whaley, Seibert, and Doyle finished in 4^th place with a time of 43.69 seconds. The Bears scored nine points.

In the final event, the Danville girls’ team in Class 1A finished in 8^th place with a time of 4 minutes and 14 seconds in the 4×400 meter relay. The Bears finished the meet with 20 points.

On the boys’ side for Class 1A, the team of Sheaden Adams, Kohlby Newsom, Ty Scorpil, and Gabriel Hemsworth grabbed 6^th place with a time of 3 minutes and 28 seconds. The Wolves finished the meet with 12 points.

Lastly, with the team title firmly in their possession for Class 2A, the team of Rosas, Reese Campbell, Nathan Schmidgall, and Aedin Nelson finished in 6^th place with a time of 3 minutes and 26 seconds. This added three points to their total that earned the Bulldogs their second consecutive team championship.

High School Track and Field

It is time for championship Saturday for the 2024 State Track and Field Meet with plenty of local athletes aiming to give their team some more points or an individual championship. First, here’s some of the highlights from yesterday’s competition.

Aedin Nelson, Noah Schmidgall, Reese Campbell, and Logan Rosas grabbed the bronze for the boys’ Class 2A distance medley relay with a time of 3 minutes and 31 seconds, giving Mediapolis six more points to their team total. 

The girls’ Class 3A 400-meter hurdles produced five points for Washington as Ryen Pepper grabbed 4th place with a time of 1 minute and 6 seconds.

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ 4×100 meter relay team of Kynlee White, Alex Scott, Bailey Jalas, and Andi Scott will be competing today in the Class 3A finals after claiming 4th place with a time of 48.89 seconds.

Rosas, Campbell, Nathan Schmidgall, and Nelson of Mediapolis qualified for the boys’ Class 2A 4×400 meter relay finals today after finishing in 8th place with a time of 3 minutes and 28 seconds.

The Danville girls’ team of Kenna Furnald, Jadea Molle, Miya Orbiana, and Alaina Gourley in the Class 1A distance medley grabbed 3rd place with a time of 4 minutes and 13 seconds, giving the Bears six points.

Alexander Rees of Columbus qualified for the finals with a 7th place time of 15.48 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles. 

For the girls’ Class 1A 4×200 meter relay, the team of Furnald, Orbiana, Macie Wagner, and Molle finished in 8th place with a time of 1 minute and 48 seconds, which gave the Bears one point. 

Winfield-Mt. Union’s Gabriel Hemsworth earned four points for the Wolves in the 400-meter hurdles with a 5th place time of 55.82 seconds.

For the girls’ Class 4A 4×100 meter relay division, the team of Kierah Wiseman, Shariah Hart, Mylee Stiefel, and Sophie Brown grabbed 5th place to advance to the finals today with a time of 48.79 seconds.

In the boys’ Class 1A 4×100 meter relay, Danville’s team of Jaden Bauer, Kessler Whaley, Landon Seibert, and Ayden Doyle advanced with a time of 43.93 seconds, 7th best of the field. The team Juan Chairez, Riley Kaalberg, Lamar Ceant, and Kaiden Amigon finished in 2nd place with a time of 43.54 seconds. 

To finish off the running events for the day, the Danville girls’ team, and the Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ team competed in the 4×400 meter relay. The Bears team of Alain Gourley, Delaney Newberry, Wagner, and Furnald finished in 6th place to qualify for the finals today with a time of 4 minutes and 12 seconds. The Wolves had Sheaden Adams, Ty Scorpil, Hemsworth, and Kohlby Newsom take 8th place with a time of 3 minutes and 29 seconds to advance to the finals today. 

For field events, Burlington’s Kylee Hill won the girls’ Class 4A shot put with ease, heaving the shot 45 feet and 2.5 inches. 

Lastly, Burlington’s Keshawn Wyldon gained points for the Grayhounds with a 4th place leap of 22 feet and 7 inches in the boys’ Class 4A long jump.

The Central Lee girls’ team will take on Assumption, the #1-seed, on Tuesday, May 21st, at 7 pm in the Class 1A Region 1 semifinals.

The Burlington Notre Dame girls’ team was led by Julianna Hill’s herculean effort last night in the Class 2A Region 8 quarterfinal and defeated Mt. Pleasant 8-1. Hill scored five goals and tallied another two assists in the win. Aviana West added a hat trick to the winning effort. The Panthers finished the season with a 7-7 record. 

The Nikes will take on Iowa City Liberty on the road on Tuesday at 5:30 pm. 

In the bottom half of the bracket, Fort Madison smacked Keokuk 10-0 last night. Teagen Snaadt led the effort with a hat trick. The Bloodhounds will travel to Burlington on Tuesday at 7 pm.

This Day in Sports History

1897 – New York Giants third baseman Bill Joyce becomes the last player in baseball history to hit four triples in a game as the Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 11-5 at Exposition Park.

1988 – In the Oakland Athletics’ 39th game of the season, pitcher Dave Stewart breaks a major league record, committing his 12th balk of the season in a 4 – 1 loss to the Red Sox. Stewart will extend the record with 16 balks during the year.

2001 – At the time, 101-year-old Harold Stilson becomes the oldest golfer to record a hole-in-one when he aces the 108-yard, par-3, 16th hole at Deerfield CC, FL.
