High School Track and Field

The 2024 State Track and Field meet is in the books and here are the highlights from championship Saturday and all our local state champions.

The day started off with a bang for Southeast Iowa as the Danville girls’ team of Kenna Furnald, Violet Sowell, Jaeda Molle, and Alaina Gourley grabbed the gold in the girls’ Class 1A sprint medley with a time of 1 minute and 51 seconds. 

The Danville boys’ team of Jaden Bauer, Kessler Whaley, Landon Seibert, and Ayden Doyle took 8th place with a time of 1 minute and 36 seconds.

Mediapolis started their late dash towards defending their Class 2A title with Owen Schmidgall claiming three points for the Bulldogs in the 800-meter run with a 6th place finish, running the race in 1 minute and 57 seconds. 

Moving to the boys’ Class 1A shuttle hurdle relay finals, Columbus added two seconds to their preliminary time and finished in 8th place with a time of 1 minute and 4 seconds. Johnathan Miranda, Riley Kaalberg, Alexander Rees, and Lamar Ceant added two points to the Wildcats’ total.

For the girls’ Class 1A 100-meter dash final, Rya Scott of Hillcrest Academy earned three points for the Ravens, finishing in 6th place with a time of 13.13 seconds. In Class 3A, Mt. Pleasant’s Alex Scott claimed a point with an 8th place time of 12.91 seconds.

Moving over to Class 4A, Mylee Stiefel crossed the finish line in 12.59 seconds to take 6th place and three points for the Grayhounds.

Landry Haberichter for West Burlington-Notre Dame clinched the silver with a time of 11.16 seconds in the boys’ Class 2A division. 

Noah Schmidgall picked up a key second-place victory for Mediapolis in the boys’ Class 2A 200-meter dash with a time of 22.58 seconds. At that point in the meet, the eight points lifted Mediapolis from 8th place to 2nd and only three points behind the leader, Spirit Lake.

In the long-distance events, Avery Rump of Fort Madison clinched two points for the Bloodhounds with a 7th place finish in the girls’ Class 3A 1500-meter run, finishing with a time of 4 minutes and 52 seconds. 

Mediapolis had their final push in the 1600-meter run. Solomon Zaugg finished with the silver, pacing his way toward a time of 4 minutes and 20 seconds. Owen Schmidgall grabbed 8th place with a time of 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

In the penultimate event of the meet, the girls’ Class 3A 4×100 meter relay saw the team of Kynlee White, Alex Scott, Bailey Jalas, and Andi Scott claim 5th place for Mt. Pleasant with a time of 49.36 seconds. 

In Class 4A, Burlington’s squad of Kierah Wiseman, Shariah Hart, Stiefel, and Sophie Brown claimed 4th place with a time of 49.07 seconds. 

On the boys’ side for Class 1A, Columbus’ squad of Juan Chairez, Kaalberg, Ceant, and Kaiden Amigon captured 2nd place and eight points with a time of 43.3 seconds. The Wildcats scored 15 points over the three days.

Danville’s team of Bauer, Whaley, Seibert, and Doyle finished in 4th place with a time of 43.69 seconds. The Bears scored nine points.

In the final event, the Danville girls’ team of Miya Orbiana, Molle, Delaney Newberry, and Gourley in Class 1A finished in 8th place with a time of 4 minutes and 14 seconds in the 4×400 meter relay. The Bears finished the meet with 20 points.

On the boys’ side for Class 1A, the team of Sheaden Adams, Kohlby Newsom, Ty Scorpil, and Gabriel Hemsworth grabbed 6th place with a time of 3 minutes and 28 seconds. The Wolves finished the meet with 12 points.

The team of Logan Rosas, Reese Campbell, Nathan Schmidgall, and Aedin Nelson finished in 6th place with a time of 3 minutes and 26 seconds. This officially gave Mediapolis 47 team points and their second consecutive Class 2A boys’ team title. 

Other state champions include: Burlington’s Kylee Hill in the girls’ Class 4A shot put, Fairfiled’s Eli Zillman’s first-place leap in the boys’ Class 3A high jump of 6 feet and 9 inches, and Solomon Zaugg of Mediapolis grabbed the gold with a time of 9 minutes and 19 seconds in the boys’ Class 2A 3200-meter run. 

High School Soccer

The Central Lee girls’ team will take on Assumption, the #1-seed, tomorrow, May 21st, at 7 pm in the Class 1A Region 1 semifinals. 

In the boys’ Class 1A Substate 6 postseason bracket, Central Lee will have their hands full when they travel to #1 West Branch tonight at 7 pm. 

In the bottom half of the bracket, Danville will face off against Mediapolis in the semifinal tonight at Mediapolis. 

In the boys’ Class 2A Substate 5 bracket, Keokuk will take on Williamsburg on the road tonight at 7 pm. 

Burlington Notre Dame will compete against Assumption today at 7 pm on the road. 

The Burlington Notre Dame girls’ team will take on Iowa City Liberty on the road tomorrow at 5:30 pm. 

In the bottom half of the bracket, the Fort Madison girls’ team will travel to Burlington tomorrow at 7 pm. 

High School Tennis

Jana Isanta of Mt. Pleasant will participate in the girls’ Class 1A State Singles tournament on Friday, May 24th, in Iowa City. 

High School Golf

The girls’ Class 1A state meet will take place at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown on Thursday, May 23rd, continuing into May 24th, with New London eyeing a team title. 

The Class 2A state meet will take place at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone on Thursday with Olivia Hines of Mediapolis competing as an individual and Mid-Prairie participating as a team. 

The boys’ state meet is set to begin today in Ames with Washington competing as a team for Class 3A at Veenker Memorial Golf Course and Winfield-Mt. Union for Class 1A at Ames Golf and Country Club.

High School Baseball

Mt. Pleasant will host Clear Creek Amana on Wednesday, May 22nd, at 7 pm.

Burlington Notre Dame participated in an invitational over the weekend at Don Bosco and defeated the host team in a high scoring match, 16-10. The Nikes will face off against Wapello tomorrow, May 21st, at 6 pm at the Field of Dreams in Dyersville.

West Burlington will host Keokuk tonight, at 7:30 pm. 

Central Lee will start their season tonight on the road against Fort Madison at 7 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union will take on New London tomorrow at 5:30 pm.

Mediapolis will square off against Lone Tree tomorrow at 5:30 pm at home. 

Van Buren County will face off against Hillcrest Academy tomorrow at 5:30 pm at home.

High School Softball

Central Lee will travel to Fort Madison tonight at 7 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union will hit the road to face off against New London at 7 pm tomorrow, May 21st.

Mt. Pleasant will scrimmage Winfield-Mt. Union today at 6 pm. 

Mediapolis will square off against Lone Tree tomorrow at 7 pm at home.

Van Buren County will travel to take on Fairfield at 7:30 pm tonight.

West Burlington will face off against Keokuk at home tonight at 7 pm.
