Prep Volleyball: SEC Round-Up Heading into the Conference Tournament

Mount Pleasant, IA- The Southeast Conference (SEC) met up for one more regular season showdown before the conference tournament set to start next Tuesday, October 8th, and Burlington enters as the favorite, going a perfect 5-0 after a Keokuk sweep last night.

Here’s a dive into each of the three contests last night and the conference standings heading into the tournament.

Mt. Pleasant entered last night confident after defeating Fairfield twice this season, including in their last tournament in Ottumwa a week and a half ago. Add in a senior night celebration during homecoming week and all the momentum was on the Panthers side.

And that’s how the game started, Mt. Pleasant got out to an 8 to 5 lead in the first set as senior Zoey Atkinson tallied a kill, a block assist, and two aces in the opening frame. But what soon turned out to be the theme of the game, errors took over and Fairfield found a groove.

Elyse Setterstrom and the front row of the Trojans tied the game at 9 and never looked back, winning the first set 25-19. Fairfield head coach Vicki Rebling spoke on her team’s progress throughout the game.

“We started off a little slow, it seemed like we needed to get used to each other a little bit. Our feet weren’t moving all that well. So, more communication, we always talk about and practice our mouth moves our feet. So, the more we can talk about every ball, the more our feet start to react, and we get to the spots that we need to get to.”

Despite generating four aces in the first set, the Panthers struggled at the service line, committing too many errors after a side-out score. Alex Scott looked to change that, firing three aces in the second set.

However, Claire Thompson and Setterstrom combined for seven kills in the second frame and had the Trojans touting a 19 to 18 lead after trailing by as many as six, mid-way through the set.

That’s when Myah Starr generated a couple points with accurate shots, leading to the Trojan defense staring in disbelief. Moreover, a tense rally that saw both teams sprawling to save the ball, including a Fairfield pancake ended in a net violation and a Panther point.

Mt. Pleasant rode that wave of momentum and took the second set 25-20. Mt. Pleasant only held one other lead for the rest of the night. Fairfield jumped out to a 3 to 0 lead and led by as much as nine to win the third set 25-16.

That momentum carried into the fourth and final set of the night with Lilly Bergren collecting five of her nine kills in the set and joining up with Jaden Haynes at the net to total three of the squad’s eight blocks on the night.

Sonya Simon grabbed one of her three aces down the stretch, willing Mt. Pleasant back from a 22 to 14 deficit to make it 22 to 18; an aspect of the game head coach Logan Wall has been focused on all season,

“We’ve been doing some eye sequencing with our serve. So, trying to judge where the server is going to serve and make sure and communicate back in the back row. But I think I think Sonya really changed the momentum there in that last set. She got us back in the game.”

Fairfield would squash Mt. Pleasant’s momentum and win the final set 25-19 to take the match 3-1. Coach Rebling is hoping the win can provide her team the confidence needed to succeed at the conference tournament,

“I’m not gonna lie. They’ve had our number this year so far on. So, we’ve been, you know, talking a lot about that, preparing mentally, working on the little things and executing because, you know, it’s great to come into here tonight and get this win and go into the conference tournament knowing that we can beat them.”

Mt. Pleasant fell to 7-15 on the season, while Fairfield improved to 11-13.

Uncooperative Intoxicated Man Leads Deputies on Pursuit

An intoxicated driver led deputies on a pursuit in Des Moines County on Monday evening. Just before 7:20pm, Des Moines County deputies responded to the 14000 block of 145th St. for a report of an intoxicated driver in a red pickup truck. Upon arrival, they found the suspect had left the scene. After locating and attempting to stop the truck on 145th St, the driver took off and drove through a field. The driver, David Maupin, 45, of Burlington, eventually stopped the vehicle, and when deputies made contact, they found an uncased rifle lying on the back seat of the truck within arm’s reach.

Maupin refused to comply with the authorities when asked to step out of the vehicle, and he even locked the doors. The driver was eventually removed from the truck and was tazed by deputies. Maupin was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests and his 350-legend rifle was seized.

Maupin was placed under arrest for fail to yield to emergency vehicle, interference with official acts while armed with a firearm (D felony), person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons, and operating while intoxicated. He was transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center.

Maupin used his right of a phone call at the jail, and in a crazy twist, he called 911. He was advised to not do so again, or else he would be charged with false reporting for dialing 911 without legitimate purpose. Maupin then called 911 again and was charged for false reports. Maupin was asked to give a breath sample, and he consented, giving a sample over the legal limit.

Supervisors Debate Ordinance Changes for Alternative Energy at Work Session

The Henry County Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday morning for a work session. The only item discussed was the Alternate Energy Overlay District. Supervisor White voiced his frustration with the discussion over this topic not being tabled last week when he was out of town. He also asked multiple questions regarding the history of the alternate energy overlay district, such as the date that wind energy was first discussed in the county.

After watching a video of the Planning and Zoning Commission’s public hearing from September 17th, he believes that the board was “steered” by the director, Joe Buffington. This further prompted his question on why the board of supervisor’s meetings are not recorded for public use. White continued in his reservations of wind turbines, stating that we do not know the long-term effects of wind farm of this capacity. He believes the board owes it to the public not to rush this through.

One of White’s proposed changes focuses on setback measurements. “I believe that any setback measurements should be from the closest portion of a wind energy structure or equipment, regardless of what it is, to the property line of adjacent property owners.” White continues, “this would take into account the turbine blade offset from its foundation for example. This measurement would be a minimum of 3,960 ft. (3/4 mile)” During the meeting, he elaborated on this. If someone has a pond on the edge of their property, they may like to relax there. Since it is not technically a structure, the current ordinance means a turbine could be towering above. A full list of Supervisor White’s ordinance suggestions can be read here.

For the remainder of the meeting, board chair Greg Moeller read sections of the ordinance, often stopping to discuss further. The supervisors discussed multiple portions, such as the setback length, how far the turbines need to be buried after decommissioning, and signal interference to name a few.

More discussion will be had in the coming weeks. The supervisors will set a date for another work session at this Thursday’s regular meeting. Marc Lindeen, longtime supervisor, believes that they accomplished a lot at the meeting on Tuesday, and that they continue to move forward on this issue.
