Mary Scott
Mary Ellen Scott, 92, of Montrose, Iowa passed peacefully at 11:35 a.m. Thursday, August 29, 2024, at the Montrose Health Center with friends at her side. Finally making the journey to be with the love of her life, Andrew Scott. 
She was born June 29, 1932, the daughter of Alexis and Ruby (VanAusdall) Sailor in Ottumwa, Iowa. She married Andrew Scott on September 16, 1950. He preceded her in death.
She enjoyed being social and talking with friends and acquaintances. She liked sewing, gardening, and cooking. She was an avid collector of knick-knacks and could always be found reading. Her favorite book was the Bible. Any book that would further her knowledge was of interest to her no matter the subject.
She was preceeded in death by her husband: Andrew; brothers: Bill Sailor (Montrose, IA), Leonard Sailor (Los Angeles, Calif), Harry Sailor (Warren, Minn) and John Sailor (Los Angeles, Calif).
She leaves behind a brother-in-law: David Scott (Courtland, Va); two children: Stephen & Pam Scott (Duluth, Minn) and Christie Cain (Rosalie, Ne); grandchildren: Jesse & Terri Scott (Sioux City, IA), Shad & Sarah Scott (Dakota Dunes, SD), Richard & Mallisa Cain (West Point, IA), Andy & Trisha Cain (S. Sioux City, Ne), Caleb & Molly Cain (Donnellson, IA) and Sarah Cain & Robert McMurray (Donnellson, IA). She had 27 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Special thanks and recognition to the staff at Montrose Health Center and her best friend, and partner in crime, Pam Ciciliano.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at the Montrose Cemetery with Elaine Foley officiating.
A memorial has been established in her memory for the Montrose Health Center.

Vicki Hawkins
Vicki Hawkins, 78, of Geneseo, Illinois, passed away at 11:55 p.m., Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at Unity Point Health in Rock Island, Illinois. 
She was born on October 30, 1945, in Moline, Illinois, the daughter of Alvin W. “Bud” and Helen Alice (Misfeldt) Beaty.
She is survived by her children: Martha (Dean Wood) Hawkins of Monroe, Iowa, Larry (Vickey) Hawkins of Jefferson City, Missouri, Adam (Sara) Hawkins of Geneseo, Illinois; grandchildren: Heather (Chris) Conoan, Dallas (Amanda) Lovell, Ryan (Phylicia) Hawkins, Matthew (Trinity) Hawkins, Jynessa (Alex) Jin, Taylor Hawkins, Aiden Hawkins, Camryn Hawkins; great grandchildren: Azalea, Trenton and Daisy Conoan, Ryan, Posy, Malibu, Shaylee, Ryalee and Kara Hawkins; two sisters: Carol (Harold) Carter of Keosauqua, Iowa, LouAnn (Gary) Glover of Keokuk, Iowa; four brothers: Frank (Katherine) Beaty of Ocean City, Maryland, David (Kathy) Beaty of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Paul (Peggy) Beaty of Winfield, Iowa, Robert (Rochelle) Beaty of Holcomb, Illinois. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents: husband: Charles Hawkins and two brothers: John and Duane Beaty.
Vicki was a 1964 graduate of Harmony High School. She graduated from Southeastern Community College with a Bachelor of Nursing degree. She worked as a nurse in various departments at the Keokuk Area Hospital until her retirement. She was a member of the Eldridge United Methodist Church and the Lion’s Club in Eldridge. Vicki enjoyed watching movies/TV series, reading, listening to music and attending her grandchildren’s activities. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes sports fan. She had a great sense of humor and loved to discuss current events. Most of all, Vicki was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother, who loved spending time with her family. She was affectionately named “Goober” by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 9, 2024, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 9, 2024, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington, with Pastor Chad Welch officiating.
Burial will be held at a later date at Blackledge Cemetery.
Memorials have been established in her memory for Farmington Methodist Church or Blackledge Cemetery.

High School Football
WACO will travel to Iowa Valley tonight at 7 pm for their first district game of the season.
Fairfield will stay at home to take on Fort Madison tonight at 7:30 pm.
Mt. Pleasant will have their home opener tonight against West Burlington/Notre Dame at 7:30 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 7:15 pm.
Danville will travel to take on Highland tonight at 7 pm.
New London will square off against Winfield-Mt. Union tonight at 7 pm on the road.
Van Buren County will face off against Pekin tonight at 7 pm on the road.
Central Lee will travel to Cardinal tonight at 7 pm.
Mediapolis will compete against Sigourney-Keota tonight at 7 pm at home.
Columbus will look to get back on track against Wapello tonight at 7 pm at home.
High School Volleyball
Mt. Pleasant took the first set last night 25-21, but the Panthers were unable to scrape past Albia as they took the next three sets 25-23, 25-23, and 25-22 to exit with the win. The Panthers will attempt to get back in the win column on Tuesday, September 10th, at home against Fort Madison with the opening serve at 7:15 pm.
Winfield-Mt. Union threw all they had at Class 2A’s #13 Lisbon, but ultimately fell to the Lions in three sets 16-21, 21-14, and 8-15. The Wolves will compete at a tournament tomorrow, September 7th, at English Valleys along with WACO.
Central Lee dominated Keokuk last night in a sweep: 25-13, 25-12, and 25-19. Taylor Jones was a force at the net with a game leading 11 kills and five blocks. Kenna Sandoval was a jack-of-all-trades, capturing 10 kills, 18 assists, and six aces in the win. The Hawks will host Mediapolis on Tuesday at 7:30 pm.
Mediapolis lost to Washington 3-0 in close sets by scores of 25-22, 25-21, and 25-20. Bryn Wright dished out 25 assists and notched two aces in the effort.
WACO hosted a quad last night and finished with a 2-1 record. The Warriors swept Cardinal handily 25-13 and 25-16 as Carlee Lunsford, Brenna Graber, and Ally Rinner each tallied three kills in the win; and picked up a third set victory against New London 15-10 after the Tigers took the second set 25-21. Lunsford led the squad with four service aces in the win. Their lone loss came against Fairfield in straight sets 25-12 and 25-16. Lilly Bergren and Claire Thompson grabbed seven kills apiece in the win against the Warriors.
Fairfield swept their entire competition with set wins of 25-13 and 25-11 against New London and a 25-21 and 25-13 victory over Cardinal. Iris Lane finished with three aces against the Comets as Bergren collected 17 kills in their three games.
Fairfield will travel to Keokuk on Tuesday at 7:15 pm.
Van Buren County fell to Pella Christian last night 21-8 and 21-11.
Danville, New London, West Burlington, and Van Buren County will compete in a tournament at Burlington Notre Dame tomorrow, September 7th.
Holy Trinity Catholic will look to right the ship on Tuesday against Danville at 7:30 pm on the road.
High School Volleyball Rankings
The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released their second rankings of the season and the first of the regular season. Here’s how our local teams fared in the recent round of rankings.
In Class 2A, West Burlington’s lone loss to Class 3A’s #6 Mid-Prairie in a three-set thriller proved to not affect the Falcons’ ranking; in fact, the 7-1 squad moved up two spots to be ranked 9th this week. Taryn Snodgrass directs the offense with 164 assists on the season as Brenna Beggs and Madelyn Hamelton combine for 117 kills.
Class 1A features two local teams who are accustomed to the attention but are on different trends. Holy Trinity Catholic’s 1-2 stand at the Wapello Invite knocked the Crusaders from 2nd to 5th in this week’s edition of the rankings.
Entering the rankings to the #13 slot is Burlington Notre Dame. The Nikes are 6-1 through the beginning of the season with their lone loss to Mediapolis in three sets at the Wapello Invite. Chloe Wenzel has stepped up nicely for the Nikes as she has collected 26 kills and a team leading 10 blocks and 11 aces.
High School Cross Country
The Danville girls’ and boys’ teams each started off the season with a victory last night at Wildwood Park.
On the girls’ side, the Bears finished with 66 points, 22 points better than second place. Fairfield’s squad finished in 8th place with 163 points.
Looking at the standings for the boys’ teams, Danville sat 20 points above Van Buren County who claimed second place with 55 points. Fairfield finished in 4th place with 117 points.
Fairfield will host their invitational on Thursday, September 12th, with Burlington Notre Dame, Central Lee, Danville, Holy Trinity Catholic, Mediapolis, Mt. Pleasant, Winfield-Mt. Union, Van Buren County, and New London all attending.
Winfield-Mt. Union, New London, Danville, Holy Trinity Catholic, Meidapolis, and Van Buren County will run on Tuesday, September 10th, at 4:30 pm at the Riverview Club.
Southeastern Community College
The volleyball team fell to Indian Hills Community College in straight sets 25-18, 25-17, and 25-20. The Blackhawks will face off against Des Moines Area Community College on Wednesday, September 11th, at 7 pm on the road.
College Football
#21 Iowa is set to host this year’s rendition of the Cy-Hawk Series tomorrow, September 7th, at 2:30 pm. The Iowa broadcast will be on 105.5 FM and the Iowa State broadcast will be on 98.5 FM and AM 1130.

UPDATE: Suspect Deceased After Chase Through Henry County, No Injuries for Officer who was Shot At
On September 5, 2024, at approximately 18:30 hours, officers with the Mt. Pleasant Police Department were dispatched to an alleged domestic incident in the City of Mt. Pleasant. During officers’ response to the alleged domestic, the suspect drove by the scene and officers attempted to make contact with him.
When officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, the suspect did not stop his vehicle and proceeded to drive through intersections without obeying traffic signs. Near the corner of W Henry Street and N Jefferson Street, the suspect, while still in his vehicle, shot at a Mt. Pleasant Police Officer in his patrol vehicle several times. The suspect then fled in his vehicle at a high rate of speed. The suspect eventually lost control of his vehicle on Highway 218 and 185th Street.
Officers approached the vehicle and determined that the suspect was deceased. Names of the suspect and officer are being withheld pending notification. Throughout the entire incident, no officers discharged their weapons. The City of Mt. Pleasant requested the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations to assist with the investigation, and the investigation remains ongoing at this time.
This was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public. The Mt. Pleasant Policer Officer who was shot at was treated and released with no injuries.
The Mt. Pleasant Police Department was assisted by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations, Henry County EMS, and Breuer’s Towing.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation and a suspect or charged party is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

There was a disturbance yesterday evening in Henry County which saw a suspect located by law enforcement. The Mt. Pleasant Police Department and Henry County Sheriff’s Office were among the agencies involved.
We do know that an alert was put out on the HCSO FB page asking the public to be on the lookout for a white male on foot in the Highway 218/185th St area. Reports suggest the subject may have been armed. Little details are known about this incident at this time, but there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Single Vehicle Rollover on Thursday Morning
There was a single vehicle rollover on Thursday morning. This took place on Highway 218 and 180th St. The vehicle rolled and ended up in the median. The driver went to the hospital and the condition of the driver is unknown at this time.
Trenton first responders, Mt. Pleasant Fire Department, HCHC, HCSO, and Iowa State Patrol all responded.
