1st Place for Van Buren County High School in Statewide Art Contest

Iowa Workforce Development and the Iowa Department of Education announced the winners of the Build Iowa’s Future Design Challenge, an opportunity for K-12 students to create innovative projects, connect to rewarding careers and compete for up to $1,000 awards for their schools.

First-place awards of $1,000 each will be made to the following schools for outstanding submissions by their teams: DeSoto Intermediate in the elementary school division; ADM Middle School (Adel) in the middle school division; and Van Buren County High School (Keosauqua) in the high school division. 2nd place winners received $500 with third place earning $300.

Elementary and middle school students participated in the Design Challenge by constructing a model home using toy plastic construction bricks, wood blocks, or other materials and making the case for why it would be a great place to live. High school students designed a project that could improve their communities. About 200 students across Iowa were involved.
1st place in the highschool division is a project titled “warrior café.” Congratulations to Van Buren County High School and teacher, Stefany Walls. The same teacher oversaw the project “farm life” in the middle school, which took 2nd place in that division!

Hot and Humid Heat Index to Reach into Triple Digits Today

It’s going to be a hot and humid day, according to the National Weather Service. High temperatures in the low to mid 90s are expected, with the heat index reaching around 100 degrees in the afternoon.

Limit your time outdoors and wear loose, light colored clothing. Make sure to lather up in sunscreen to avoid burns, and drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Check on children, elderly, and pets, throughout the day, and never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle. As the saying goes, look before you lock.

If someone is suffering from the heat, remove them from the environment. Consider placing them under a large tree with shade or bringing them to a vehicle with air conditioning. Public places like the mall or library are a great way to cool down on hot days.

This heat advisory will remain in effect through Tuesday evening.
