2024 Choose Iowa Calendar Contest

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig is encouraging school-aged Iowa students to participate in the 2024 Choose Iowa Calendar Contest hosted by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. Choose Iowa is the state’s signature brand for Iowa grown, Iowa raised and Iowa made products.

Submitted artwork should feature at least one aspect of Iowa agriculture, with an emphasis on food, livestock or crop production. Submissions will be judged on creativity and connections to agriculture in everyday life.

Secretary Naig will recognize the winning artists during a special awards ceremony on Tuesday, August 13 in the Agriculture Building at the 2024 Iowa State Fair. Winning submissions will also be included in the 2024/2025 Choose Iowa calendar distributed by the Department during the Iowa State Fair and online at ChooseIowa.com.

School-aged Iowa students up to 18-years-old are invited to participate in the contest. Pictures should be drawn on plain white, 8.5 by 11-inch paper in a horizontal orientation using only black lines. The pictures should not be colored in. Entries can be submitted via the form found on the Choose Iowa website, emailed to chooseiowa@iowaagriculture.gov or mailed to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Attn: Coloring Calendar, 502 E. 9th St., Des Moines, Iowa, 50319. Each submission should include the registration sheet also found at chooseiowa.com/kids-teachers with basic information about the artist, including the artist’s name, age, grade, school, hometown as well as the name, email and phone number of a parent or guardian. If the artwork is submitted by the student’s teacher, then the teacher’s name and contact information should be included.

To be eligible for consideration, artwork submissions must be received by the Department by June 3, 2024.

Catherine Jean Scott Keefe Beavers

Catherine Jean Scott Keefe Beavers, 100, of Mount Pleasant died Friday, April 12, 2024, at Park Place Elder Living in Mount Pleasant.

Jean was born June 20, 1923, in Mount Pleasant, the daughter of Leo and Mary Alice (Burns) Scott. On August 24, 1949, Jean was united in marriage to T.W. “Bill” Keefe. He passed away in December 1970. In 1981, Jean was united in marriage to Max Beavers. She worked at the Henry County Mental Health Center for many years, retiring in 1997. Jean was a devoted member of St Alphonsus Catholic Church and active in her community.

Jean is survived by her children: James Keefe of Kyle, Texas, Elaine Keefe Brown of Iowa City, Dennis Keefe of Iowa City, Teresa Keefe O’Meara of Traer. Also surviving are step children: Ron Beavers, Rick Beavers, Randy Beavers, Kathy Aicher, Kim Steffes, Rob Beavers, Kerry Luko: many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, infant daughter Joan, son-in-law David Brown, two brothers Mark and Francis Scott, and five sisters Winifred Hunting, Ruth Fern, Anna Lee Scott and infant twins, Martha and Louise.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at the Olson-Powell Chapel and Crematory where the family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant. Burial will be at a later date in the St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for Mount Pleasant Public Library and Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice. The Olson-Powell Chapel and Crematory is caring for Jean and her family.

IHSAA Releases Boys’ Tennis District Sites

Prep Tennis- With the postseason rapidly approaching for Iowa spring sports, the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) released their sites for tennis district singles and doubles meets for the 2024 postseason.

Districts are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, May 8th, for Classes 1A and 2A with May 9th acting as a rain date. Individual qualifiers will advance to the State Championship being held in Iowa City for Class 2A and Waterloo for Class 1A on May 21st and 22nd. Each class will have 16 singles and doubles qualifiers.

Class 2A District Sites

Iowa City, West, Linn-Mar, Marion, Marshalltown, Mason City, North Scott, Eldridge, Norwalk, Sioux City, North, and Valley, W.D.M.

Class 1A District Sites

Boone, Columbus Catholic, Waterloo, Decorah, Denison-Schleswig, Fairfield, Pella, Red Oak, and Spencer.

District assignments and substate team assignments will be made available the week of April 22nd.
