Paved Roads in Better Shape, Gravel Roads Difficult to Pass

A message from the Henry County Engineer, Jake Hotchkiss, reveals that the plow truck drivers are working hard to clear our roads. He mentions that the extreme temperatures, in conjunction with the snow amounts, make it difficult to keep the equipment running. They are continuing to cover ground each day, but with blowing snow over the weekend, much of their hard work was soon covered up.

According to Hotchkiss, pavements are passable. He urges drivers to drive with caution as drifting is still occurring and there is ice on many roads.

At this moment, many gravel roads are impassable, as snow drifts are impossible to drive thru. Please do not attempt to drive through the snow drifts. Please continue to be patient, as many people are working very hard to ensure the roads are clear during this unprecedented storm.

High School Basketball

The Mt. Pleasant girls team will travel to Danville tonight to face off against the Bears at 6 pm with the JV going first. 

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will hit the road to take on Oskaloosa tomorrow, January 16th, with tip-off scheduled for 7:45 pm. 

WACO versus Wapello scheduled for tonight has been postponed. The games will be made up on January 27th. 

Winfield-Mt. Union will tango with WACO tomorrow with the girls’ game scheduled to start at 6 pm. The two split the matchup back in December with the WACO girls winning and the Winfield-Mt. Union boys taking their contest. 

Van Buren County and Cardinal’s matchup tonight has been canceled. The Warriors will square off against West Burlington tomorrow on the road with the girls’ game starting at 6 pm. 

Central Lee will travel to compete against Burlington Notre Dame tomorrow with the first game starting at 6 pm. 

New London will face off against Danville in a road conference matchup tomorrow with the girls scheduled to start at 6 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 5:45 pm. 

Mediapolis will face off against Holy Trinity Catholic tomorrow at 6 pm. 

Holy Trinity Catholic had their games against Fort Madison over the weekend postponed. The teams are still looking to schedule a makeup date. 

High School Wrestling

The WACO boys’ team will compete in a triangular against Lone Tree and Van Buren County on Thursday, January 18th, at home. 

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ team will host a triangular on Thursday against Pekin and Louisa-Muscatine.  

New London will travel to Highland on Thursday to take on the host team and Mediapolis in a meet. 

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ and girls’ teams will compete in a dual against Fairfield on Thursday. 

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team will participate in a tournament hosted by Louisa-Muscatine on January 20th.

The WACO girls’ team’s meet at Mid-Prairie tonight has been canceled. The Warriors will travel to Colfax-Mingo for a meet on Saturday. 

High School Bowling

Mt. Pleasant will host Fairfield on Thursday, January 18th. 

College Basketball

The #3 Iowa women’s team outscored #14 Indiana by 21 points in the second half to trounce the Hoosiers 84-57. Caitlin Clark had a game high 30 points and collected 11 assists to finish with a double-double. Kate Martin also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Hawkeyes will host Wisconsin tomorrow, January 16th, at 8 pm. 

The Iowa State women’s team has done it again as the Cyclones defeated #4 Baylor over the weekend 66-63 for another upset win. Leading the way for the Cyclones was Audi Crooks and Hannah Belanger as Crooks scored 23 points and Belanger finished with 15 points. Iowa State will travel to take on Texas Tech on Wednesday, January 17th, at 6 pm. 

The Iowa State men’s team handled business in their Big 12 weekend matchup against Oklahoma State, winning 66-42. Tamin Lipsey was one of the four Cyclones to finish in double figures as he cashed in for a game high 17 points. Iowa State will face off against BYU tomorrow at 8 pm on the road. 

The Iowa men’s team will travel to Minnesota tonight at 5 pm.

Darrell “Goose” Blint

Darrell Douglas “Goose” Blint, 75, of West Point, died Thursday, January 11, 2024 at his home.  He was born December 17, 1948 in Ft. Madison to Delbert and Hazel Madeline Pickle Blint.  On December 1, 1973 he married Linda M. Gordy in New London.

He was a graduate of Ft. Madison High School, then served in the Army in Germany during the Vietnam war.  He worked as a painter for J.I. Case Company until retiring in 1999.  Darrell enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting, junk-yarding, and in his retirement years worked for Rick’s Auto Sales.  He was a board member of Burge Cemetery Association.

Survivors include his wife, Linda of West Point; daughter Dellanna (Joel) Tiemeier of Germansville, Pensylvannia; sons Anthony (Angie) Blint of Mt. Pleasant and Nathan Blint of West Point; six grandchildren, Nick (Holly) Blint, Josh Tiemeier, Victoria (Jameson) Skalinski, Abby Blint, Aiden Blint and Lily Blint; one great-granddaughter; and one sister.  Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Jennifer.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  Elliott Chapel, New London, is assisting the family with arrangements and online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.

Flags at Half Staff for Perry High School Principal

Today, Governor Kim Reynolds issued the following statement on the death of Dan Marburger, principal of Perry High School: 

 

“Our entire state is devastated by the news of Dan Marburger’s death. Kevin and I offer our deepest condolences to his wife and family as we pray for their comfort during this very difficult time. Dan courageously put himself in harm’s way to protect his students, and ultimately gave his own life to save them. He will forever be remembered for his selfless and heroic actions. May he rest in peace.” 

 

Gov. Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff on Sunday, January 14, 2024, and remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of Mr. Marburger’s funeral and internment.  

 

Flags will be flown at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be at half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.     

 

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.       

Wanda Pogemiller

Wanda Pogemiller, 94, of Wapello passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024 at the Wapello First Presbyterian Church.  Memorial Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024 at the church.  A time of food and fellowship will follow in the church fellowship hall.  Burial will be in the Wapello Cemetery at a later date.  Memorials may be directed to the Wapello Ambulance and the Wapello Presbyterian Church.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.  Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Wapello are caring for Wanda’s family and her arrangements.

 

Wanda Jean Grim was born on May 19, 1929 in Morning Sun Township, Louisa County, Iowa, the daughter of James Russell and Dorothy (Thomas) Grim.  Wanda was a 1947 graduate of Wapello High School.  On January 17, 1948, Wanda was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Pogemiller in Wapello.  Wanda was a member of the Wapello First Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star, had served on the Wapello Cemetery board and also worked the polls for many elections. She was the classic Housewife/Mother of the 1950’s/60”s and legendary in her pursuit of her cleanliness in the home.   She and  Bob loved traveling to Arizona in the winter where they watched spring training and went antique shopping for pickle castors, biscuit jars and butter churns.  Wanda liked to play cards frequently, playing several times a week with various card groups – both womens and mixed couples.  She enjoyed golfing, attending Iowa football games and catching her children and grandchildren’s activities.  To her family she was known as the “World Champion of Gift Wrapping”-as every gift large or small for every special occasion and Christmas was always wrapped very delicately and always topped with a bow.

 

Wanda will be deeply missed by her children, Rick (Kay) Pogemiller of Bellevue, Iowa and Jayne McCulley of Mediapolis; grandchildren, Clint (Katherine) Pogemiller, Matt (Deb) Pogemiller, Scott Pogemiller, Marc (Wendy) Whipple, Kimberley Rossiter (Joe), Allison (Joe) Malandra, Lindsey (Eric) Hausknecht, J.R. McCulley and Tanner (Ellen) McCulley and great-grandchildren, Ethan, Jack, Grace, Owen, Victoria, Diana, Kolt, Kash, Kwyn, Gianna, Tenley, Aslyn, Ronan, John, Jacob and Josephine.

 

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob Pogemiller on September 21, 2009; daughter, Denise Whipple and two brothers, Delbert and Neil Grim.

The Iowa men’s team shocked Nebraska last night, taking down the Cornhuskers handily 94-76. Six Hawkeyes finished in double figures as Owen Freeman and Payton Sandfort collected double-doubles. Freeman scored 22 points and gathered 10 rebounds, while Sandfort cashed in for 19 points and 10 boards. The Hawkeyes will travel to Minnesota on Monday, January 15th, at 5 pm.

Multiple Arrests Made in Burlington

The Burlington Police Department would like to announce multiple arrests over the past 24 hours regarding three separate incidents.
January 11, 2024
Burlington Police Detectives learned that Tyreon Woodard was in the Burlington area and had an active Federal Warrant for Probation Violation. With the assistance of the United States Marshals, the West Burlington Police Department and the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office, Woodard was located in the 200 Blk of S. Starr and taken into custody without incident.

At approximately 3:09 p.m. Burlington Police Officers were dispatched to the 1100 Blk of Valley St. for a report of Shots Fired. While in the area Officers located evidence of shots being fired in front of 1122 Valley St. Officer located Jordan Simon in 1122 Valley St. Simon had Iowa State Warrants for Escape and Involuntary Absence from Custody. Simon was taken into custody without incident. A Search Warrant was conducted and further evidence was gathered. The investigation into the shots fired is still under investigation and additional arrests are anticipated.

At approximately 11:07 p.m. Burlington Police Officers were dispatch to a call for service at 2602 Flint Hills Dr. A resident there was identified as Matthew Gibbs. While inside the residence Officers noticed evidence of marijuana and psilocybin growing operations. The Southeast Iowa Narcotics Task Force responded to the scene and executed a Search Warrant. As a result of evidence located Matthew Gibbs was placed under arrest and charged with Manufacturing Psilocybin Mushrooms, Manufacturing Marijuana, 3 counts of Drug Tax Stamp Violation, Child Endangerment, Possession of Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
