Boys’ Prep Basketball: Mount Pleasant Falters Late in Road Loss

Mount Pleasant led 7-5 after one quarter but saw Burlington rally in the second half, outscoring the Panthers 36-26 to pick up a 57-43 last night over Eric Rawson’s group.

Merquiche Lewis was the key cog for the Grayhounds, finishing with a game-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

Jackson Carlson added 12 points while Amarion Davis finished with nine.

Mount Pleasant was led by Payton Hagans and his 14 points — Owen Vansickel had 10.

The win kept conference title hopes alive for Burlington, as they improved to 12-7 and 7-2 in league play.

Mount Pleasant fell to 8-10 and 3-6 in Southeast Conference play.

Boys’ Prep Basketball: Boys’ Shootout Games Tonight

The Super Conference will will play their Shootout Games tonight, with the conference title being played for in New London.

Prep Wrestling: Sectionals Begin Today

Today marks the beginning of the wrestling state tournament trail with sectionals being wrestled statewide in Class 1 and 2A.

In Class 1A, area wrestlers will compete at English Valleys and Sigourney while Class 2A area programs will wrestle at Benton Community and Solon.

Area Administrator A Finalist for Burlington Position

The Burlington School District has narrowed the field to three finalists in the process to find a new superintendent. On the short list are…Fairfield School Superintendent Dr. Laurie Noll, Clear Creek Amana Community School District Interim Superintendent Joseph Brown and Director of Athletics and Activities for Centennial High School in Ankeny Robert Scott. The three will go thru a final interview on February 16.  Current Burlington Supt.Pat Coen will retire at the end of June.

Harlan-Lincoln House to host a trip to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum

Mount Pleasant, IA – February 4, 2022 — The Friends of the Harlan-Lincoln House at Iowa Wesleyan University are excited to present Southeast Iowa an opportunity to visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum on March 22, 2022.  

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is the official library and museum of the sixteenth president of the United States. The museum offers multiple exhibits examining Abraham Lincoln’s life, beginning with his boyhood in Kentucky and his shocking assassination in Washington, DC. In addition to the exhibits, there are galleries filled with Lincoln and Civil War artifacts, theaters with Holavision, and, of course, the library where millions of archives containing the history of Abraham Lincoln are stored. 

Hosted by the Friends of the Harlan-Lincoln House as part of the annual Brown Bag Lecture Series, a required $40 registration fee will cover transportation to and from Springfield, breakfast, and admission into the museum. Each registrant will be responsible for their lunch following the visit to the museum.

Jerry Dean McGill

Jerry Dean McGill, 87, of Wapello passed away on Wednesday, February 2nd, 2022 at Washington County Hospital with family at his side.  Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. on Monday, February 7, 2022 at Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral Home, 209 Franklin Street Wapello, IA. Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 6, 2022 at the funeral home.  The family kindly ask those attending the visitation and funeral service to wear a mask due to the pandemic concerns.    A memorial has been established for the Wapello Fire Department and Wapello Ambulance Service. Jerry McGill, was born on January 5, 1935, in Grandview, Iowa, the son of Jesse Dickerson McGill and Faith Lillian (Stinemen) McGill.  He was a 1953 graduate of Wapello High School and attended Southwestern College in Winfield, KS.  On July 3, 1954, he was united in marriage to Frances Moore.  Jerry worked for J.I. Case Company for 32 years and retired in 1997.  In his retirement years, he and Frances traveled, played golf, enjoyed winters in Texas and time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren.  He was a member of Wapello JCs and long-time member of Indian Hills Country Club (Heritage Oaks). Jerry served his community for many years as a volunteer fireman with the Wapello Fire Department. He also coached his boys in Wapello little league and was president of Wapello Booster Club where he accomplished many facility upgrades during his tenure. In his free time, Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf, boating, bowling, gardening and fish fry’s with family and friends

Jerry will be deeply missed by his wife, Frances, son Jerry (Cherri) McGill of Wapello, daughter Kim (Doug) Brown of Wapello, son David (Shelly) McGill of Johnston, IA; grandchildren, Seth (Jade) McGill, Summer (Blake Friis), Chad (Lori) Brown, Bethany (Shay Moore), Cade McGill; Great-Grandchildren, Fiona McGill, Jude McGill, Pheobe McGill, Gabe Friis, Cooper Friis, Parker Friis, Ethan Brown, Zion Moore and Zephyr Moore; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jesse McGill; mother, Faith McGill; brother, Pete McGill, brother, Hal McGill, sister, Marian McGill, and sister, Marilyn McGill.

Girls’ Prep Basketball: Mount Pleasant Rolls’, Mediapolis Falls for the First Time

Mount Pleasant 65, Burlington 15 

Andrea Lopreato scored 35 points, a new record for a junior in a single game for the Panthers, as Mount Pleasant stream rolled Burlington 65-15 last night.

Mount Pleasant led 32-2 at the end of the first quarter and 52-11 at the end of the first half.

The mercy clock was running for entirety of the second half.

Kenna Lamm added 16 points and three rebounds for the Panthers, who improved to 9-10.

Burlington is 0-17.

Mount Pleasant will play at home against Ottumwa next Monday.

Louisa-Muscatine 41, No. 10 (2A) Mediapolis 40 

Kaylee Corbin finished with 20 points as Louisa-Muscatine upset No. 10 (2A) Mediapolis 41-40 last night.

The loss was Mediapolis’ first of the season.

Louisa-Muscatine held a double-digit late into the fourth quarter before a flurry from the Bullettes.

Hallie Mohr had 14 for Mediapolis while Payton Bush added 12.

Mediapolis is now 17-1.

L-M improved to 14-4.

No. 7 (1A) Notre Dame 67, New London 24 

Seventh-ranked Notre Dame received 17 points from Quincy University recruit Megan Harrell as the Nikes dominated New London 67-24.

Abby Korschgen chipped in with 15 points for the Nikes, as well.

Cam Lair and Sophie Malott each had six to lead New London.

The Tigers are now 0-21.

Notre Dame is 19-0.

Winfield-Mount Union 47, Columbus 21 

Winfield-Mount Union won their 17th game of the season, dispatching near rival Columbus 47-21.

Bradie Buffington had a game-high 21 to lead the Lady Wolves, Jobey Malone finished with nine.

Lily Coil had six to pace the Wildcats, who are now 3-17.

Central Lee 42, WACO 31

Alivia Myhre’s 16 points was enough for Central Lee to sink WACO last night 42-31.

Ellah Kissell had 12 in the losing effort to lead the Warriors. Emma Wagler added nine.

Central Lee upped their ledger to 13-7.

WACO fell to 8-12.

Danville 68, Cardinal 31

Makenzie Morris poured in 14 points while Graci Walker had 13 as Danville won again, 68-31 over Cardinal.

Danville is now 10-10.

Cardinal fell to 4-17.
