Burlington Man Arrested with Methamphetamine

The Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of a Burlington man for possession of methamphetamine.

Reportedly around 10:29pm Tuesday, May 16th, a Des Moines County Deputy performed a regular check on a disabled motorcycle in the 500 block of Summer Street. The Deputy observed the man who appeared to be under the influence based on his behavior. After further investigation, 35 year old Gary Lee Swanson of Burlington was found to be in possession of methamphetamine.

He was subsequently arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center.

Gregory Dunbar

Gregory Lee Dunbar, 49, of Newport, TN, formerly of Washington, IA, died Friday, May 12, 2023, at his home. His body has been cremated and a private family graveside service will be held at the Sandy Hook Cemetery with full military honors. A visitation will be held 1:00-7:00 PM, Friday, June 16, 2023, at the Beatty Peterseim Funeral Home in Washington with the family greeting friends from 4:00-7:00 PM.

 

Greg was born October 3, 1973, in Fairfield, Iowa, the son of Jim and Debbie (Pickering) Dunbar. He graduated from the Faith Christian Academy in 1992. Right after graduating he joined the Air Force and served as a hydraulic mechanic on the Boeing RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft in the 38th RS at Offutt Air Force Base. He was honorably discharged after 10 years. Greg was united in marriage to Veronica Magee on September 7, 1996, at Midlands Bible Baptist Church in Bellevue, NE. He enjoyed playing his guitar, singing with family, riding his motorcycle, fixing things, and staying busy. He was always willing to offer a helping hand.

 

Survivors include his wife Veronica, four children: Brianna (Grant) Iske of Lanark, IL, Russell (girlfriend Emily Clary) Dunbar of Hiawatha, IA, Lenora (boyfriend Braulio) Dunbar of Wayland, IA, and Elliot (Nina) Dunbar of Sevierville, TN, parents Jim and Debbie of Pleasant Plain, IA, brother Steven (Marchel) Dunbar of Richland, IA, grandmother Jean Dunbar of Washington, IA, 3 aunts Kay (Les) Whitaker of Pleasant Plain, IA, Jeana (Tonnie) Crile of Washington, IA, Julie Richardson of Washington, IA, uncle Jerry (Pam) Dunbar of Washington, IA, father and mother in law Gerald and Kathy Magee of South Padre Island, TX, brother-in-law Brent (Kim) Magee of Atlantic, IA, Seven nieces, and many cousins and friends.

 

Preceding Greg in death were his infant sister Pamela Jo, grandparents Cloyce and Maxine Pickering, grandfather James E. Dunbar, and two uncles Francis and Lonnie Pickering.

 

The family would like to thank their friends for the outpour of love and care they have received during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers a general memorial has been established.

Beverly Ann Stevens

Beverly Ann Stevens, 85, of Croton, Iowa, passed away at 9:55 a.m. Sunday, May 14, 2023, at her home.

The family will meet with friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington with Rev. Kayla Lange-Carney officiating.

Burial will be held in Embury Cemetery near Donnellson.

A memorial has been established in her memory for Farmington EMT’s.

Isaiah Fenton Commits to Wrestling at the University of Iowa

Iowa Wrestling- Burlington Notre Dame has been producing top talent for the past couple years and Isaiah Fenton adds on to that legacy after announcing his commitment to the Iowa Wrestling program in an Instagram post yesterday.

The Hawkeyes add a very successful wrestler to their roster as Fenton finished last season as the Clas 2A state champion for the 152-pound weight class. His undefeated 39-0 record last season brought his career record to 143-24 including a 90-8 record in the last two seasons.

His 7th place finish at the 2022 state tournament helped the Nikes edge out Osage for their first team title in school history. His championship this year led to the Nikes finishing in 2nd place.

This marks the second Nike to commit to wrestling at the Division I level. CJ Walrath, a two-time state champion, committed to Northern Iowa last summer.

Scam Alert for the Public

The public should be aware of a new scam going around that is being sent to home addresses. This scam appears to be from the Home Services Department and has a message that attempts to get the victim to send moneu through a check due to their “home warranty” being overdue. However, this is a SCAM confirmed by the Iowa County Recorders Association and Iowa Land Records.

If you receive a letter like this; do not pay, do not call, do not go to the website, do not deposit voucher/check, do not return any mail requests.

High School Track and Field

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will compete in 8 events at the state track meet and the girls’ team will be in 5 events.

The Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team will be competing in 2 events with the boys’ team participating in 9 events.

The WACO and New London boys’ teams will be competing in 7 events.

The Danville boys’ team will be in 7 events with two runners in the 3200 meter run. The girls’ team will be participating in 5 events.

The Van Buren County boys team will compete in 5 events.

Thomas Eschman will run the 100 meter dash and compete in the long jump for Central Lee.

The state track meet will begin competition tomorrow, May 18th, and run through the 20th. KILJ will be bringing live results throughout those days for our local teams.

High School Soccer

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will host Maquoketa in the Regional Qualifier on May 19th.

The Danville boys’ teams face off against West Liberty in the second round of the postseason on May 22nd.

The Central Lee boys’ team will travel to take on Pella Christian on May 22nd for the second round of the postseason.

The Central Lee girls team will compete in the Class 1A Region 3 contest against Mid-Prairie tonight.

For girls’ soccer, Washington will host Mediapolis at 5:30 pm tomorrow. Burlington Notre Dame will host Clinton on May 19th at 7 pm. The bottom half of the Class 2A Region 5 bracket will be a Southeast Conference battle with Fort Madison squaring off with Keokuk in round one on May 19th at 7 pm.

High School Golf

The Mt. Pleasant girls team will compete in their Regional meet today at Xavier.

The boys teams of New London and Winfield-Mt. Union competed in the District meet yesterday with Hillcrest Academy and Wapello each qualifying as a team. Mason Shelledy of New London earned a trip to state as an individual qualifier after finishing as a runner-up for the field with a score of 76. Winfield-Mt. Union shot a 369 as a team as the Wolves were led by Carter Loyd’s third place performance with a score of 78. Jake Edwards was 2nd on the team with a score of 94. The state tournament will start on May 22nd with Shelledy playing at Ames Golf and Country Club.

The girls teams of New London and Winfield-Mt. Union will participate in the Regional final hosted by Wapello today.

Olivia Hines of Mediapolis will compete at Williamsburg for the Region 4 final today.

High School Baseball

Mt. Pleasant will host Mediapolis tomorrow, May 18th, at 7 pm.

Southeast Iowa Playbook

Mt. Pleasant will be our highlight school for this week’s show at 6 pm tonight as we focus on girls’ track and field.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The NAIA National Championship meet will take place on May 24th for outdoor track and field.
