Iowa Wesleyan would jump on Florida National University early scoring four runs in the bottom of the first and stay on top winning 9-5. David Amaya doubled home the first run for the Tigers, it was also the first of four doubles that scored runs. Rylee Rankin, Vicente, and Froymer Ortega all notched an RBI double. Cauy Massner picked up the win on the mound.

Unfortunately, the Tigers season would end as Fisher College put up five runs in the bottom of the 9th to force extra innings where they would eventually win 11-10 after 11 innings. Carlos Vicente picked up a double and two RBIs. Derek Marrufo and Philip Guerrero each tallied two RBIs in the contest. Iowa Wesleyan finished with a 22-22 record and 3rd in the CAC.

The Tigers outdoor track and field teams competed at the Fighting Scots Invitational at Monmouth College over the weekend and the Tigers saw two first place finishers. Affects of Sunday Night Storms

So far there have been no reports that any tornadoes were spotted Sunday in Henry County but the high winds, hail and heavy rainfall were enough to cause alarm.  A severe thunderstorm warning went out about 6:30 pm followed by the high winds that brought what looked like a sandstorm. Temps dropped and the skies became dark as the winds reached reported speeds of 60 plus miles per hour. The rain finally arrived and continued thru the night. Totals varied. So far this morning the KILJ report is .52 inches Mount Pleasant Utilities had to dispatch crews to deal with a widespread power outage. Some parts of town maintained power thru out the storm.  Other areas lost electricity as soon as the winds became severe and as of 8:30 pm were still without.  There were also power outages reported in the rural areas. KILJ is checking in with electric providers and Mount Pleasant Public Works Department today for other reportable damages.

As far as damage, the front window of the HyVee convenience store behind the check out area blew out causing damage inside and outside the store. No injuries were reported. And the store opened as usual this morning. Semis had a hard time staying upright and of course limbs and trees came down.

Just after 8 pm there was a report of a motor vehicle crash at the corner of  South Main and Warren  in Mount Pleasant involving a Arkansas Vortex storm chaser vehicle and a truck. It looks like the storm chaser vehicle was headed south on Main when the driver of the truck pulled in to the path of the storm chaser vehicle. Just before 9 pm the Mount Pleasant Fire Department and other responders were called out headed north on Grand Avenue.  We are checking in with fire and law enforcement officials for more details.

The Tiger Baseball Season Ends a Game Short of the Conference Championship

Iowa Wesleyan- The Iowa Wesleyan baseball team ended up one run short of the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) championship but finished the season 22-22 and third in the CAC after falling to Fisher College 11-10 after 11 innings.

The #4 seed Tigers started the CAC tournament against the #1 seed Georgia Gwinnet College on Saturday. The Grizzlies proved why they are ranked 5th in the NAIA after taking down the Tigers 14-0 after 7 innings. Carlos Vicente led the team with two hits in the game. The Grizzlies defeated Fisher College in the second round 19-1 after 7 innings to earn a chance to play in the championship game.

In this double elimination tournament, the Tigers had to win two more games to make it to the championship game. The first stop on this journey was against Florida National University. After giving up one run in the top of the 1st, the Tigers put up four runs in the bottom of the 1st starting with a David Amaya double. Froymer Ortega picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly and Rylee Rankin added his own RBI double. The Tigers would keep up the offensive dominance and win 9-5. Ortega would pick up another RBI; Holvin Catala and Vicente would each tally an RBI as Cauy Massner got the win striking out six.

Iowa Wesleyan would then face off against the #2 seed Fisher College. The game was knotted at four heading into the 5th inning, before the Tigers would score six runs between the 5th and 6th innings. Vicente added another two RBIs to his total along with Marrufo and Guerrero. Unfortunately, the Tigers would give up the 10-5 lead in the bottom of the 9th as the game was now destined for extra innings. Iowa Wesleyan would strand a runner on third base in the top of the 11th and a single by the Falcons Ivanuel Hernandez would walk it off for an 11-10 finale.

The championship game between Georgia Gwinnett and Fisher will be played tomorrow at noon. If the Falcons win, then another game will be played 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

Saturday night at about 7:30 Mount Pleasant police were called to investigate a motor vehicle crash involving a motorcycle at the intersection of South Walnut and East Washington Streets.
