SEIBA to Host Build My Future Event for Area 7th Graders

The Southeast Iowa Builders’ Association (SEIBA) will host Build My Future at the Des Moines County Fairgrounds at Southeastern Community College on Friday, May 5.

Over 600 area 7th graders will participate in hands-on demos and activities hosted by local businesses in four main exhibit areas: Interior Construction, Exterior Construction, Tool Showcase and Equipment Showcase.

Attending schools include West Burlington, Ft. Madison, Burlington, New London, Holy Trinity, Notre Dame and Danville.

Event organizer Michelle Brown says Build My Future is mutually important for both local students and businesses.

“The students can learn how cool it can be to do a hands-on job,” said Brown.

Businesses benefit not only from exposure but as an investment in the workforce of the next generation.

“A lot of times, when students leave the area for schooling or training, they may not be back,” Brown continued. “This will help students learn what types of jobs are in our area as well as the skills needed for those jobs.”

This event is sponsored by Altorfer, Brockway Mechanical & Roofing, Cessford Construction Company, Frank Millard and Company, Graystone Construction, Greater Burlington Partnership, Ideal Ready Mix, L&W Quarries, JJD Contracting Company, Mohrfeld Electric, SG Construction, Seither & Cherry Company, United Rentals, Brueck Construction, White Cap, Cabinetion, Fye Excavating, Carl A. Nelson & Company, Huffman’s Welding & Machine, Jones Contracting Corporation, and Southeastern Community College.

SEIBA was founded in 1916 and is headquartered in Burlington. Its mission is to continually improve the capabilities and capacities of the construction industry through education, training, and teamwork.

Iowa Wesleyan- The Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) released their final weekly honors for the softball season today and Aspyn Harrison earned CAC Hitter of the Week after a stellar 8-game stretch.

Harrison has been the best hitter for the Tigers this season as she slashed a 0.430 batting average, a 0.448 on-base percentage, and a 0.547 slugging percentage. Harrison collected two doubles, six RBIs, five runs, and two stolen bases during the week.

Harrison led the team in doubles and was second on the team in RBIs. She was also the ace for the Tigers, finishing the season with a team leading 9 wins and 3.82 ERA for the season in 124 and 1/3 innings of work. Her pitching and hitting helped the Tigers end the season on a 6-game win streak and a 19-24 overall record, which is a 12-game improvement from last year.
