City Announcement Regarding Spring Clean-up

The City of Mount Pleasant will hold annual Spring Clean Up during the week of April 24, 2023– April 29, 2023. Spring Clean Up is a one-week opportunity for residents of Mount Pleasant to rid your home of those unusual or large items that are too big to fit into a garbage bag for your
regular garbage collection day. The collection work is done by WEMIGA WASTE. Spring Clean Up will be picked up on your normal garbage day. Please do not place items curbside until the week before Spring Clean Up.

WHAT CANNOT AND WILL NOT BE PICKED UP:
• Tires, Waste Oil, Batteries, Roof Shingles, Ashes
• Liquids, such as Anti-freeze, Household Chemicals and Wet Paint
• Construction materials of any kind such as drywall, wood, etc.
• Televisions and Computer Monitors
• Yard Waste
• Appliances

THINGS THEY WATCH FOR:
Leave the lids off your paint cans. If you have old paint cans and the paint is dry, we can take them. We cannot take wet paint of any kind.
We can take all kinds of carpet. Carpet must be tightly rolled and tied to be collected.

GARBAGE STICKERS:
Please adhere stickers no earlier than the morning of your pickup date to ensure scavengers don’t take the adhered to item. Pile size limited to equivalent to unit 6′ wide x 8′ long x 4′ tall, excludes separated metal pile. You are required to use a minimum of eight stickers for your entire pile. Depending on the pile size it is recommended you put 8-12 stickers on your pile.

The Men’s Golf Schedule has been Released for Iowa Wesleyan

Mt. Pleasant, IA- The men’s golf team for Iowa Wesleyan  has released their upcoming spring schedule and here’s what the Tigers have in front of them.

The Jim Wetherbee Invitational in Galesburg, Illinois will be the season opener on March 25th and 26th. Then the Tigers will have two home competitions with the Purple Cup taking place on March 27th and the IW Tiger Classic occurring on March 28th.

The Tigers will have three competitions in April as they travel to Quincy, Illinois for the Wildcat Classic on April 2nd and 3rd. April 10th the Tigers bound to Burlington for the SCC Invitational and on April 18th and 19th they travel to Iowa city for the Verhille Invitational. The season concludes on May 1st and 2nd at the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Championships in San Antonio, Texas.

During the fall, the men’s best finish was at the Monmouth Invite as they finished 2nd overall. They were led by Trace White and Brevin Wilson, who both placed in the top 10 at the 2022 CAC Championship meet last year, placing 6th and 8th, respectively. White was also named to the All-Tournament team last fall at the Simpson Fall Invitational.

Kurt Moon will be at the helm for the team in his 14th season coaching the Iowa Wesleyan golf teams.

Iowa Wesleyan Wrestling: Adaugo Nwachukwu is a Prominent Name in Women’s Wrestling

Mt. Pleasant, IA- A 29-hour, 1,968.5 mile, divide separates Adaugo Nwachukwu from her home, but the sensational wrestler for Iowa Wesleyan has certainly made Mt. Pleasant feel like home. In the short two years that Nwachukwu has been a Tiger, she has written the school record book—you read that right as the program is only three years old—and set the standard for future Tiger wrestlers. Here’s a list of her achievements since donning the Purple and White.

In her freshman year, Nwachukwu showed her metal by rising to the rank of #1 wrestler in the 136-pound division for the NAIA. She proved to be dominant in the Heart of America Conference tournament as she walked away with the championship and was named to the 1st-Team All-Conference list as she and Mia Palumbo were the first to do so in school history. Nwachukwu would end the season with a 22-1 season after going 5-0 at the NAIA National Championship culminating in a 13-3 tech fall in the championship bout to secure Iowa Wesleyan’s first National Champion for their wrestling program and the first National Champion for Iowa Wesleyan since rejoining the NAIA.

This momentum propelled her into making the world team for USA Wrestling as she went 5-0 in the USA Wrestling Women’s Nationals including a hard fought final match where she would come back from behind and win 2 to 1. Traveling to Sofia, Bulgaria, Nwachukwu would take home the bronze medal in the Women’s Freestyle in the 62KG division. She defeated Bermet Nuridin Kyzy by a 10-0 decision.

Having collected a National Championship and a bronze medal in her freshman year, there was a lot to expect from the sophomore and she did not disappoint. Coming in as the #1 wrestler in the 136-pound weight class, Nwachukwu would go on to an have an undefeated regular season leading her to be the favorite heading into the Heart of America Championships. She would be awarded with two byes before dominating her competition that ended in her pinning #14 Jade Martin in 1 minute 8 seconds to walk away with her second Heart of America title. All that was left to do was defend her National Championship from a year before. Nwachukwu would breeze through day one, and pin #4 Leidaly Rivera in the semifinals leading to a championship matchup with #7 Mea Mohler. Mohler would attack quick a score an early take down taking a 2-0 lead on the defending champion. That would be it for the challenger as Nwachukwu would score the next 15 points to score a tech fall and become the first two-time National Champion in school history. She also earned All-American honors for the second consecutive year as she ended the year undefeated.

“She[Adaugo Nwachukwu] is super fun to watch,” said Head Coach Jake Kadel. “I mean, I think she’s probably one of if not the best wrestler in college wrestling in right now for women. You know she is blown everybody out of the water, she scores a lot of points, she is fun to watch, she competes hard.”

With only one loss in her collegiate career, two conference titles, two All-American honors, a bronze medal, and two National Championships it is hard to argue with Coach Kadel’s assertion that she is fun to watch.

Sisters Will Co-Coordinate Fair Queen Contest

After 6 years as the Henry County Fair Queen contest coordinator, Summer Miller is turning over her duties.  Summer has moved away from the area but will leave the job to three qualified people….former Iowa State Fair Queen Kelsey Smith DeWitt, Kirsten Smith and Kenna Smith.  All three have been contestants in the local contest and have remained active in supporting the program.  The sisters will take over immediately ahead of the 2023 Henry County Fair and Queen contest.

James Harlan Chapter DAR Celebrates 100 Years

On Thursday, March 24, 1923, a group of women led by Ella Rosemond Mackin gathered in Mt. Pleasant to form the James Harlan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).  Current members of the James Harlan Chapter of DAR invite the community to help commemorate it’s first 100 years.  The celebration will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Ashford Park Clubhouse, 1801 Ashford Avenue, Mt. Pleasant.  The event is free and open to the public.

The celebration will kick off with an open house at 1 p.m.  A program will begin at 1:30.  The Women in American History Award will honor two local women.  Following the awards, Iowa author Cheryl Mullenbach will present on “Mischievous Women of the Progressive Era”.  Cathy Helman, James Harlan DAR member from Salem will add information about local “mischievous” women.

In addition to the anniversary celebration, the chapter is marking it’s anniversary in other ways.  Visitors to the Mt. Pleasant Public Library or the lower level of the Henry County Courthouse can view displays commemorating the James Harlan Chapter’s milestone.  James Harlan Chapter member Becky Wright made the patriotic quilt on display at the library.  Vice Regent Charlene Seggerman assembled items illustrating DAR’s goals and activities to display in the courthouse.

The Daughters of the American Revolution, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization. Each of the women who belong to the DAR can document their ancestry back to at least one patriot who played a role helping to win independence during the Revolutionary War.  The organization is dedicated to three main goals: promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children.

According to James Harlan Chapter Regent Gayle Olson, there are currently 59 members in the local chapter who work to accomplish these goals through a combination of committee work, recognizing community members and continuously learning.  “We are an involved group with many activities and partners.  Each month, we work on a specific service area.  If you have an interest in history, education or patriotism, we always have projects in progress.”

Vera Mae McCabe

Vera Mae McCabe, 80, of Nashville, Tennessee and formerly of Fairfield passed away on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at her daughter’s home in Tennessee, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Pastor David Forrester officiating.  Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery rural Wayland.  The family will receive friends from 9:30 until service time on Saturday at the Murphy Funeral Home.  A memorial has been established in her memory.

The boys’ will be heading to Central College on Friday to compete in an indoor meet with the girls’ competing on Saturday at Central College.

High School Soccer

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ soccer season will begin on March 28th against Mediapolis on the road.

WACO’s boy soccer team will start their season at home against Fairfield on March 30th.

The Central Lee boys’ soccer team will take on Keokuk on March 27th as the Hawks start their season on the road.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The Tiger baseball team’s home opening doubleheader against Graceland University has been postponed to tomorrow, March 15th, with game one at 1 pm. KILJ will be on the call with pregame at 12:45 pm.

The Tiger softball team had two players earn Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Player of the Week honors. Jordan Lantz took home Hitter of the Week as she went 8 for 10 in a four game stretch. Lantz also added 3 RBIs, a walk, and a run scored to her stat line. Aspyn Harrison was named Pitcher of the Week as she picked up a record of a 3-1 over the 4-game stretch. Harrison pitched a complete game in all of her wins totaling 20 strikeouts and allowing only 4 earned runs on 13 hits. This is the first CAC award of both of their careers. The Tigers will travel to take on Harris-Stowe State University on Saturday, March 18th, at 1 pm.
