Viking Football Adds Simeon Reichenbach to the Upcoming Roster

WACO High School- Simeon Reichenbach has officially signed with Grand View University to continue playing football at the college level. Reichenbach has helped lead the team to a 23-2 record over the past two seasons as the Warriors finished in 2nd place in last year’s 8-man football state tournament.

Over the past two seasons, Reichenbach has rushed for 2,989 yards and 56 touchdowns, while also catching 35 passes for 578 yards and 6 touchdowns. As the starting kicker, he also went 19 of 26 for field goals with a long of 49. In their 29-21 win over Newell-Fonda to make it to the state championship, Reichenbach rushed for 90 yards and 2 touchdowns on his way to game MVP. He talked about why he picked Grand View University after his signing,

“When I visited there it felt right. I had a little click, so that’s what felt good.”

He will be joining a Vikings squad that went 13-1 making it to the semifinals of the NAIA Playoffs.

2023 KILJ Bracket Challenge

Bracket Challenge- It’s that time of the year for NCAA Men’s basketball, March Madness. It also means that KILJ is again hosting the Bracket Challenge and thanks to the Press Box and Wiley’s Interior Furnishing and Designs we will be giving out prizes for both 1st and 2nd place. If you would like to participate follow the steps below.

  1. Follow this link and it will take you to the bracket: 2023 KILJ Bracket Challenge Sign Up
  2. Once you click on the link it will take you to “2023 KILJ Challenge” and ask you to “Create a New Bracket.” At this point you will either sign into your ESPN account or create an ESPN account.
  3. After you sign in or create an account, you can now join the group and will have one chance to fill out a bracket. Brackets will not be available to fill out until March 12th, but you can still join the group and ask for an e-mail to remind you to fill out the bracket before March 16th.
  4. Once you fill out your bracket, submit it and make sure to email sports@kilj.com what the name of your bracket is and your phone number so we can contact you if you win a prize!

Henry County Public Health Offers Shingles Vaccine

Henry County Public Health Stresses Importance of Shingles Vaccination:

Up to 90 Percent Effective in Preventing Virus

 Anyone who has had chickenpox – about 99 percent of Americans born in or before 1980 – is at risk for shingles. Shingles is a viral infection that can cause a painful, blistering rash, as well as long-lasting nerve pain and other severe complications. The good news is, shingles is avoidable, which is why Henry County Public Health and the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services are encouraging Iowans to not delay being vaccinated.

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox. The virus stays dormant in a person’s body after recovering from chickenpox and can reactivate later as shingles, causing a painful rash on the face or body, as well as other long-term effects.

“The likelihood of getting shingles increases as you get older, along with severe complications like postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) – severe pain in the areas where the shingle rash was, even after the rash clears up,” said Robin Poole, Immunization Coordinator. “Being vaccinated for shingles protects against the short- and long-term effects of the virus.”

Who Should Be Vaccinated 

CDC recommends two doses of shingles vaccine (Shingrix) separated by 2 to 6 months for adults 50 years of age and older. Henry County Public Health offers the shingles vaccine during regular immunization clinics: Tuesdays 9-11am, Wednesdays and Thursdays 1-4pm, and the 1st and 3rd Thursday 1-6pm. If you have questions about the Shingrix vaccine, talk with your healthcare provider to find out if the vaccine is right for you.

High School Basketball
The Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team will take on North Linn tomorrow at 6:45 pm. KILJ will be on the call with pregame at 6:30 pm. Head Coach Mendy McCreight talked about how excited she is to go back to Des Moines.
New London earned the 8th seed and will go against the #1 seed Grand View Christian on March 6th at 10:30 am.
All-Conference Honors
The Southeast Conference (SEC) announced conference honors for basketball, and wrestling and here is how Mt. Pleasant fared for awards.
For boys’ basketball, Payton Hagans and Aaiden Ashton earned All-Conference 1st Team honors, as Hagans averaged 20.7 points per game and Ashton cashed in 14.5 points per game. Owen Vansickel was recognized as 2nd Team All-Conference and Carter Amos and Nate Stroud both took home All-Conference Honorable Mentions. Tim Cam earned Academic All-Conference honors.
For girls’ basketball, Andrea Lopreato capped off her high school career as Co-Conference Player of the Year, All-Conference 1st Team, and Academic All-Conference Honors after averaging a double-double on the year and scoring 1,416 points in her career. Tristan Shull was also named to the All-Conference 1st Team and the Academic All-Conference Team after averaging 11.9 points per game. Kate Schimmelpfennig and Andi Scott were recognized as All-Conference Honorable Mentions and Academic All-Conference. Juliana Burns, Hailey Parrott, and Mackenzie Musselman were all named to the Academic All-Conference roster.
Ella McNamee headlined the conference honors for the Panthers as she was named to the All-Conference 1st Team after qualifying for the first sanctioned girls’ wrestling state tournament. Alexis Wagner, Natalie Parrott, Zenlynn Lee, and Natalie Albright were all named to the All-Conference 1st Team. Jayden Housh earned All-Conference 2nd Team honors and along with McNamee was named to the Academic All-Conference roster.
For boys’ wrestling, Bowen Davis and Franklin Tousignant were named to the 2nd Team All-Conference and Jamal Dodson earned Academic All-Conference honors.
Iowa Wesleyan Athletics
The women’s basketball team will be participating in the NAIA National Tournament beginning on March 7th. The Tigers will find out who and where they play at 6 pm on March 2nd.
The 23rd-ranked men’s team qualified for the National Tournament beginning on March 7th. The Tigers will find out who and where they play on March 2nd at 7 pm.
The women’s wrestling team will be competing in the 2023 NAIA Women’s Wrestling National Championship which will take place on March 10th.
The men’s wrestling team will have Lane Scorpil represent the Tigers at the NAIA Men’s Wrestling National Championship meet on March 3rd.
The Tigers Indoor Track and Field teams will be competing in the NAIA Indoor Track and Field national championship meet on March 2nd.
The Tiger baseball team will have a doubleheader against Southeastern University on March 3rd with game one at 3 pm.
The Tiger softball team will face off against Stephens College this afternoon in a doubleheader with game one at 1 pm.

Theresa K. Hass, 94, of Burlington passed away on Friday, February 24, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Klein Center in West Burlington.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 3, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church in Burlington

with The Very Reverend Father Marty Goetz as celebrant.  Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, in Burlington.

Memorials may be directed to the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in her memory.
