Marjorie Witte

Majorie H Witte passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 18th at the Hiawatha Care Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.    Born November 1, 1932, she was the daughter of William and Alice Eibes of Sperry, Iowa.

Marjorie loved sports and going to basketball and volleyball games at Mediapolis with her friends, Dorothy and Hartzell Hillyard.  She especially loved watching her great grandsons sporting events in Cedar Rapids.  While in high school, she often talked about her time as a cheerleader and basketball player.  She was proud that her team got to go to the State Tournament in Des Moines.  Even though they didn’t win, she commented that it was the furthest away she had been from home at that time.

Marjorie married Lemoyne (Bear) Witte in 1952.  They made their home with his parents for several years.  At that time, Marjorie worked as school secretary for the Mediapolis School district.  After moving to the (Blue Star) family farm, she made sure everyone knew that she didn’t care to operate farm machinery. Instead, she had a very large garden of tomatoes, green beans and an acre of sweet corn. She would make sure to can and freeze enough to share with family and friends.

In 1960, Marjorie began a long career as plant personnel secretary at the then new United States Gypsum Company. and remained working there until retiring.   She and Lemoyne liked to travel, making several trips to Europe, Central and South America, Africa, and across the USA, including Alaska and Hawaii. However, she would often say her favorite times were at home with her family.   Some of her other hobbies included needlework, collecting cut glass, Hummels, and of course, Beanie Babies!  She was a member of T.T.T.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lemoyne, granddaughter, Stephanie Black-Wheatley, brothers; Francis, Westley, and Marvin Eibes, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law.

She is survived by her daughter, Sherry Black, great-grandsons, Spencer and Roman Wheatley, her brother, Ronald Eibes of Burlington, and sister, Bonnie Wixon of Eldon, Missouri, along with many nieces and nephews.

According to Majorie’s wishes, a visitation will be held at the Snyder and Hollenbaugh Funeral Home in Mediapolis, Iowa on Friday, February 24th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.  A graveside service will be held at the Kossuth Cemetery at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 25, 2023.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.

Sports, February 21st

High School Basketball

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team were tested in another close game, but this time the Panthers came out victorious 40-38 over Fort Madison. Coach Eric Rawson talked about how important it was for his team to come out with a win of this caliber. The game was close from the start as Aaiden Ashton missed most of the first half due to foul trouble and without Payton Hagans, it was up to Owen Vansickel to lead the team. Vansickel did just that as he led the team with 16 points and with a 37-31 lead heading into the 4th quarter it appeared that the Panthers had it in the bag. Alas, the Bloodhounds would allow the Panthers to score 3 points in the fourth quarter and make it a one-point game with less than a minute to go. The Panther defense would do its job and shut out the Bloodhounds to come out with the win to move on and play Solon in the next round of the District tournament. Coach Rawson talked about the upcoming matchup on Thursday at 7 pm.

The Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team will take on North Mahaska tomorrow, February 22nd, and the boys’ team will take on New London tonight, February 21st. Both games will be covered by KILJ with pregame at 6:45 pm.

High School Bowling

The state championship will be running through the 22nd.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The women’s basketball team will take on Bacone College on February 24th at 11:30 am to start the conference tournament. Kyla Moore was awarded the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Player of the Week after helping the Tigers go 2-0 last week. Moore averaged 23 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.5 steals per contest. She also nailed 18 of 20 free throws in the two games. This is her second time winning the award.

The 23rd-ranked men’s team will enter the Continental Athletic Conference tournament as 2nd overall seed and take on Haskell Indian Nations on February 24th at 8:15 pm.

The men’s wrestling team will have Lane Scorpil represent the Tigers at the NAIA Men’s Wrestling National Championship meet on March 3rd.

The women’s wrestling team will start the 2023 Heart of America Conference Championship on February 25th.

This Day in Sports History

1931 – Chicago White Sox & NY Giants play 1st exhibition night game.

1979 – Two Iowa girls high school basketball teams played 4 scoreless quarters and the final was 4-2 after four overtime periods.

2016 – 58th Daytona 500: Denny Hamlin wins closest finish in race history – by just 0.01 of a second.

Lane Scorpil to Wrestle at the NAIA National Championship Meet

Mt. Pleasant, IA- Lane Scorpil, the freshman from Columbus Junction, will be heading to the NAIA Men’s Wrestling National Championship meet after a 2nd place finish in the Heart of America Conference Championships.

In the 125-pound weight class, Scorpil would take down Riece Graham of Graceland University by fall to move into the quarterfinals. Scorpil would come away with another pin against Brayden Bradley of Missouri Valley College to challenge Colton King of Central Methodist University in the semifinals. In a thriller, Scorpil would walk away with the win in a 6-5 decision to battle in the championship match. However, Esco Walker of Grand View University would win by tech fall taking 1st place with Scorpil claiming 2nd place. That 2nd place finish meant Scorpil had qualified for the National Championship.

The NAIA Men’s Wrestling National Championship meet will start on March 3rd and finish up on March 4th in Wichita, Kansas.

Kyla Moore’s Big Week Nabs Her Conference Player of the Week

Mt. Pleasant, IA- In the final edition of this basketball season’s Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Player of the Week Honors, Kyla Moore secured her second CAC award.

The Tigers went 2-0 this past week against Baptist Bible College and Trinity Christian College. A big reason for that was Moore’s 25 points against the Patriots and her netting 21 points against the Trolls. She averaged 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals, 3 three-pointers, and 3 assists over the two contests. Even better was her free throw shooting as she went 18 of 20 from the charity stripe.

Moore and the first Tiger team to win 20-games since the 2015-2016 season will be looking to win the CAC tournament in back-to-back seasons with the first game scheduled for February 24th against Bacone College.
