Two Vehicle Collision

Tuesday Mount Pleasant Police investigated a two vehicle collision at the entrance to Hy-Vee. Jean Francy of Mount Pleasant was stopped in her vehicle trying to exit the store’s drive.  She pulled out onto East Washington Street but failed to see a second vehicle driven by Mike Schierbrock of West Point that was eastbound in the outside lane of Washington Street.  The Schierbrock vehicle struck Francy’s on the driver side front corner and tire area. No injuries were reported.

Daily Jail Count

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Peggy Hays

Peggy Hays, 70, of Yarmouth, was ushered into her eternal inheritance on Monday, January 23, 2023.    She now stands in the radiance of His glory.   Visitation for Peggy will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Sharon Reformed Presbyterian Church.   Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2023, at the church.  Burial will be in the Sharon Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery. Peggy Ann Hays was born on June 20, 1952 in Carroll, Iowa the daughter of John Milford and Margaret Joan (Kline) Hays.  Peggy was a 1970 graduate of Mediapolis High School and received her Master’s Degree from the University of Northern Iowa.  Peggy was a 6th grade teacher at Central Middle School in Muscatine for 32 years.  She was a member of Sharon Reformed Presbyterian Church since she was 12 years old and a past member of T.T.T. She enjoyed crafting, making cards, traveling worldwide, baking, cooking, her cabin on the river in Muscatine and boating.

Peggy will be deeply missed by her siblings, John Hays of Washington, Iowa, Kathy (Barry) Heilman of Yarmouth, Iowa and Becky Hays of San Diego, California; step-sister, Toni Turner of Burlington; uncle Bob (Debi) Hays of Council Bluffs, Iowa; cousins, Denny (Mary) Paup of Glidden, Iowa and Doug (Debbie) Paup of Davenport, Iowa; nieces, Liz (Josh) Nielsen of West Des Moines, Iowa and Chelsea (James) Hartman of Indianola, Iowa and great nieces and nephews.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; uncles and aunts.

Cheryl Lynn Borders

Cheryl Lynn Borders, 69, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Monday, January 23, 2023 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, surrounded by her children.

The funeral service for Cheryl will be 10:30 AM on Friday, January 27 at the First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant. The Rev. David H. Bracht-Wagner, Senior Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Friends may call from 12 Noon-8PM on Thursday at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 5-7 PM on Thursday.

Mrs. Borders, the former Cheryl Lynn Schroeder, was born November 5, 1953 in Mt. Pleasant. She was the daughter of George Washington and Rozella June (Frost) Schroeder. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1972. On May 6, 1973 at the First United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant, Cheryl was united in marriage to Roger “Fuzzy” Borders. Mr. Borders died Wednesday, September 28, 2005 in Mt. Pleasant.

After graduation, Cheryl worked at E.G. Staats Mfg. until 1975. She then started a long career in retail sales, first at the Kid Kloset & Fashion Boutique and then at Hutch’s Sporting Goods & Sport Trends. In 1998, she began a new career with the state of Iowa, working at the Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility. She retired on December 13, 2019.

Cheryl was a keen shopper. She enjoyed many shopping and dining adventures with her family and especially with her mother on Fridays. She enjoyed other travels and camping adventures. She and her family spent a whole day at the Iowa State Fair each year for some 24 years. Above all, Cheryl faithfully attended all of her grandchildren’s activities and was very adept at being their #1 fan.

Those thankful for sharing in Cheryl’s life include her 3 children – Mike (Sara) Borders, Mathew Borders and Jennifer (Jason) Hunold, all of Mt. Pleasant; her mother, Mrs. Rozella Schroeder of Mt. Pleasant; her siblings – Dennis (Marilyn) Schroeder of Salem, Sheila (Oscar Simonson) Takai of Burlington and Kathy (Joe) Rauenbuehler of Mt. Pleasant and her 6 grandchildren – Ryan, Megan, Logan & Dawson Borders and Emily and Nolan Hunold.

Her father and husband precede in death.

Washington Mayor Charged with Sexual Abuse

Washington, Iowa mayor, Jaron Rosien, turned himself in to Washington County Law Enforcement authorities on Tuesday. He is charged with Sexual Abuse in the  3rd Degree, a Class C Felony. January 11 a man filed a report with the Washington Police Department stating he was the victim of unwanted and inappropriate touching by Rosein on the night of January 7th at a bar owned by Rosien. The case was immediately turned over to the Iowa DCI. The investigation was conducted by agents with the Major Crime Unit of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation; assisted by the Office of the Washington County Attorney and the Office of the Iowa Attorney General.

Show Choir Competition Season Begins

Mount Pleasant High School Show Choir, InMotion, will head for Davenport North for the Big Dance Invitational on Saturday, January 28.  InMotion will perform at 12:15 pm. MP will be among 11 show choirs performing Saturday.  The names of three of the judges may sound familiar….Bob and Jill Anderson and Allen Chapman.  Mr. Chapman directed show choir at Ft. Madison High School and Holy Trinity Catholic School.  Bob Anderson was a vocal director at MPCHS and instrumental in establishing the modern area of show choir at Mount Pleasant. February 4 Mount Pleasant will host the 29th Annual InMotion Invitational at the High School beginning at 8 am with the Middle School choirs. Those awards will be at 12:25 pm.  The High School performances begin at 1 pm with.  Following the final afternoon performance at 5:45 pm, the Mount Pleasant Middle School show choir, Chain Reaction will perform at 6:15 pm and the daytime awards will be announced at 6:40 pm.  The evening finals begin at 7:45 pm.  The day will wrap up with the InMotion performance at 10:45 and then the final awards at 11:15 pm.

Admission is $10. Concessions will be available on site. 18 show choirs are expected to participate.
