Wellbeing Workshop Series Comes to Southeast Iowa

Wellbeing isn’t something to achieve and check off a bucket list. Instead, it’s an ongoing journey that varies with each person. Iowans can find their own way in a new program from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

“What About Me? My Wellbeing” is a four-week introductory, research-based program that covers taking time for oneself, relationships, finances and physical health. Agencies, businesses, and individuals interested in promoting overall wellness can attend one of the following offerings in Southeast Iowa free of charge:

  • Mondays, February 6, 13, 20, & 27 at the Henry County Extension Office (127 N Main Street, Mt. Pleasant)
  • Mondays, March 6, 13, 20, & 27 at the Des Moines County Extension Office (1700 W Mt. Pleasant Street, West Burlington)
  • Mondays, April 3, 10, 17, & 24 at the Lee County Health Department (#3 John Bennett Dr, Fort Madison)
  • Mondays, May 1, 8, 15, & 22 at the Louisa County Extension Office (317 Van Buren, Wapello)

Each workshop runs from 12:00pm-1:00pm, with lunch served at 11:30am.

“Wellbeing is not an end, it’s a journey. Your needs will fluctuate depending on where you are in your life. This program can be applied at any point,” said Dawn Dunnegan, a family wellbeing specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach.

“It’s all about taking time out of your busy schedule to reflect on the lifestyle choices you’re making to meet your own goals for your relationships and your financial and physical health. This is not about us telling you what you should be doing. It’s about you figuring out what you should be doing based on your own individual goals,” Dunnegan said.

“You’re going to learn some new information, but what’s more important is that the program allows you to take time to focus on you,” added Kelly Waters, Marketing Program Coordinator for Henry & Des Moines Counties.

“After completing the program, you’ll have the tools to keep working on your own wellbeing,” Waters said.

Online registration and additional information are available at https://extension.iastate.edu/humansciences/wellbeing. For more information about the “What About Me? My Wellbeing” offerings in Southeast Iowa, contact Dawn Dunnegan at dunnegan@iastate.edu.

Conservation Department Improvements

As the new year began Henry County residents had a chance to see the changes made to the interior of the Henry County Nature Center located at Oakland Mills.  The facelift included construction of a huge tree for kids to climb in and a tunnel where the indoor fish pond used to be.  Now it’s time to re-do the pond outside at the entrance to the Nature Center.  Some other improvements coming before the summer season include re-roofing all the shelter houses in the parks and removing the pit toilets at Gibson Park and Mudcreek.  Forty-five new fire rings for the camping areas will be purchased thru Iowa Prison Industries for $13,000 and a wash bay for equipment will be constructed away from the front of the shop. An assessment of the various parks that make up the Henry County Conservation district is underway so that planning can be done for future improvements.
