Shae Matthew McCabe, 43, of Fairfield passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 from injuries sustained in an accident.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at 3:00 pm at the Cider House in Fairfield,  with a meal to follow.  A memorial fund for Shae’s children has been established at Community 1st Credit Union in Fairfield.  Checks may be taken directly to Community 1st Credit Union or mailed to 2216 256th Street, Fairfield, Iowa 52556. Peggy Jean Rice

Peggy Jean Rice, 69, of Mount Pleasant passed Sunday, October 2, 2022, at Arbor Court.

Peggy was born October 9, 1952, the daughter of Dennis and Martha Combs.  She graduated from Burlington High School.  On May 21, 1970, Peggy was united in marriage to Ronald Rice.  She managed the Homeless Shelter in Burlington for many years.

Peggy is survived by her daughter, Veronica (Charles) Gonzalez of Burlington; her son, Matthew (Melody) Rice of Antioch, California; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a sister Julie Anderson of Mount Pleasant; and three brothers, Teddy Combs, Danny Combs, and Duffy Combs all of Burlington.

Single Vehicle Crash

October 2, at approximately 11:41PM, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a single vehicle rollover near Mile Marker 45 on U.S. Highway 218 near to Mount Pleasant. After an investigation, it was found that the driver, Kathy Bridget Hensley-Birky of Cedar Rapids, was driving northbound on U.S. Highway 218.  She apparently fell asleep while driving.  The vehicle went off the roadway and drove off into the median striking a cable barrier. After striking the cable barrier, the vehicle rolled several times. The driver was transported to the Henry County Health Center for possible serious injuries. The vehicle was a total loss. The Mount Pleasant Police Department, Henry County Paramedics, and Mount Pleasant Fire all assisted with this accident. Hensley-Birky received a citation for failing to maintain control of a motor vehicle.

Argument Turns Physical Two Arrested

On October 1st, 2022, at approximately 10:30 a.m., the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a physical altercation in the 100-block of West 2nd Street in Wayland, IA.  It was reported the altercation was between family members.  An investigation into the situation determined, an argument between Genesis Chacon and Faviola Chacon turned physical.

As a result of the investigation Genesis Chacon, 28 of Wayland, and Faviola Chacon, 18 of Wayland, were arrested.  Both parties were charged with Assault causing Bodily Injury, serious misdemeanors.

Jacob Fett

Jacob Bruce Fett, 43, of Hillsboro, Iowa, passed away Saturday, October 1, 2022, at his home.

He was born March 1, 1979, in Keosauqua, Iowa, the son of Jimmy Ray and Janet (Haynes) Fett.

Jacob was a 1997 graduate of Harmony High School. He was employed as a Leadman at Dexter Laundry for 20 years where he enjoyed working and playing practical jokes on friends. He married Jacque Rae McDowell in February of 2002.

As a youth, he played baseball and collected ball cards. Classmates remember his shy nature, sharp mind, mad math and science skills, his love of hacky sack and ping pong tournaments in his basement. He was their homecoming king. As an adult, he collected blu-ray movies, vinyl records, and CDs. He enjoyed shooting pool, listening to music and having a good time with friends. He was an avid bargain shopper and loved a good deal.

He loved being outdoors, sometimes even falling asleep in front of a bonfire under the stars. He was a skywatcher and bought his children a telescope for Christmas so they could enjoy this activity together. He loved to ride his motorcycle and take his daughter on rides. He enjoyed spending time shooting guns with his son and throwing boomerangs. In his later years, he could often be found wrenching under the hood of a car.

Survivors include his mother: Janet Fett; brother: Jeremy Fett; sister: JennaLee (Jesse) Short, all of Bonaparte, Iowa; daughter: Jacey Fett; son: Jackson Fett, both of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; and nieces: Jaegan and Jaylee Short of Bonaparte, Iowa. Also surviving are uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father: Jim; brother: Benji Fett; sister-in-law: Oralia Fett; grandparents: Carole Jean and John Haynes and cousins: Zachary and Jonathan Batten.

His body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 7, 2022, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington. A memorial service will follow at 6:30 p.m. with Pastor Chad Welch officiating. Casual dress please.

Burial of cremains will be at a later date.

IMPACT Gallery Featured Artist

Kim Kingery is the featured artist for October and November at the Mount Pleasant Arts IMPACT gallery in the Public Library. Kingery is a Southeast Iowa photographer and a 1998 MPCHS graduate.

Kingery earned her BA in General Education/Art with a minor in Psychology from the University of Central Missouri. She’s the mother of one boy, a school bus driver, and photography/small business owner.

Kim has been a photographer for nearly her entire life. After having her son, she decided that “I needed to dive back in, showing him to always follow your passions in life.”

One of the main things that she hopes to come out of her photography work is to show her son that he should “always follow his passions in life.”

She said, “I liked to take pictures of friends, family, various activities, and objects. Not much has changed in that aspect, except changes from film to digital photography.”

For subject matter, Kim explains that “I shoot whatever catches my eye; I’m generally more of a realist.”

“I often catch a variety of images that include landscapes, wildlife, old barns, and architecture — the oddities on the backroads of SE Iowa,” she stated.

On Kim’s bucket list is to travel to other states searching for the interesting and unique to photograph. In the meantime her photography business finds her capturing memories for families or being out photographing locally to preserve images that catch her eye.

Her passion for photography is inspired by the belief that “Photos are lasting memories for when OUR memories fade.”

Kim Kingery’s photography exhibit will be on free public display through November at the Mount Pleasant Public Library during regular business hours Monday thru Thursday 9:00 am – 8 pm; Friday 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturday 9 am to 2 pm.

Mt. Pleasant Football

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers fell behind quick to the number four team in Class 4A, and the Iowa City Liberty Lightning did not let up as they kept scoring at will with the lethal passing attack leading to the final score of 68-6. Unfortunately, too many turnovers in the first half and a lack of consistency on offense highlighted the first half for the Panthers as the Lightning struck quick and often putting up 48 points in the first half and forcing three takeaways. The Panthers did have a nice 65-yard drive in the 3rd quarter that resulted in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Richtman to Garrett Cook, Richman’s tenth touchdown pass of the season and the Panthers first touchdown in six quarters. It is Homecoming next week for Mt. Pleasant as they will host Burlington, Lomont Molding sponsors our coverage of Panther Homecoming.

High School Football Scores

Winfield-Mt. Union dominated Tri-County winning 60-0. It done by committee as eight players ran with the ball and totaled 268 yards rushing and 6 touchdowns. Cole Milks threw for a touchdown and flashed the hands in the secondary returning an interception for a touchdown. Big matchup this Friday as the Wolves travel to play WACO.

Isaac Oswald tossed for 230 yards and 3 scores on the way for an easy win for the WACO Warriors over Lone Tree, 42-17. Simeon Reichenbach rushed for 125 yards and added 2 touchdowns on the ground.

New London crushed Iowa Valley 74 to 40 after scoring 38 points in the first half. The Tigers will be celebrating senior night this Friday against Lone Tree at 7 pm.

High School Volleyball

New London went 1-1 at their own tournament as they defeated Winfield-Mt. Union 2 sets to 1 by scores of 16-21, 21-14, and 15-4. But, lost to Mid-Prairie in straight sets. The Tigers next game will be Thursday, October 6th, against Fort Madison.

Winfield-Mt. Union finished 2nd in pool play after defeating Louisa-Muscatine and English Valleys in straight sets but losing to New London in three sets. In the semifinals, West Burlington ended the Wolves’ day in straight sets. Senior Keetyn Townsley recorded her 1,000th dig in the first set of the West Burlington game. Bradie Buffington led the team in kills with 28, Keely Malone had 58 assists, and Townsley added 10 serving aces. Their next game will be tomorrow, October 4th, at 7:30 pm against WACO.

Holy Trinity Catholic’s next game will be senior night when they host Central Lee tomorrow, October 4th, at 7:30 pm.

Tomorrow, October 4th, will be the start to the SEC Volleyball tournament hosted by Washington. Mt. Pleasant, Fairfield, Keokuk, Fort Madison, and Burlington will all be competing as well.

High School Cross Country

The Mount Pleasant boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams will be competing at Hillcrest Academy today.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

A big second half for the Tiger football team led to an emotional Homecoming win as they move to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference play after defeating Mayville State University 42-38 in a back-and-forth affair. The Tigers scored 28 points in the 3rd quarter after finding themselves down at halftime 14-7. A 2-yard rush by Parker Heidt gave the Tigers their first lead of the day and a Jaydon Varnado blocked punt and recovery in the endzone led to a two-possession lead over the Comets.  However, the Comets battled back and had a late lead with the Tigers at midfield with a fourth down. Then, AJ Moses found a hole and busted a 55-yard run down to the 3-yard line eventually leading to a 14-yard touchdown pass from Zach Chevalier to JC Gill with 1:10 left in the game and the defense held out. Coach Daniels had nothing for praise for his team after the game,

“I tell you what I’m so proud of our team, our players, our coaches because that pendulum was swinging back-and-forth all game our players and coaches did not give up. They’re the ones that make this program grow. I’m proud of them the way they practiced this week, how they bought into what we are building. 3-3, going to our next week, I’m on cloud nine right now.”

The Tigers will be at home Saturday, October 8th, to face off against Dickinson State University at 1 pm.

The Tiger volleyball team played tough but fell to St. Ambrose University in straight sets by scores of 25-21, 25-22, and 25-18. Malie DaMate led the team in kills with 7 and added 5 assists to her stat line. Leamaris Fuentes led the team in assists with 9. They will look to bounce back at home against Faith Baptist Bible College tomorrow, October 4th, at 7 pm.

The Tiger Women’s golf team finished in 4th place at the Knox Invite over the weekend. Aubrey Duncan finished in 7th with a two-day total of 175 followed by Michal Wohlleber who finished 8th overall with a total of 176. Sami Wibben finished tied for 15th, Natalie Ames tied for 24th, and Keelee Razee captured 30th. This is the end to the Tiger women’s fall schedule, they will be back on the course in March for the spring season.

The Men’s golf team will be competing in the Central Invite today with Tee time scheduled for 11 am.

The women’s soccer team’s next game will be tomorrow, October 4th, as they travel to clash with the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy Eutectics at 4 pm, as they look to extend their win streak to three games.

The men’s soccer team looks to get back in the win column October 5th, when they travel to play Missouri Baptist University at 2 pm.
