We will be taking an in-depth look into the outlook for agriculture in 2023 as the agriculture community starts planning for next year. Speakers and topics for this meeting include:

Dorothy Irene Rasan Menke, 97, of Tacoma, Washington, formerly of West Point, Iowa, passed away on May 13, 2022, in Tacoma, Washington.
Dorothy Irene was born on May 10, 1925, in Hazelton, Pennsylvania.
Dot was a women of generous spirit, an energetic worker, creative artist and musician, positive personality with a buoyant sense of humor. Most importantly she was a devoted wife and mother and person of devout faith.
She was a coal miner’s daughter, growing up with her two sisters and their Lithuanian parents near the coal mines around Hazelton, Pennsylvania. She distinguished herself in Hazelton High school as the artistic director of the yearbooks, a majorette, first chair violinist in the orchestra and an excellent student. Her teachers and fellow students chose her to be one of the top 20 students in their senior class.
Graduating from high school as WWII was beginning, Dot enrolled in a registered nursing program at King’s County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.It was during her final year that she had one of her proudest opportunities, to play her violin with a nurses ensemble at a luncheon for the visiting first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt.
Following graduation, she was one of a select group of nurses sent to an army hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.While there, she met and fell in love with an army technical training specialist, Richard Menke, from West Point, Iowa. When WWII ended the young couple had to decide on marriage or separation. They drove to Hazelton, PA where they were married and then drove to Rick’s home town at West Point, Iowa, and began setting up their home. Rick and Dot owned a Plumbing and Heating company in West Point and raised five children there. Dot always proclaimed, “Rick and I are a great team.” Rick and Dot instilled in their children the love of music, art and education.
Dot devotedly nursed her husband, Rick for many years before his death in 1994. Then she became a leader and energetic worker in St. Mary’s Catholic Church and School. She supported the community concert series and the Southeast Iowa Symphony. Many of her art works won awards in local competitions.
When Dot’s children brought her to Tacoma, Washington in 2005 her indomitable spirit continued as she delighted in entertaining her poetry group, playing cards, and attending church and concerts.
Dot’s love of organizing fun entertainments with music, skits, and artistic touches will always be remembered fondly. Her loving, generous spirit will is deeply appreciated and sorely missed.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 15, 2022, at Saint Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point, Iowa, with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery in West Point, Iowa. A memorial has been established in her memory. Patricia Susan Oberman Darbyshire, age 81, of rural Yarmouth, died Friday, October 7, 2022, at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington. Born January 26, 1941, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Jack and Wilma Kepper Oberman. On December 14, 1962, in Yarmouth, she married Larry Darbyshire.
She was a 1959 graduate of Yarmouth High School and a 1962 graduate of Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa. Pat practiced her nursing degree at Burlington Medical Center, Morning Sun Care Center, Morning Sun Clinic, and upon retirement she was the school nurse at Morning Sun Elementary and substitute nurse at Mediapolis.
Pat was a Sunday School Teacher, 4-H leader of the North Corner Cloverettes 4-H Club, president/director of the Des Moines County Fair Board, Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame inductee, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed attending her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughters’ events; knitting; reading; sports, more specifically the Iowa Hawkeyes and the St. Louis Cardinals; and spending time with her family. Pat was, in every part of her being, a caregiver.
Survivors include two daughters: Mary Steffener of Sperry and Pam (Dan) Massner of Mediapolis; a son, Tom (Sheila) Darbyshire of Morning Sun; nine grandchildren; two-step grandsons; six great granddaughters; five step-great grandchildren, two sisters: Claudia (Robert) Eldridge of New London and Peggy Linder of Dixon, Illinois; one brother, George (Cindy) Oberman of Dexter; sister-in-law, Dixie Hauswirth of Morning Sun; and several nieces and nephews.
Pat was preceded in death by her husband Larry, her parents, son-in-law David Steffener, brother-in-laws David Linder and Lawrence Hauswirth, and nephew Curtis Hauswirth.
Family will meet with friends from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 13, 2022, at Snyder and Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services in Mediapolis.
The funeral ceremony for Patricia Darbyshire will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 14, 2022, at Yarmouth Community Church. Burial will follow at the Trinity Cemetery in rural Mt. Union.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Mediapolis Library Children’s Programs and the Yarmouth Fire Department/EMS.
In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

High School Football Recap
The Mt. Pleasant Panthers almost shocked everyone at Evans Field last Friday and pulled off the upset over the Burlington Grayhounds on Homecoming night, but the Panthers were a fingertip away and lost 41-33. Jacob Richtman threw for 236 yards and 2 touchdowns in the performance, with Carter Amos leading the way for receivers as he tallied 6 catches for 88 yards and 2 touchdowns. Payton Hagans had a monster comeback game with 156 total yards and a rushing touchdown. Cooper Kleinkopf had an interception and Jaden Bauer, Peyton Walker, and Bryce Wilson each had fumble recoveries for the defense. The Panthers move to 0-7 on the season and they will travel to play Clinton next Friday, October 14th, at 7:30 pm.
Winfield-Mt. Union’s playoff hopes took a hit last Friday as WACO dominated from the opening whistle, cruising to a 43-0 victory over the Wolves. Simeon Reichenbach could not be stopped on the ground as he rushed for 162 yards and 3 touchdowns in the effort, while Cam Buffington was limited to only 14 yards rushing. Winfield-Mt. Union is now 5-3 on the season, while WACO is still undefeated at 8-0.
New London handled business on senior night beating Lone Tree 58-21. Dom Lopez was perfect on the night throwing 7 passes for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns. Borden Pickle ran for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns in the performance. Lopez added 2 more touchdowns on the ground, with Blaise Porter and Reean Seberg each adding 2 touchdowns of their own. Evan Reed caught one of the touchdowns. The Tigers are now 5-3 on the season, fighting for the playoffs.

High School Volleyball
WACO went 3-2 at the Washington Tournament last Saturday after defeating Keota, Washington, and Tri-County in straight sets. However, the Warriors were defeated by Regina Catholic twice, the first match 2 sets to 1 and in straight sets the second match. Grace Coble tallied 80 assists over the 5 matches with Ellah Kissell finishing with 36 kills. The Warriors next game will be October 11th at 7:30 pm at home against Highland.
The New London Tigers competed at the Davis County Tournament last Saturday and defeated Keokuk and Davis County 2 sets to 1 in each match. The Tigers finish the regular season with a 21-9 record.
The Mount Pleasant Panthers went 1-2 at the Oskaloosa Tournament last Saturday. The Panthers lost in straight sets to Marshalltown, defeated Fairfield in straight sets, and Ottumwa edged them out 2 sets to 1, winning the third set 15-12. The Panthers will be participating in the SEC Tournament tomorrow, it is a continuation from last Tuesday.
Winfield-Mt. Union will be heading into their last game of the regular season against Wapello tomorrow, October 11th, the Wolves are 21-9 with a 7-0 district record.
Holy Trinity Catholic will be competing at the Mediapolis Tournament Thursday, October 13th.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics
Tiger volleyball had a very successful weekend as they went 2-1 after defeating Crowley Ridge College 3 sets to 1 by scores of 23-25, 25-16, 25-22, and 25-19 on Friday, then losing to Florida College in straight sets, and defeating Haskell Indian Nations University in an exciting 5 set match that ended with a final score of 15-12 in the last set on Saturday. Malie DaMate had a monster weekend totaling 30 kills and 51 assists in the three matches. Emma Lincoln also had a nice weekend tallying 24 kills in the three matches, Madison Saia had 22 kills, and Bethany Williams finished with 18 kills. The Tigers next game will be October 13th against Waldorf University at 7 pm on the road.
The Tiger football team falls to 3-4 on the season and 1-1 in conference play as Dickinson State University defeated Iowa Wesleyan University 23-0. The Tigers were able to move the ball offensively against the Blue Hawk defense as they gained 367 total yards but could not hold on to the football as they surrendered 6 turnovers, 4 interceptions and 2 fumbles. One of those interceptions happened in the red zone to tie the game early in the first quarter. The Tiger defense held strong forcing 3 field goals, and getting 2 takeaways of their own, one interception by Jeremiah Pauling and one fumble recovery by Joseph Pace as it was forced by Jarius Evans. The Tigers will look to bounce back next Saturday, October 15th, as they face off with Valley City State University at 1 pm.
Men’s and women’s cross-country competed at the Seminole Valley Stampede over the weekend. The Tiger women were led by Faith Younce who ran a season best 21:36. Allison Morris was the next Tiger finishing with a season best of 22:15. Lilly Garnsey finished next, followed by Lidia Pamos, and Teya Hawkins whom each finished with season best times. The women finished in 16th out of 25 teams. The Tiger men were led by Logan Lucas, who ran a lifetime best of 27:35. Daron Jackson was the next Tiger to finish with his lifetime best of 28:50. Kenny tucker, Jabez Rivers, and Gannon McNamee also finished with lifetime bests. The men finished 19th out of 25 teams but broke two school records. They finished with the fastest total team time by almost 7 minutes and had a better team average time by over a minute. Both teams will be back in action October 14th to compete at the Indian Hills Invitational at 4 pm.
The Tiger women’s soccer team next game will be tomorrow, October 11th at Mediapolis High School where they will host William Penn University at 7 pm.
The men’s soccer team will travel to clash with Culver-Stockton College at 5 pm tomorrow, October 11th.
