Cross Country Results from Mt. Pleasant Invitational

The Mount Pleasant Invitational was run yesterday with the Varsity girl’s Large Class teams placing Washington(1:44:52) in first, Mt. Pleasant(1:51:54) in second, Fairfield(1:52:15) in third, and Oskaloosa(1:54:51) in fourth. For the Small Class it was Danville(1:53:46) in first, Columbus(2:03:09) in second, Louisa-Muscatine(2:12:20) in third, and Winfield-Mt. Union(2:26:32) in fourth.

For the Large Class, Iris Dahl and Quincy Griffis finished in 1st and 2nd with times of 20:04 and 20:55, respectively, for Washington. Emma Welcher was the top finisher for Mt. Pleasant in 3rd place with a time of 21:01. Isabelle Meador finished in 7th with a time of 21:16. Audrey Lord finished in 18th. Ella McNamee and Aliya Graber finished in 25th and 26th, respectively. Jayden Housh finished in 31st. Nelle Peterson, Saree Vine, and Natalie Parrot finished in 42nd through 44th, respectively.

For the Small Class, Danville had the the top two finishers in Alaina Gourley, 20:32, and Kamryn Sherwood, 21:21. Afton Wilkerson was Winfield-Mt. Unions top finisher in 17th place with a time of 26:33. WACO’s top three finishers placed 14th, 15th, and 16th with McKenzie Vradenburg, Hannah Dennis, and Justine Lynn, respectively.

The boy’s Varsity Large Class had Washington(1:28:28) finish in first, Oskaloosa(1:30:51) in second, Mt. Pleasant(1:32:11) in third, Fairfield(1:35:20) in fourth. Danville(1:26:57) finished in first, Columbus(1:34:30) in second, Winfield-Mt. Union(1:35:28) in third, Louisa-Muscatine(1:40:58) in fourth, Central Lee(1:43:09) in fifth, and WACO(1:43:41) in sixth.

For the Large Class, Micah Rees had the top time for Washington at 16:10. Ben Carthey had the top time for the Panthers at 17:08, which was placed him in 2nd. Jude Dykstra, a freshman for Mt. Pleasant, finished in 7th with a time of 18:05. Jonathan Hough finished in 16th. Isaac Rynders, Gabe Feldmann, Tyler Johnson, and Ethan Brush finished in 21st through 24th, respectively.

For the Small Class, Danville had the top three finishers in AJ Bonnesen(16:20), Rylan Martin(17:08), and Carter Fesler(17:18), respectively. Gabriel Hemsworth and Kohlby Newsom finished in 4th and 5th for Winfield-Mt. Union with times of 17:37 and 17:55, respectively. Isaac rich was the top finisher for WACO in 20th place with a time of 19:36.

Gregg “Moose” Eugene Meyer

Gregg “Moose” Eugene Meyer, 60, of Keosauqua passed away at his home on Wednesday September 21, 2022.  Visitation will be held from 10 to 11AM prior to the service on Saturday October 1, 2022 at Pedrick Funeral home in Keosauqua, with a memorial service beginning at 11:00AM with Pastor Jerry Hoover officiating.  Private burial of cremains will be at a later date in Vernon Cemetery.  Memorials to Vernon Cemetery may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 23004 Quail Road, Keosauqua, IA 52565.

Gregg was born on May 27, 1962 in Keosauqua to Walter Clifford and Juanita Mae Thompson Meyer.  He grew up on the family’s dairy farm near Vernon and graduated from Harmony High School in 1980.  After high school Gregg left the farm and went to college in Emmetsburg Iowa for Dairy Farm Management.  He then worked for a short while for Rathbun Rural Water before starting to work at Dexter Foundry and then moving to the factory and becoming a welder.  After 33 years of service Gregg was able to retire in 2021.  Gregg met his wife, Kimberly Sue Swanson and they were married on December 31, 2020 in Fairfield after being together for 30 years.

Gregg was the President of the Vernon Cemetery association, a loyal member of the Machinists Union 1293 in Fairfield.  He had volunteered at Old Threshers making sorghum with his good friend Bob for over 30 years.  His greatest passion in life was to be outdoors hunting and fishing, he loved to hunt raccoons with his Blue Tick Hounds and would often sleep in a field when he was finished for the night and leave from there to head to work in the morning.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Kimberly Swanson-Meyer of Keosauqua,  two sons, Clifford Meyer of Fairfield and Thomas Meyer (Haley Jo) of Keosauqua, a daughter, Carrie Cosgrove (Terry) of Houghton, three brothers, Larry Meyer (Leticia) of Virginia Beach, Mark Meyer (Pam) of Keosauqua and Darrell Meyer (Pat) of Keosauqua, three sisters, Lila Kay Baxter (Carl) of Keosauqua, Waverly Meyer of Bonaparte and Sharon Miller (Bud) of Keosauqua, eight grandchildren, Jeremiah Cosgrove, Cole, Ember, Nadine, Makenna, Walter, Nelson and Virginia Meyer, in-laws Richard and Virginia Swanson of San Antonio, TX, his two dogs, Rose and Lily and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents .

 

Sports, September 23rd

High School Volleyball

Pool play started yesterday, September 22nd, for the Southeast Iowa Super Conference. The tournament is highlighted by West Burlington, WACO, New London, and Holy Trinity Catholic who were all ranked in last weeks Top 15 Iowa High School Volleyball rankings compiled by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

In pool one it was West Burlington that ran the table going 3-0 and winning in straight sets over Central Lee, Lone Tree, and Mediapolis. Central Lee went 2-1 defeating Mediapolis and Lone Tree in straight sets. Mediapolis went 1-2 with their lone win coming against Lone Tree who went 0-3.

Notre Dame was the host team for pool two but did not treat their guest’s kindly as they went 4-0, defeating all their opponents in straight sets.

Pool 3 was played at Harmony High School with Van Buren County being the host. WACO went 2-1 as they defeated Hillcrest Academy and Van Buren County handily in straight sets, but New London got the best of them winning 2 sets to 1, 21-19, 18-21, and 15-10.

Winfield-Mt. Union, the fourth seed, hosted the fourth and final pool play and dominated their first two games defeating Pekin and Highland in straight sets. However, Holy Trinity Catholic bested them 2 sets to 1 winning the third set 15-8. The 2-1 record is enough for Winfield-Mt. Union to advance to the finals. Melina Oepping led the Wolves in kills with 18, while Keely Malone tallied 40 assists.

Play continues tomorrow, September 24th, as we head to the finals.

High School Cross Country

Ben Carthey was the lead runner for the Panthers as he finished in 2nd place with a time of 17:08. Jude Dykstra, a freshman for Mt. Pleasant, finished in 7th with a time of 18:05. Jonathan Hough finished in 16th. Isaac Rynders, Gabe Feldmann, Tyler Johnson, and Ethan Brush finished in 21st through 24th, respectively. Washington won the Large Class and Danville won the Small Class.

High School Football Recap

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers travel to play Fort Madison tonight. The Panthers will lean on their passing attack to bring down the Bloodhounds talented defense that is allowing less than ten points a contest. The game will be on KILJ with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 pm, pregame at 7:15.

WACO celebrates Homecoming this week and they look to continue their perfect season when they face off against the New London Tigers at 7 pm tonight.

Winfield-Mt. Union will be celebrating Homecoming this week against a 3-1 Lone Tree team at 7 pm tonight.

Washington will look to right the ship against Grinnell this Friday for their Homecoming game and Fairfield will look to spoil Keokuk’s Homecoming at 7:30 pm tonight.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The women’s soccer next game will be tomorrow, September 24th, against Waldorf University in Burlington at 2 pm.

The Tiger volleyball team is looking for their second win in a row today, September 23rd, when they face off against Culver-Stockton College at 7 pm.

The Tiger football team will play Dakota State University to start conference play tomorrow on the road at 4 pm. Men’s soccer will face off against Waldorf on Saturday, as well, clashing with them at 4 pm.

The men’s and women’s golf team traveled to play in the Simpson Fall Invitational on Wednesday, and Aubrey Duncan continued her dominance from the weekend and finished in 2nd place overall as she shot a 78. Duncan was named to the All-Tournament Team for her 2nd place finish. The Tiger women finished in 5th out of 8 teams with a total of 360 strokes. The men also finished 5th out of 8 total teams with a team total of 318 strokes. Trace White was the standout as he tied for 5th with a shot of 76. He joined Duncan on the All-Tournament Team. Men’s and women’s golf will be participating in the Purple Cup on Saturday and Sunday, both Tee offs scheduled for 12:30 pm.

Sewer Smoking Continues

Warner Engineering Staff will be smoking sewers again Friday 9-23-2022 in Mt Pleasant. The Area they will be primarily smoking in will be Monroe St. to the Railroad Tracks and from Jefferson St. to Adams St. The crew will be starting on the westerly side of this area and work their way East.

If you get smoke in your house please step out and tell someone on the crew. They will help you determine where the smoke is getting into your home. Remember if you get smoke you can also have sewer gases getting into your home. These sewer gases could be fatal so please let someone know.

Hank Williams’ Life and Music Revisited

FAIRFIELD — On September 29th, Fairfield Arts & Convention Center will be presenting Hank & My Honky Tonk Heroes, a Hank Williams tribute performed by Jason Petty. Norman Lewis Forster

Norman Lewis Forster, 87, died extremely unexpectedly at his home in Bettendorf on September 15, 2022. He was six days shy of his 88th birthday. He was active, on the move, and planning fun things for the future through his final hours.

Norman was born on September 21, 1934, in Roseville, Illinois, the youngest of three children born to Parks Kingsley and Florence Irene (Hedges) Forster. The family moved a lot when Norm was young before settling in Fairfield, Iowa. Norm graduated from Fairfield High School in 1953, where he excelled at academics and sports, including playing in the 1953 State Football Championship game where he “threw blocks up and down the field.” With his father, he farmed and also worked on some of his inventions, including Forster Hybrid Seed Corn, which, upon his dad’s death in 1966, was acquired by Pioneer Seed Corn. Norm’s family relocated to Houghton, Iowa during his senior year, but he continued to commute until graduation. It was in Houghton that Norm met “the girl across the street,” Carol Kathleen Dingman, who he would end up marrying.

Norm knew he was going to get drafted, so he enlisted in the Navy. Upon performing very well on the intelligence exams, he was quickly promoted to Communications Electrician on the ship. Norman spent time in Santa Barbara, Hawaii, Midway Island, Japan, Taiwan, Guam, Hong Kong and The Philippines during his two years of service. He saw and experienced so much and had many tales to tell.

Upon discharge, Norm married Carol on June 7, 1958, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton, Iowa. Norm converted to Catholicism shortly before their wedding. They were blessed with 64 wonderful years of marriage. The couple lived in Madison, Wisconsin while Norm attended school. He graduated with a Major in Business and Minors in Mathematics and Economics from The University of Wisconsin- Madison.

Once Norm graduated from the University of Wisconsin, he accepted a job with Air Force Logistics Command in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with the AC Electronics Division of General Motors. There, he monitored contracts for space and missile guidance and navigation systems, which included work on Apollo 11. He served a long career with the Federal Government, which allowed Carol and him to live in a number of different cities. He had many good traveling stories from his days visiting Army Ammunition Plants across the country. Eventually, Norm transferred to the Rock Island Arsenal and this is where he would finish out his career.

It was in Bettendorf on January 7, 1981, that the pride and joy of Norm’s life, Caroline Claire, was born. He was the best dad who wore his love on his sleeve. He spent countless hours playing, serving as her hair model, swimming, chauffeuring, going to sporting events, theatre and music events, playing tennis, traveling, shopping, building elaborate science experiments and doing anything else Caroline wanted to do. He served as Caroline’s role model and the person she knew she could always turn to for sound advice and lots of fun.

Norm retired from the Federal Government on January 31, 1994, after serving 33 years as a Civil Servant for the Navy and Army. His final position was Chief of Project Planning Control for the Army Armament Munitions and Chemical Command, although he served in many roles throughout his career. After retiring, Norm served as Business Manager at Our Lady of Lourdes for eleven years, as sitting around never suited him and he found golf boring.

The second and third great joys of Norm’s life were born on March 30, 2013 and July 6, 2017. Ronan and Claire were best friends with their Pa. Continuing the tradition of being a constant playmate, chauffeur and entertainer, their favorite thing to do was to go to Pa and Ma’s. The love, patience and fun he showed them was amazing. He wore his title of Pa with pride and the kids were so lucky to have the best. He spent countless hours playing, entertaining, teaching, talking, watching cartoons, taking them swimming and to the park, having movie nights, watching their shows and, as he would say, “constantly feeding them.” They will have to learn to make his famous “midnight” snacks and carry on all of his special traditions.

Norm’s whole world was his wife, daughter and grandkids. He was a provider and always made sure they were well taken care of until the last day of his life. He was kind, intelligent, patient, humble (so this obituary would completely embarrass him) and a man of great integrity and values. He always stood up for what was right. He was reliable, dependable and always early. He had a dry wit and was a faithful Green Bay Packers and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He loved going to Northern Michigan in the summer and introduced this love to Caroline, Ronan and Claire. One crowning achievement was he could drink a beer while standing on his head. There will never be another man like Norm.

Norman Lewis is survived by his wife: Carol Kathleen (Dingman) of Bettendorf; daughter: Caroline Claire Sullivan and her husband Eric Michael Sullivan; grandchildren: Ronan Forster Sullivan and Claire Kelly Sullivan all of Chicago, and his sister: Helen Forster of Webster Groves, Missouri. He is also survived by nieces: Bonnie (Dale) Frels and Peggy Parrish, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Mary Ann McGuire (the late Bernie) of St. Louis, Jeanne (Greg) Pieper of St. Paul, Iowa, Missy (the late Bernard John) Dingman of Scottsdale, Dorothy McLaughlin (Michael) of St. Louis, Margaret (John) Rector of Buckeye, Arizona, Jeffrey (the late Laura Dingman) Stuffings of Longmont, Colorado and by numerous Dingman nieces and nephews.

Norm was proceeded in death by his parents: Parks Kingsley and Florence Irene (Hedges) Forster; sister and her husband: Lois (Forster) and Vernon Parrish; his mother and father-in-law: Bernard and Claire (Kelly) Dingman; infant granddaughter; Kathleen Therese Sullivan and nephew: Mark Pieper. We know they were waiting with open arms to greet Norm in Heaven. We were not prepared or ready to say good-bye and we will continue to love and miss him so much.

 

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 am, Thursday, September 29, 2022, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton, Iowa with Father Dan Dorau and Father Bruce DeRammelaere as concelebrants.

 

Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Houghton with full military rites presented by the West Point American Legion Holtz – Geers Post #668.

 

In lieu of flowers, please say a prayer for Norman or have Masses dedicated. Memorials may be made in Norman’s honor to St. John’s Catholic Church.

WACO King and Queen Crowned

Congratulations to the WACO Homecoming King and Queen….Simeon Reichenbach and Katie Leichty. The court includes Ellah Kissel, Jocelyn Fulton, Grace Coble, Mason Miller, Odee Shtefanchuk, and Drew Diers. The coronation was held Wednesday during Boom Night activities.
