Glenda Rose Ferguson-Moeller

Glenda Rose Ferguson-Moeller, 82, of Houghton, Iowa, passed away at 12:25 p.m. Saturday, September 10, 2022, at the Klein Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Born on April 14, 1940, in Kahoka, Missouri, the daughter of Leon and Helen (Benge) Smith. On June 22,1958, she married Howard Ferguson. He preceded her in death on July 19, 2002. She then married Marvin Moeller on December 28, 2005.

Survivors include her husband: Marvin; daughter: Kim Ferguson of Niota, Illinois; son: Chad (Sue) Ferguson of Niota, Illinois; two grandchildren: Rob (Beth) Ferguson and Rachel Ferguson; three great grandchildren: Benjamin, William and Wyatt; three step-children:  Linda (Sam) Gaylord; Marty (Deb) Moeller and Laura (Justin Cole) Spratt; four step-grandchildren: Mitch (Kathryn) Moeller, Makenzie (Kameron) Cooper, Colton Thompson and Megan Thompson; five step great-grandchildren: Beau, Preston, Addie, Maggie and Layne. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Howard and one sister: Wanda Gaylord.

Glenda was a graduate of Fort Madison High School, Southeastern Community College, Western Illinois University and Saint Francis University in Joliet, Illinois. She was a member of Saint John’s Catholic Church, the Sunshine Girls and Silver Steppers. Glenda was a Registered Nurse and retired from Southeastern Community College as Director of Health Education. She loved her family. Her best day’s were spending time with family and friends.

Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point, Iowa, where the family will meet with friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point, Iowa, with Father Dan Dorau officiating.

Following the funeral service a luncheon will be held at the West Point American Legion.

Following the luncheon a private burial will be held in the Appanoose Township Cemetery near Niota, Illinois.

A memorial has been established in her memory for Saint John’s Church or the Niota Park.

Single Vehicle Crash

Saturday night Mount Pleasant Police were dispatched to investigate a motor vehicle accident in the 200 block of North Wilson Street. Upon investigation, it was determined that Jose Gomez Perez of Mt. Pleasant, was driving north on North Wilson Street. As he was driving he was attempting to fix the windshield wiper switch inside of his vehicle. Perez failed to stay in his lane and traveled into the opposite lane of traffic. His vehicle then collided with a legally parked car. The collision caused the Perez vehicle to overturn, coming to a rest on its’ top. Both vehicles sustained significant damage which was estimated to be in excess of $8,500 dollars. Perez was not injured. He was issued citations for failure to provide proof of financial liability and no valid driver’s license.

 

Erica MacBeth

Erica “Ricky” Jo MacBeth, 79, of Danville, Iowa died Friday, September 9, 2022, at University of Iowa Hospitals. She was born in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania on September 24, 1942 to Harold and Alice Marie Griffiths Sneden. She was a graduate of Peters Township High School; Waynesburg College of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania and received her Masters from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. In 1974 she married James B. MacBeth in Waynesburg.

All of her life was devoted to public education. She taught second grade at Allison Elementary in Houston, Pennsylvania, then was librarian and media specialist for the Morning Sun and Winfield Mt. Union schools for four years, and retired after twenty-four years with the Burlington school district as librarian and media specialist. She was a master gardener and loved their life on the farm; was an avid reader of mysteries; enjoyed writing letters; and loved her cats and dogs.

Survivors include her husband of Danville; daughters Lynn MacBeth of Pittsburgh and Sandra MacBeth of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania; sons Bruce (Kim) MacBeth of Claysville, Pennsylvania and Andrew (Angela) MacBeth of Eighty Four, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her three younger brothers, Chris (Gail) Sneden of Austin, Texas, Michael (Laurie) Sneden of St. Louis, Missouri, and Al (Daryll) Sneden of Richmond, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents.

The funeral service for Ricky will be held at 3:00 pm Thursday, September 15, 2022 at Elliott Chapel, New London, Iowa with Pastor David Mixon officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Burge Cemetery, rural New London. A memorial has been established for HJ Nugen Library in New London. Online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.

Mt. Pleasant Football

In what was an emotional night for everyone involved as the game was dedicated to Lucas and Noah, two Keokuk teenagers who were involved in a car crash last weekend, the Chiefs got the best of the Panthers in front of their home crowd, 45-29. It was a defensive effort to start the game until the Chiefs started the scoring off with a long touchdown pass from Brenton Hoard to Diego Garcia. Mt. Pleasant responded by driving 86-yards to tie the game up with a 3-yard Payton Walker touchdown run. Keokuk immediately took the lead on a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Emerson Glasgow and they did not look back. The Panthers best opportunity came at the start of the third quarter when they recovered an onside kick. Only down ten, 17-7, and down at the ten, the Panthers coughed up the ball. This was the start of a quarter that resulted in three total turnovers for the Panthers. Unfortunately, another game where mistakes determined the outcome for Mt. Pleasant. Zerek Venghaus had a 13-yard rushing touchdown for his second of the season; the last touchdown was a 75-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Richtman to Bowen Davis in the fourth quarter. Despite the score not being in favor of the Panthers, Coach Striegel was proud of the resilience shown by the kids and wanted to pass along love to everyone in both communities.

Other High School Scores

WACO demolished English Valleys, 49-0, with their two leaders combining for five total touchdowns. Simeon Reichenbach rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown, while Isaac Oswald threw for 139 yards and two touchdowns and added two more on the ground. 

New London has now won two straight after defeating Winfield-Mt. Union on the road, 50-44. The Wolves put up 28 points in the fourth quarter to try and make a late comeback but the Tigers had done enough to walk away with the victory. Cam Buffington finished with 234 total yards and four touchdowns, but it was not enough as the Tigers have now won seven games straight against the Wolves.

Fort Madison moved to 3-0 on the season after defeating Fairfield in a close game, 16-13. Clear Creek Amana handled Washington, 31-6, in front of the Demons home crowd. 

High School Volleyball

Winfield-Mt. Union went 3-1 at the Wilton Tournament today. They lost their first game against Wilton in straight sets, but rattled off victories over Mediapolis, 2 sets to 1, Burlington, and Mount Pleasant, both in straight sets. Their next game will be at home on Tuesday, September 13th, against Hillcrest Academy at 6:30 pm.

Burlington Notre Dame competed in a tournament at North Scott earlier today.  

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

Tigers volleyball lost in straight sets to St. Mary of the Woods and Waldorf in a Tri-Match earlier this afternoon. Maddie Saia led in kills with 8 against St. Mary of the Woods, and led in kills against Waldorf finishing with 7. The Tigers next game is Monday, September 12th, against Harris-Stowe State University at home at 6 pm. 

Men’s and women’s cross country teams finished 6th out of 10 teams at the Fighting Bee Invitational today. In the Women’s 5000 meter run, the top finishers for the Tigers was Lily Garnsey, who ran a time of 22:23, and Faith Younce, who finished with a time of 22:29, they came in 19th and 20th, respectively. In the Men’s 8000 meter run, the top finisher for the Tigers was Logan Lucas who finished in 27th with a time of 30:14. The next finishers for Iowa Wesleyan were Daron Jackson and Kenny Tucker, they finished in 39th and 40th, respectively.  Both teams will compete at the Grand View Viking Invitational September 24th.  

Men’s soccer lost to Midland University this afternoon, 1-0. Francisco Javier Saldana led the Tigers in shots on goal with three. Both teams were level with shots on goal with seven, but Midland had more opportunities with 26 shots compared to the Tigers’ 10. Their next game will be September 14th when they face off with the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis. 

Women’s soccer looks to make it two straight wins when they face off with Culver-Stockton College on the road tomorrow, September 11th. The game is scheduled to start at 1 pm. 

The Tiger Football team got their first win of the season in dominant fashion against Westminster College, 41-6. They will be back at home next Saturday, September 17th, playing Finlandia University at noon. 

Men’s and Women’s golf continue the Klocke Classic tomorrow, September 11th.

Sewer Smoking Information

Friday over the noon hour, the Mount Pleasant Fire Department was called to the Tolson Community Action Center, on West Washington Street to investigate smoke in one of the restrooms. It was determined the smoke was from the process of smoking sewers that is being done by Warner Engineering. They will continue smoking sewers on Monday. Crews will be working on West Washington Street from Saunders Avenue east to Jackson Street. If you have property in this area and see smoke in your building please step outside and let one of the crew members know so they can help you determine where the smoke is getting in. Remember, if you get smoke in your building it could mean sewer gases are getting in.  Sometimes you don’t notice the sewer gas smell but it could be fatal. Crews are primarily smoking on Washington Street but the smoke can also travel farther down the sewer pipes into side streets.

The Oakland Mills Nature Center is closed Saturday, 9-10-2022.  The dumping station in the South Shore campground is also closed until further notice.

On another note, Conservation Department Director Caleb Waters is looking for more volunteers to host visitors to the Nature Center. If you are interested contact the Department office at 319-986-5067.
