Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Charges

On September 09, 2022, at approximately 10:01 P.M., the Henry County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on US Highway 34 near Clayton Avenue in Mount Pleasant on a vehicle for a traffic violation.

Upon speaking with the driver, later identified as Nicky L. Garrett, 40, of Eldon, Iowa, it was discovered he held a “Not Valid” driving status through the state of Iowa.

Upon further investigation by deputies, a search was conducted of the vehicle where amounts of Methamphetamine, Marijuana, and drug paraphernalia were located.

Resulting from the investigation, Nicky was arrested for Possession of Controlled Substance – 3rd or Subsequent Offense (D Felony), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – (Serious Misdemeanor), and No Valid Driver’s License – (Simple Misdemeanor).

Delores Mae Camelin

Delores Mae Camelin age 94 of Fairfield passed away at Prestige Care Center.

Delores was born October 20th 1927, in Pennsylvania to Leo and Teresa (Jones) Snyder. She was married to Edward Larson.  He passed away. Delores later married Everette (Ebb) Camelin.  He passed away April 22, 2007.

Delores was a caregiver to the elderly, worked in nursing homes, and worked at the ordinance plant in Middletown.  She lived in Illinois, Oakville, Iowa, and Fairfield, Iowa. Delores loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed playing bingo, cards, fishing, adult coloring, old TV shows, and church.

Delores is survived by two daughters, Emma (Richard) Horton of Davenport and Sarah Craig of Fairfield; three sons, Eddie Larson of Chariton, Joe (Janet) Tate of Clarinda and Bill (Patty Ingle) Camelin of Fairfield; daughter-in-law, Rhonda Larson; eight grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; one brother, Ralph Snyder from Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Teresa; husbands, Edward Larson & Everette Camelin (World War II veteran); son, Leo Larson; two sisters, Rose Miller and Delores Lipph; three brothers, Jack Snyder, Wilmer Snyder and Robert Snyder; and son in law, Damien Craig.

There will be a celebration of life at Jefferson County Park shelter #1, up the hill & to the right, on Saturday, September 17th at 1:30 PM with Guy Sammons officiating.  Burial will be at a later date.

Mount Pleasant to Host Marching Band Invitational This Saturday

The annual Mt. Pleasant Marching Band Invitational will be held Saturday, September 17 at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex. Admission is $5.00 and concessions will be available.  This is probably the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Mount Pleasant Music Boosters.

Rosa L. Prevett

Rosa L. Prevett, 81 of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Friday, August 12, 2022, at her daughter’s home.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2022, at 2 p.m. at the Hillsboro Cemetery, with words of comfort by Jeff Murphy.   Memorials may be directed to the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice of West Burlington in her memory.

High School Football Recap

Mt. Pleasant falls to 0-3 after losing to Keokuk last Friday, 45-29. It was knotted up at 7 in the first quarter after a long drive by the Panthers, but Emerson Glasgow responded by returning the kickoff 84-yards to retake the lead for the Chiefs. Jacob Richtman finished the day with 312 yards and 2 touchdowns. Payton Walker and Zerek Venghaus both rushed for a touchdown, while Wyatt Woodsmall and Bowen Davis were the receivers for the passing touchdowns. The Panthers are at home this Friday to face off against West Burlington, who is also 0-3 after losing to Mediapolis last Friday.

WACO demolished English Valleys, 49-0, with their two leaders combining for five total touchdowns. Simeon Reichenbach rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown, while Isaac Oswald threw for 139 yards and two touchdowns and added two more on the ground. WACO will face off with Iowa Valley this Friday, September 16th.

New London has now won two straight after defeating Winfield-Mt. Union on the road, 50-44. The Wolves put up 28 points in the fourth quarter to try and make a late comeback, but the Tigers had done enough to walk away with the victory. Cam Buffington finished with 234 total yards and four touchdowns, but it was not enough as the Tigers have now won seven games straight against the Wolves. Winfield-Mt. Union tries to right the ship against HLV, and New London will celebrate homecoming against English Valleys.

Fort Madison moved to 3-0 on the season after defeating Fairfield in a close game, 16-13. Clear Creek Amana handled Washington, 31-6, in front of the Demons home crowd. Fort Madison will defend their home field against Washington, while Fairfield will travel to play Knoxville

High School Volleyball

Mt. Pleasant will be at home tomorrow, September 13th, to play the 4-11, Washington Demons.

Winfield-Mt. Union plays tomorrow, September 13th, at home against Hillcrest Academy. Game is scheduled to start at 6:30pm.

New London travels to play Van Buren County at 7 pm tomorrow, September 13th.

Holy Trinity Catholic is on the road to face off against Mediapolis tomorrow, September 13th, at 7:30 pm.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

Women’s soccer fell to Culver-Stockton College 6-0 yesterday. The Tigers managed only three shots on goal as they fall to 1-3 on the season. They will travel to play Cornell College at 5 pm on Wednesday, September 14th.

Men’s and women’s golf competed in the Klocke Classic over the weekend finishing up play yesterday. The men’s team finished in tenth out of ten teams and the women’s team finished in ninth out of twelve teams. Next Saturday, September 17th, both teams will compete at the Monmouth Invite.

The Tigers have a volleyball match tonight against Harris-Stowe State University at home. They will be looking for crowd support with the first serve scheduled to take place at 6 pm.

The Tigers football team got a big win last weekend as they defeated Westminster 41-6.  Askia Moses rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns in the win with Major Niccum leading the team in tackles with 14, including a sack. They will be at home this Saturday, September 17th, to play Finlandia University at noon.

Glenda Rose Ferguson-Moeller

Glenda Rose Ferguson-Moeller, 82, of Houghton, Iowa, passed away at 12:25 p.m. Saturday, September 10, 2022, at the Klein Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Born on April 14, 1940, in Kahoka, Missouri, the daughter of Leon and Helen (Benge) Smith. On June 22,1958, she married Howard Ferguson. He preceded her in death on July 19, 2002. She then married Marvin Moeller on December 28, 2005.

Survivors include her husband: Marvin; daughter: Kim Ferguson of Niota, Illinois; son: Chad (Sue) Ferguson of Niota, Illinois; two grandchildren: Rob (Beth) Ferguson and Rachel Ferguson; three great grandchildren: Benjamin, William and Wyatt; three step-children:  Linda (Sam) Gaylord; Marty (Deb) Moeller and Laura (Justin Cole) Spratt; four step-grandchildren: Mitch (Kathryn) Moeller, Makenzie (Kameron) Cooper, Colton Thompson and Megan Thompson; five step great-grandchildren: Beau, Preston, Addie, Maggie and Layne. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Howard and one sister: Wanda Gaylord.

Glenda was a graduate of Fort Madison High School, Southeastern Community College, Western Illinois University and Saint Francis University in Joliet, Illinois. She was a member of Saint John’s Catholic Church, the Sunshine Girls and Silver Steppers. Glenda was a Registered Nurse and retired from Southeastern Community College as Director of Health Education. She loved her family. Her best day’s were spending time with family and friends.

Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point, Iowa, where the family will meet with friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 14, 2022, at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point, Iowa, with Father Dan Dorau officiating.

Following the funeral service a luncheon will be held at the West Point American Legion.

Following the luncheon a private burial will be held in the Appanoose Township Cemetery near Niota, Illinois.

A memorial has been established in her memory for Saint John’s Church or the Niota Park.

Single Vehicle Crash

Saturday night Mount Pleasant Police were dispatched to investigate a motor vehicle accident in the 200 block of North Wilson Street. Upon investigation, it was determined that Jose Gomez Perez of Mt. Pleasant, was driving north on North Wilson Street. As he was driving he was attempting to fix the windshield wiper switch inside of his vehicle. Perez failed to stay in his lane and traveled into the opposite lane of traffic. His vehicle then collided with a legally parked car. The collision caused the Perez vehicle to overturn, coming to a rest on its’ top. Both vehicles sustained significant damage which was estimated to be in excess of $8,500 dollars. Perez was not injured. He was issued citations for failure to provide proof of financial liability and no valid driver’s license.
