Wanda Maxine Hatch

Wanda Maxine Hatch, 88, passed away on Thursday, September 1, 2022, at Park Place Elder Living in Mount Pleasant.

Wanda was born May 12, 1934, near Trenton, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Imal (Norton) Rich. She attended country schools, Elm and Eagle, through 8th grade and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School. During high school Wanda worked at Van’s Lunch Box and enjoyed her lifelong love of music by playing cornet in the high school band. After graduation she worked at the Mount Pleasant Telephone Co., REC, Iowa Ordnance Plant, and later at the Mental Health Institute and Employees Training Center as a secretary for 36 years, retiring in 1996.

Wanda married James Hatch on December 26, 1951. They lived on a farm north of Mount Pleasant for approximately 40 years. During this time and after retirement, Wanda became a member of the Mount Pleasant Rhythm Rockers. She formed a country band called “The Scrubs” and enjoyed playing keyboard and singing with friends.  She was a member of the Trenton Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son Randy James Hatch of Norwalk; and a sister Ardith Rump of Burlington.  Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Martha Queen; brother-in-law Everett (Judy) Hatch; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on August 10, 2008, a brother, Melvin Rich; two sisters, Merna (Chuck) Simmons, infant Thelma Lorene; and brother-in-law Tom Rump.

Funeral service will be held 1:00 pm, Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Jeff McPheron officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am until service time, the family will not be present. Dennis W. Krieger

Dennis W. Krieger, 72, of Middletown, died Friday, July 1, 2022 at Veterans Medical Center, Iowa City.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1:00 – 4:00 pm, Sunday, September 11, 2022 at Elliott Chapel, New London. Casual sharing time will be led by Ned Fry. Full military burial at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Adel, Iowa will take place at 2:00 pm, Thursday, September 15, 2022. Auditor of State Rob Sand has released an audit report on Henry County, Iowa.

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS:
The County’s revenues totaled $23,264,690 for the year ended June 30, 2021, a 37.1% increase over
the prior year. Expenses for County operations for the year ended June 30, 2021 totaled $17,925,846,
a 4.2% increase over the prior year. The significant increase in revenues is primarily due to an increase
in property tax revenue and in infrastructure assets contributed by the Iowa Department of
Transportation.
AUDIT FINDINGS:
Sand reported thirteen findings related to the receipt and expenditure of taxpayer funds. They are
found on pages 78 through 89 of this report. The findings address issues such as lack of segregation of
duties, material amounts of receivables not properly recorded in the County’s financial statements, lack
of reconciliations public health billings, collections and delinquent accounts and an unallowable
donation to a private entity. Sand provided the County with recommendations to address each of these
findings.
Ten of the findings discussed above for the County are repeated from the prior year. The County Board
of Supervisors and other elected officials have a fiduciary responsibility to provide oversight of the
County’s operations and financial transactions. Oversight is typically defined as the “watchful and
responsible care” a governing body exercises in its fiduciary capacity.

Traina U. Lindsey, 74, of Mt. Pleasant passed away at her home on Wednesday, August 31, 2022.

Update: Iowa High School Volleyball Rankings for Week 2

There was some movement in the rankings for Class 1A with Holy Trinity Catholic originally ranked at the top of the list now find themselves down at the number 8 slot. Taking over that number 1 spot was North Tama. Burlington Notre Dame moved from 8th to 7th and New London took over the 15th position as Winfield-Mt. Union fell out of the top 15.

For Class 2A, the rankings stayed the for the top 4 teams with Dike-New Hartford, Western Christian, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, and West Burlington ranked in that order.

Class 3A saw little movement in their top 5 with Mount Vernon still holding the top spot. Davis County fell out of the top 15 from their original ranking of 9.

Class 4A saw only one team drop out of the top 15 but there was a little bit of reshuffling. Marion stayed at the top spot but North Scott moved from tenth all the way up to number 5. Bishop Heelan was originally in second, but fell back to eighth.

Cedar Falls claimed the top sport in the 5A rankings with Iowa City Liberty falling from the top spot back to 4th. Sioux City North and Iowa City High were the two teams to fall out of the top 15, ranked at 13 and 15, respectively.

Sports, September 2nd

High School Football

Mt. Pleasant will be at home tonight, September 2nd, against the Washington Demon’s. The Panthers will be looking to get their first win of the season with Payton Hagans running with the football as he scored a touchdown last week. Coach Bennett and I will be on the call for this game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm, pregame will be at 7:15 pm.

The New London Tigers will also be looking for their first win of the season at home tonight when they clash with Tri-County, who is 1-0 after beating Twin Cedars last Friday. Dom Lopez is tied with the team lead in touchdowns with 3 total.

WACO will be at home against HLV tonight. The Warriors are led by seniors Isaac Oswald and Simeon Reichenbach. The Warriors won this matchup last year in a blowout 41-13.

Winfield-Mt. Union will travel to clash with Iowa Valley, who lost a close one last week 78 to 74. Two talented athletes highlight this matchup, with the Wolves touting Cam Buffington, who totaled 270 yards last week, while Iowa Valley has dual threat quarterback Evan Kearney who threw for 202 yards and rushed for 181 yards for a total of 9 touchdowns in the loss last week.

Fairfield’s will be facing off against Ottumwa. The combination of Tate Allen and Max Weaton will make it difficult for the Bulldogs to cover. Ottumwa defeated the Trojans 7-0 in last year’s matchup.

High School Volleyball

WACO defeated Hillcrest Academy in straight sets by scores of 25-14, 25-19, and 25-17. The Warriors next game will be against Lone Tree at home on September 6th.

Winfield-Mt. Union’s next game is Saturday, September 3rd, when the Wolves compete at the English Valleys Tournament. Melina Oepping leads the team in kills with 28, followed by Bradie Buffington with 27. Keely Malone paces the team with 96 assists.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

It is the start of a busy day for Tiger athletics, as Coach Baldassarre will lead her volleyball squad to the Jimmy John’s Classic with the first match being against Graceland University at 1 pm. Every coach has their phrases and Baladassarre applied hers in their first match of the season.

Men’s soccer is looking for their first win of the season against Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois at 1 pm. The Olivet Nazarene Tigers are 2-1 on the young season.

Cross Country for both the men and women starts tonight in Cedar Rapids at the Corridor Cross Country Clash at 5:45 pm. Faith Younce leads the women’s team with her seventh-place finish in conference last year. Logan Lucas anchors the men’s team, as he was named Second-Team All-Conference last season.

The Tigers look to bounce back on the gridiron Saturday, September 3rd, against Missouri Baptist University. Both teams are 0-1 after losing their first game of the season. The Tigers tout an impressive defense headlined by Major Niccum, who was named the NSAA Defensive Player of the Week for his 15-tackle performance against Tabor. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 pm.

College Football

The Iowa Hawkeye’s get their season underway tomorrow, September 3rd, against South Dakota State at 11 am. Iowa State start their season tomorrow as well when they face off against Southeast Missouri State at 1 pm. You can listen to the Hawkeye’s on the FM, and Cyclones on the AM here on KILJ.

Dale R. McSorley

Dale R. McSorley, 64, of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.

A graveside funeral service for Dale will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, September 6 at the Bethel Cemetery, rural Wapello, IA. Friends may call from 2 PM to 8 PM on Monday, September 5 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 2-4 PM on Monday.

Dale Russell McSorley was born July 8, 1958 in Jacksonville, FL, as his father was stationed there with the US Navy. He was the son of Jimmie Lynn and Maxine Joy (Jamison) McSorley. As a young child, Dale moved with his family back to Iowa. He graduated from Winfield High School.

Dale married Velda White. The couple later divorced. The then married Pam Chapman. The couple later divorced. Dale then married Dawn Stewart, and the couple later divorced.

At age 19, Dale began work for the State of Iowa as the Power Plant Manager for the Mt. Pleasant Correctional Institute. Dale retired after 30+ years of service. He worked for a time for Iowa Wesleyan University after his job at the prison.

Dale taught courses in handgun carry and conceal. He was a member of the NRA and the AMHA – American Miniature Horse Association. He also belonged to a Jeep club, as he loved to drive his Jeep. In his other spare time, Dale could be found antiquing and scouring parcels of land with his metal detector.

Survivors include his 3 children – Mark McSorley and his wife Gina of New London, Kayle Langas of Dubuque and Kim White and her husband Tony of Indianola; a brother – Joe McSorley and his wife Pam and a sister, Cindy Cozine, all of Winfield, and 8 grandchildren.

His parents precede him in death.

WACO’s next game will be tomorrow, September 1st, against Hillcrest Academy. The Warriors come into the game with a 3-0 record with seniors Ellah Kissell and Grace Coble leading the team in kills with 16 apiece. Coble also leads the team in assists with 38.

1971 – Danny Murtaugh of the Pittsburgh Pirates gave his lineup card to the umpire with the names of nine black baseball players on it. This was a first for Major League Baseball.

1998 – Mark McGwire, of the St. Louis Cardinals, hit his 56th and 57th homeruns to set a new National League record. He would eventually reach a total of 70 for the season on September 27.

 

1999 – Twenty-two of major league baseball’s 68 permanent umpires were replaced. The problem arose from their union’s failed attempt to force an early start to negotiations for a new labor contract.
