Jo Ann Shannon

Jo Ann Shannon passed away peacefully on August 27, 2022 at the age of 84 surrounded by her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma, loyal friend, and thoughtful listener.

Jo was born on March 2, 1938 to Evelyn and Harry Kosnar and raised in Clutier, Iowa before going to Iowa State University to study Child Development. While at Iowa State, she met and married the love of her life, veterinarian Don Shannon, in 1958. They have been married for 64 years. Jo and Don had a devoted partnership, where Jo worked alongside Don running operations for the veterinary clinics, in addition to raising four children: Sherry (Stephen) Boeding, Steve (Jennifer) Shannon, Cindy (Doug) Hagan, and Sue (Eric) Thomas. They also have a foreign exchange daughter, Gea Peute, from the Netherlands. Jo and Don were united in their strong Catholic faith, including attending mass, praying before meals, and praying each night before bed.

After leaving the nest, her children came back often with her 10 grandchildren, and eventually her 4 great-grandchildren. Jo loved nature and our national parks. She shared this love with her family by holding yearly gatherings at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado, for the better part of three decades. As a hobby photographer and world traveler, Jo completed her lifelong goal of traveling to all 50 states. Her camera rolls are filled with flowers, birds, deer, laughter, and smiles. Jo’s way of viewing the world can be best exemplified in her favorite song, “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. She was a skilled seamstress and made many clothes for herself and her family over the years. Jo even made her wedding dress and then had to make it a second time after the first dress was destroyed in a house fire two weeks before the wedding.

In addition to her devotion to her family, Jo loved the community of Houghton. She served on the Houghton Town Council and the St. Paul Daughters of Isabella. Jo coordinated and organized the Southeast Iowa Veterinary Medical Association for many years. She organized the Houghton Bloodmobile for over 40 years. Jo played the organ in St. John’s Catholic Church for more Sundays than she could count; her family will continue to fondly remember her playing the organ for the Christmas Eve services. She gifted her organ playing income to youth in her community. Jo volunteered in the Fort Madison Community Hospital Gift Shop for many years. Her family and friends will remember her rosettes and peppermint cookies she made each holiday season.

Jo loved the youth of Iowa, working as a 4-H volunteer leader, serving as a school board member for Marquette High School, and crocheting hundreds of hand-made hats for newborn babies at the Ft. Madison Community Hospital.

Jo’s lifelong love of learning was demonstrated through her involvement with Book Club, Study Club, Art Club, and taking classes at Apple Stores. She loved sharing knowledge with others by mailing newspaper clippings to family and friends.

In addition to being business partners for over 60 years, Jo and Don spent time watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, playing Bridge, playing nightly games of FreeCell Solitaire, and watching educational programs on the Iowa PBS Network.

Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Evelyn and Harry Kosnar, and sister, Jean Miller. Jo is survived by her husband, Don, and their 4 children, 10 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 1, 2022 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Houghton, Iowa, with Reverend Dan Dorau as Celebrant. Following Mass, her family will greet friends at a luncheon at the Houghton Knights of Columbus Hall/Rural Life Center, Houghton. Per Jo’s wishes, her body has been donated to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to honor the legacy of Jo to Iowa PBS. This can be done online via the Iowa PBS website (iowapbs.org/support/give/memorial) through the Memorial Gift section or checks can be mailed to: Iowa PBS Foundation, Attn: Memorial Gifts, P.O. Box 6400, Johnston, IA 50131-6400. Barr-Holtkamp Funeral Home is honored to serve the Shannon Family; an online guest book may be found at www.barrholtkampfuneralhome.com.

High School Football Recap

To start off this recap we go to Fairfield where the Trojans got off to a quick start against the Mt. Pleasant Panthers and kept that lead winning 41 to 20. Jacob Richtman threw two touchdowns, one to Garrett Cook and the other to Wyatt Woodsmall. On the other side, Max Weaton caught four touchdown passes for the Trojans. The Panthers will defend their home field against Washington, who defeated Burlington 21 to 14 thanks to Tayven Stuart as he ran for 120 yards and all 3 of the Demon’s touchdowns, while Fairfield will play Ottumwa.

WACO handled Springville 57 to 22 with Isaac Oswald completing all of his passes and tossing a touchdown with Simeon Reichenbach rushing for 99 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Warriors. They will be at home this week against the 0-1 HLV.

Winfield-Mt. Union held off a comeback effort by the Moravia Mohawks winning a shootout 64 to 50. Cam Buffington ran all over the field, going off for 270 total yards and 5 total touchdowns, and even added a sack on defense. David Garcia added an interception for the defensive effort. The Wolves will travel to play Iowa Valley who is 1-1 after losing a barnburner to BGM 78 to 74.

The New London Tigers lost their replacement game to Clarksville in another close contest, 38 to 24. Dom Lopez threw for 77 yards and a touchdown, all of which to Evan Reed. The Panthers won 2 out of their 5 games over the weekend at the Grinnell tournament. Their first two games they won in straight sets over Lynnville-Sully and Iowa Valley with the closest set coming against Iowa Valley where they won 21 to 16. Unfortunately, Dallas Center-Grimes and Carlisle defeated the Panthers in straight sets. The last game of the weekend was a rematch with Iowa Valley where the Tigers were able to best the Panthers in the third set 15 to 12 to take the match. The Varsity’s next game will be at home against Fairfield, August 30th, who touts a 2-3 record on the season.

Iowa Wesleyan Weekend Recap

The Tigers were in a defensive battle of the gridiron over the weekend, but they couldn’t cage the Blue Jays fast enough as they fell to Tabor College 17-13. The only scoring that took place in the first half was a safety awarded to Tabor after a goal line stop by the Tigers defense caused a turnover on downs. Iowa Wesleyan started with the ball in the second half and took advantage immediately when Gavin Esquivel connected with Asaivien McWilliams for a 29-yard touchdown pass. Lucas Mosqueda added a 30-yard field goal 4 minutes later to make it a 10-2 Tiger lead. Tabor then scored the next 9 points of the game to take a 11-10 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Tigers responded with a Mosqueda 32-yard field goal with 11:12 left in the game. Unfortunately, too many mistakes highlighted the game for Iowa Wesleyan as a penalty prolonged a Blue Jay drive that resulted in a 5-yard touchdown run, resulting in the final score 17 to 13. Esquivel threw for 393 yards and one touchdown. Jaden Harris and Tyler Ball each eclipsed the one-hundred-yard mark in receiving yards. Major Niccum led the way in tackles with 15, while Jaheem Hampton had an interception and Jarius Evans forced and recovered a fumble. The Tigers travel to play Missouri Baptist University September 3rd looking for their first win of the season.

Women’s soccer fell to St. Mary of the Woods 5 to 3 over the weekend. After the Pomeroy’s scored the only goal of the first half, the second half led to an offensive showcase. Despite outshooting the Pomeroy’s 19 to 13, the Tigers were unable to stop Sierra Mullins from scoring a hat-trick. Marta Cuenca Carcel scored in the 46th minute, Jaycee Page got her first goal of her Iowa Wesleyan career, and Desire’ Adams scored the final goal of the game in the 88th minute. The Tigers look to get head coach Bobby Lynch his first win against Clarke University at 1 pm on September 4th.

Two Upcoming Mount Pleasant Community Theatre Events

Mount Pleasant Community Theatre is planning two events in the near future.  One will be a joint event with the Pioneer Cemetery Commission in September.  The two entities are bringing some of our community’s founders to life on Saturday, September 17 at 2:00 p.m. in Old City Cemetery.  A few of the people being “brought to life” are Presley Saunders, General Samuel Brazelton, Dianna Bowen, and Valentine Kammerer.  There  is a total of 16 people coming to life to share their story.  People have the opportunity to visit their grave sites at their leisure and hear their stories.  Community Theatre, the Cemetery Commission and some civil war re-enactors along with community members have joined forces for this event.

Community Theatre is also doing a production of the Grimm Brothers Spectaculathon in October.  It gives a twist to the Grimm Brothers stories and will be held in conjunction with Old Thrashers the last weekend in October.  It will be held at the Old Theatre Museum in the basement where the Toby Shows are held.  It will be held on October 28, 29, and 30 with shows on Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 2:00 p.m.  Rehearsals have just started for it.

MP School Board Site Committee Meeting

The Mount Pleasant Board of Education SITE COMMITTEE will meet at 4:00 PM on Monday, August 29, 2022, at the Central office to review/discuss the HVAC System Upgrade. The meeting is open to the public and patrons are welcome.
