High School Football Recap
To start off this recap we go to Fairfield where the Trojans got off to a quick start against the Mt. Pleasant Panthers and kept that lead winning 41 to 20. Jacob Richtman threw two touchdowns, one to Garrett Cook and the other to Wyatt Woodsmall. On the other side, Max Weaton caught four touchdown passes for the Trojans. The Panthers will defend their home field against Washington, who defeated Burlington 21 to 14 thanks to Tayven Stuart as he ran for 120 yards and all 3 of the Demon’s touchdowns, while Fairfield will play Ottumwa.
WACO handled Springville 57 to 22 with Isaac Oswald completing all of his passes and tossing a touchdown with Simeon Reichenbach rushing for 99 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Warriors. They will be at home this week against the 0-1 HLV.
Winfield-Mt. Union held off a comeback effort by the Moravia Mohawks winning a shootout 64 to 50. Cam Buffington ran all over the field, going off for 270 total yards and 5 total touchdowns, and even added a sack on defense. David Garcia added an interception for the defensive effort. The Wolves will travel to play Iowa Valley who is 1-1 after losing a barnburner to BGM 78 to 74.
The New London Tigers lost their replacement game to Clarksville in another close contest, 38 to 24. Dom Lopez threw for 77 yards and a touchdown, all of which to Evan Reed. Reen Seberg and Borden Pickle each added a touchdown on the ground. The Tigers will face off against Tri-County at home next week who is fresh off a 60 to 14 win over Twin Cedars.
Mt. Pleasant Volleyball
The Panthers won 2 out of their 5 games over the weekend at the Grinnell tournament. Their first two games they won in straight sets over Lynnville-Sully and Iowa Valley with the closest set coming against Iowa Valley where they won 21 to 16. Unfortunately, Dallas Center-Grimes and Carlisle defeated the Panthers in straight sets. The last game of the weekend was a rematch with Iowa Valley where the Tigers were able to best the Panthers in the third set 15 to 12 to take the match. The Varsity’s next game will be at home against Fairfield, August 30th, who touts a 2-3 record on the season.
High School Volleyball
Winfield-Mt. Union went 2-4 over the weekend at the West Branch Tournament. They won the third set against Prince of Peace and defeated Iowa City Regina in straight sets. Wapello, West Branch, Don Bosco, and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont all got the best of the Wolves. Melina Oepping led the Wolves in kills with 22, Keely Malone had 59 assists, Tessa Huston had 5 aces, and Keetyn Townsley had 67 digs over the weekend. They are now 3-4 on the season and their next game is September 3rd when they compete at the English Valleys tournament.
Holy Trinity Catholic participated in the Skip Anderson Tournament over the weekend, finishing 2-3. The Crusaders started their day with a win over Fort Madison in straight sets, but dropped their next three games over Wapsie Valley, Pella Christian in straight sets, and North Polk in 3 sets. They rounded out the tournament on a win over Red Oak in two close sets, 21-16 and 21-18. Their next games will be August 30th when they compete at the Wapello tournament.
Iowa Wesleyan Weekend Recap
The Tigers were in a defensive battle of the gridiron over the weekend, but they couldn’t cage the Blue Jays fast enough as they fell to Tabor College 17-13. The only scoring that took place in the first half was a safety awarded to Tabor after a goal line stop by the Tigers defense caused a turnover on downs. Iowa Wesleyan started with the ball in the second half and took advantage immediately when Gavin Esquivel connected with Asaivien McWilliams for a 29-yard touchdown pass. Lucas Mosqueda added a 30-yard field goal 4 minutes later to make it a 10-2 Tiger lead. Tabor then scored the next 9 points of the game to take a 11-10 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Tigers responded with a Mosqueda 32-yard field goal with 11:12 left in the game. Unfortunately, too many mistakes highlighted the game for Iowa Wesleyan as a penalty prolonged a Blue Jay drive that resulted in a 5-yard touchdown run, resulting in the final score 17 to 13. Esquivel threw for 393 yards and one touchdown. Jaden Harris and Tyler Ball each eclipsed the one-hundred-yard mark in receiving yards. Major Niccum led the way in tackles with 15, while Jaheem Hampton had an interception and Jarius Evans forced and recovered a fumble. The Tigers travel to play Missouri Baptist University September 3rd looking for their first win of the season.
Women’s soccer fell to St. Mary of the Woods 5 to 3 over the weekend. After the Pomeroy’s scored the only goal of the first half, the second half led to an offensive showcase. Despite outshooting the Pomeroy’s 19 to 13, the Tigers were unable to stop Sierra Mullins from scoring a hat-trick. Marta Cuenca Carcel scored in the 46th minute, Jaycee Page got her first goal of her Iowa Wesleyan career, and Desire’ Adams scored the final goal of the game in the 88th minute. The Tigers look to get head coach Bobby Lynch his first win against Clarke University at 1 pm on September 4th.
