Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant Varsity Baseball had a pair of games Monday night against Fairfield. The Panthers were defeated 4-2 in Game 1. Mount Pleasant Junior Carter Amos went 1 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs. Senior Cooper Keldgord pitched 4.2 innings allowing 3 runs, 2 earned on 5 hits with 5 walks and striking out 4. Mount Pleasant was victorious in Game 2 of the night by a score of 3-2. Senior Lincoln Henriksen turned in a 1 for 3 performance at the plate in Game 2. Sophomore Ben Newton pitched 4 full innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks and striking out 1. MP Varsity Baseball will be back in action Wednesday night for a matchup with Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM.

Mount Pleasant Varsity Softball had two contests against Fairfield Monday night. MP was defeated in Game 1 by a score of 11-0. Savana Walls went 1 for 2 at the plate. Myah Starr pitched 3 full innings, allowing 4 runs, none earned. The Panthers were defeated 13-3 in Game 2 of the night. Jersey Beachy went 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs. Ella McNamee pitched 2.2 innings, allowing 8 runs, 5 earned. “We need to improve in all phases of the game and play complimentary softball. Great group of players, proud of their resiliency.” Panthers Head Coach Mike Beason said. Panther Softball will be back on the field on Thursday night for a doubleheader at Fort Madison. The first game begins at 5:30 PM with the second game starting at 7:30 PM and you can catch live coverage on 105.5 KILJ.

New London

New London Varsity Baseball was victorious over Pekin by a score of 10-0 Monday night. Senior Camden Kasel was 1 for 1 at the plate with 2 RBIs, a walk, and a home run. Senior Seth Bailey pitched the complete 5-inning game, allowing 2 hits and striking out 5. Parker Testa had a chance to speak with New London Head Coach Brad Helmerson following the game and he had this to say on what he liked from his team’s performance. “Cam started with a home run there early and then we kind of got rolling from there. Fundamental baseball is what got us here and that’s what’s hopefully going to take us the rest of the way.” 12-0 New London will be back on the field tonight as they will take on Cardinal on the road. That game is set to begin at 7:00 PM.

New London Varsity Softball was defeated by Pekin 5-4 Monday night. Sophomore Sophie Malott went 3 for 4 with 1 RBI. Marlianna Woodsmall pitched the complete game allowing 5 runs on 6 hits with 2 walks and striking out 3. Tiger Softball is back on the field tonight as they will take on Cardinal on the road. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM.

Winfield-M. Union

Winfield-Mt. Union Varsity Softball was defeated by Louisa-Muscatine 11-1 Monday night. Wolves Softball will be back in action tonight as they will host Mediapolis. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.

NBA

The Golden State Warriors were victorious over the Boston Celtics in Game 6 of the NBA Finals 104-94 to take a 3-2 series lead. Warriors guard Stephen Curry’s streak of 233 straight games with a 3-pointer made ended as Curry shot 0 for 9 from beyond the arc.

1994 – The New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup by defeating the Vancouver Canucks. It was the first time the Rangers had won the cup in 54 years.

Earl E. Ennis

Earl E. Ennis, 81, of Brighton, Illinois and formerly of the Des Moines area passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at his home in Brighton, Illinois.

Memorial Services will be held on Friday, June 17, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.  A memorial has been established in his memory.

Arrest Made in Car Theft Investigation

On June 9, 2022, at approximately 1:17AM, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a stolen vehicle from the 1600 Grid of 265th Street near Oakland Mills, Iowa. It was found that a male subject had stolen a blue, 2005, Chrysler 300 from a residence and fled from the area. After an investigation into the stolen vehicle, officers attempted to locate the subject in the Mount Pleasant area at a local apartment complex. The male subject was located and identified as Edward (A.K.A. JT) Antwan Easley (23 years of age) of the Mount Pleasant area. Edward was placed under arrest and transported to the Henry County Jail without incident. The vehicle was located at the same apartment complex. Edward Easley was charged with Theft in the Second Degree, a Class D Felony. He was also given a citation for operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license. The Mount Pleasant Police Department assisted with this investigation.

Monica Kay Amberger (final arrangements)

Monica Kay Amberger, 49, of West Point, Iowa, passed away at 5:40 a.m. Thursday, June 9, 2022, at her home in West Point.

She was born on June 14, 1972, in Long Beach, California, the daughter of Charles William Wellington and Judy Ann Hill. She attended Loara High School in Anaheim, California. On September 25, 2019, she married Kristopher Amberger in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Monica was a vibrant, funny, caring and giving person who enjoyed life. She loved music, movies, arrowhead and mushroom hunting, the beach, animals including her 140lb dog Oreo, coffee, flowers and the color pink. Most of all, Monica loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband: Kristopher Amberger of West Point, Iowa; daughter: Carissa (Dustin) Burke of New London, Iowa; sons: Tanner (Randi) Woodsmall of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Jack O’Keefe of Grand Rapids, Michigan; father: Charles Wellington of Las Vegas, Nevada; mother: Judy Hill of Burlington, Iowa; step-father: Tom Martin of New London, Iowa; three granddaughters: Laila, Leanne, and Liliana; two sisters: Michelle Wellington of Anaheim, California, Tammy Wellington of Burlington, Iowa and her brother: Charles (Shanon) Wellington of New London, Iowa. Also, surviving are uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her father-in-law and mother-in-law.

A memorial has been established in her memory to PAW Animal Shelter.

Her body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation. Monica was proud to be an organ donor.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2022, at Schmitz Funeral Home of West Point, Iowa.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2022, at Schmitz Funeral Home of West Point, Iowa with Father Dennis Hoffman officiating.

Mount Pleasant JV and Varsity Baseball had their games against Mid-Prairie cancelled on Friday due to weather. Mount Pleasant JV Baseball will play tonight at 5:30 PM against Fairfield at Fairfield Middle School. Mount Pleasant Varsity Baseball will play tonight at 7:30 PM against Fairfield at the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex in Mount Pleasant.

Mount Pleasant Varsity Softball was defeated by Mid-Prairie by a score of 11-1 Friday night. Junior Jersey Beachy went 2 for 4 with a double. Junior Jayden Housh finished the game 1 for 2 with 1 RBI. Sophomore Madison Helling pitched 3 innings allowing 10 runs, 4 earned on 7 hits with 2 walks. New London Varsity Baseball continues their great season as they were victorious over Hillcrest Academy Friday night by a score of 8-1 to improve to 11-0. Senior Dereck Santiago went 2 for 2 with a double and 4 RBIs. Senior Tucker Gibbar went 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Sophomore Brendan Richey pitched 5.1 innings allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits with 3 walks and striking out 6. Tiger Baseball will be back in action tonight for a matchup with Pekin. New London Varsity Softball had a pair of games on Saturday. The first game resulted in a 4-1 loss to Van Buren County. Senior Ashlyn McSorley went 2 for 2 with 1 RBI. Junior Elly Manning pitched the complete 6 inning game for New London, allowing 4 runs, no earned runs with 2 hits. Central Lee defeated New London in game 2 on Saturday by a score of 11-1. Senior Ashlyn McSorley went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI. Junior Elly Manning went 1 for 2 with a double. Megan Lee pitched the complete 6 inning game, allowing 11 runs, 5 earned on 8 hits with 4 walks and striking out 1. Winfield-Mt. Union

Winfield-Mt.Union Varsity Baseball defeated Danville 4-3 on Friday to gain their first win of the season. Wolves Baseball is back on the field tonight as they will go on the road to take on Louisa-Muscatine. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.

Jerrold Peter “Jerry” Stukerjurgen

Jerrold Peter “Jerry” Stukerjurgen, 56, of of Salem, Iowa, passed away at 2:07 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

He was born on August 29, 1965, in Fort Madison, Iowa, the son of Ron and Carol (Lohman) Stukerjurgen. On June 16, 1990, he married Amie Jean Holtkamp at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife: Amie; daughter: Jena (Levi) Duwa of Kalona, Iowa; son: Jacob Stukerjurgen of Salem, Iowa; granddaughter: Tatum Beth Duwa; parents: Ron and Carol Stukerjurgen of Houghton, Iowa; one brother: Jay (Ingrid) Stukerjurgen of Polk City, Iowa; two sisters: Judy (Adrian) Steffensmeier of Fort Madison, Iowa and Jan (Micheal) Hunting of Robins, Iowa. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter: Beth Marie Stukerjurgen; brother: Joseph Stukerjurgen; father and mother-in-law: Melvin and Barb Holtkamp.

Jerry achieved his associate degree in Animal Science at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. He was co-owner/manager of Quality Plus Feeds in St. Paul. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton, the Houghton Knights of Columbus and Houghton Fire and Rescue, where he was a first responder and past fire chief. Jerry enjoyed working and growing Quality Plus Feeds and his hog business, being outdoors, watching his children play sports and being involved in the community. Most of all he cherished spending time with family, friends and being a grandfather.

Friends may call after 12:00 noon Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Houghton, where the family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. and a Christian wake service will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the church.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Houghton with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant.

Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery in Houghton.

A memorial has been established in his memory for Lee County Fair 4-H and FFA Livestock Programs, St. John’s Catholic Church or Houghton Fire and Rescue
