Prep Volleyball: Holy Trinity, Notre Dame Clinch State Berths

No. 5 Holy Trinity 3, Lamoni 0

Holy Trinity started fast and never let off the gas as the fifth-ranked Crusaders rolled to a three set win over unranked Lamoni yesterday at Ottumwa Middle School.

The win propels Holy Trinity to the Class 1A State Volleyball tournament.

Sophomore hitter Natalie Randolph and her sister Kassie led the way in the front row with 12 and six kills respectively.

The Crusader block was on fire last night with Kayla Box and Reagan Holvoet combining for nine blocks, frustrating Lamoni hitters all night long.

Holy Trinity led wire-to-wire except for a brief Lamoni lead at 2-0 in the third set.

The win marks Melissa Freesmeier’s 20th trip to the state volleyball tournament, cementing her status as one of the very best to ever do it.

She’s taken Holy Trinity 13 times in 16 years before leading West Point Marquette seven times.

Holy Trinity improved to 32-10, while Lamoni ends their great run 29-5.

No. 1 Notre Dame 3, Easton Valley 0

The defending state champion Notre Dame Nikes looked strong from set one as they cruised to a sweep victory over Easton Valley in yesterday’s Class 1A, Region 7 championship.

The Nikes picked up 25-12, 25-13 and 25-17 wins to advance.

Gabby Deery led the Nikes with 12 kills, while Abby Korschgen chipped in with eight.

Notre Dame has been tabbed as the No. 1 overall seed at the state tournament, they’ll take on eighth-seeded Tri-Center, Monday night.

The Nikes upped their ledger to 35-8, Easton Valley fell to 21-9.

No. 2 Wilton 3, Mediapolis 0

The second-ranked Wilton Beavers rode their star hitters Kelsey Drake to a three-set win over Mediapolis, ending the Bullettes dream run of the state tournament just one match short.

The Bullettes, who finished the year 14-24, suffered 17 losses to either ranked opponents or teams in a larger class.

Kennedy Welliver and Emma Hastings paced the Bullettes front row, with Welliver also chipping in with six assists.

Wilton will play Osage next Tuesday in the first round of the Class 2A State Tournament.
