High School Track and Field

The Mt. Pleasant and WACO boys’ and girls’ teams will travel to Washington for the Demon Relays today.

The New London and Mediapolis girls’ and boys’ teams will travel to West Burlington for a meet today. 

The boy’s meet at Pekin tonight has been canceled. The Van Buren County girls’ team will head to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont tonight.

The WACO relays have been rescheduled for Monday, April 8th, with the Van Buren County boys’ and girls’ teams in attendance. 

The Danville and Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ teams will travel to Wapello for a meet on Tuesday, April 9th, while the Central Lee, Winfield-Mt. Union and Danville girls’ teams will head to Fort Madison for a meet on the same day. 

The Central Lee boys’ team will travel to Fairfield for a meet on April 9th. 

High School Soccer

The WACO boys’ team will look to continue their success against Hillcrest Academy tonight at 5 pm at home. 

Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union will travel to Mid-Prairie tonight with the girls’ playing first at 5 pm. 

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will travel to Fairfield tomorrow, April 5th, at 5 pm, while the boys’ will take on the Trojans at home tonight. 

The Mediapolis girls’ team will take on West Liberty tomorrow at 5 pm in a road matchup. 

The Central Lee versus Burlington Notre Dame games scheduled for tonight have been postponed. A make-up date has yet to be determined. 

The Danville boys’ team will battle Mediapolis in a road matchup tonight at 5 pm.

High School Tennis

Mt. Pleasant will face off against Fort Madison tonight with the girls’ playing at home and the boys’ team on the road. 

High School Golf

The Central Lee/Notre Dame golf meets scheduled for today have been postponed to April 16th. 

The WACO golf meet against Hillcrest Academy has been postponed for tonight. A make-up date has yet to be determined. 

The New London girls’ and boys’ teams will host a triangular today with Van Buren County also participating. 

The Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ and girls’ teams will travel to Columbus to participate in a meet today.

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will play at Fairfield Golf and Country Club today. The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team had their meet at Fort Madison postponed for tonight. A new date has yet to be determined. 

Southeastern Community College

For baseball, SCC will face off against Marshalltown Community College today in a doubleheader on the road. 

The SCC softball team had their doubleheader scheduled for yesterday postponed. The Blackhawks will take on Marshalltown Community College on Monday, April 8th in a road matchup.

College Basketball

The #1-seed Iowa women’s team will travel to Cleveland to compete against UConn in the Final Four tomorrow, April 5th, at 8:30 pm. 

In back-to-back years, senior Sharon Goodman was the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the Division I Women’s Basketball Championship. The award goes to the student-athlete who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level of their sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among their peers. Goodman is majoring in health studies and currently has a 4.0 GPA.

Caitlin Clark continues reigning in awards as she was named Naismith National Player of the Year for the second year in a row. The award goes to the most outstanding men’s and women’s basketball players who achieve tremendous on-court success. Hard to argue against the choice as Clark was tabbed Big Ten Player of the Year, became the first player to finish first in assists and scoring in back-to-back years, became the first player in Division-I to record back-to-back seasons of scoring over 1,000 points, and owns every career scoring mark for college basketball.

 March Madness

The KILJ bracket challenge, sponsored by The Press Box and Wiley’s Interior Furnishings and Design, is down to the final four and 21 of the 34 brackets still have a champion in the dance. The Final Four starts on Saturday, April 6th, at 5:09 pm.

1911 – Hugh Chalmers, an automaker, announced a change in his baseball MVP award structure. From that point on, Chalmers would give the award to the player who “should prove himself as the most important and useful player to his club…”

1948 – A’s manager Connie Mack, who is 84 years old, challenges Clark Griffith, the 78 year-old owner of the Senators, to a foot race from third base to home plate. It ends in a tie.

1986 – Wayne Gretzky set the NHL record with his 213th point of the season. Finished the season with 215 points as the record still stands.
