High School Basketball

Mt. Pleasant will travel to Washington for a conference matchup on Friday, December 15th, with the girls’ game scheduled to start at 6 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 5:45 pm. 

The Mediapolis girls’ team has now scored at least 80 points in five of their first seven games of the season as the Bulldogs defeated New London 87-19. Grace Holsteen led the team with 26 points. The boys team also picked up the win for Mediapolis with a 16-point win over New London, 58-42. The Bulldogs will face off against Burlington Notre Dame on Friday with the girls playing at 6 pm. 

New London will host West Burlington on Friday with the girls going at 6 pm followed by the boys game. 

WACO swept Highland last night with the girls winning 44-29 and the boys’ breezing past the Huskies 76-22. Emma Wagler led the Warriors in points with 13 on the night followed by Brenna Graber’s 10 points. For the boys’ team, four players finished in double figures with Hunter Hughes scoring 16 points and Isaac Rich, Clayton Miller, and Colton Liechty all cashing in for 10 points apiece. The Warriors will travel to take on Hillcrest Academy on Friday with the girls’ game scheduled for 6 pm. 

The Van Buren County boys’ team fell to Danville last night 68-13. The girls’ team suffered the same fate against the Bears, losing 61-22. The Warriors will compete against Holy Trinity Catholic in a road matchup on Friday with game one at 6 pm. 

The #15 Holy Trinity Catholic girls team picked up their first loss of the season after an overtime thriller went Burlington Notre Dame’s way 61-57. The boys’ team for the Crusaders was led by Luke Hellige’s 31 points in their 66-57 victory over the Nikes last night. 

The Central Lee boys’ team had their wings clipped by West Burlington last night 74-39. The girls’ team will take on Danville in a road matchup at 6 pm on Friday, while the boys’ team will play Danville tomorrow, December 14th, at 7:30 pm. 

Winfield-Mt. Union will take on Columbus on Friday with the girls playing at 6 pm. 

High School Wrestling

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team will compete on Saturday, December 16th, at Cedar Rapids-Prairie. 

The WACO girls will compete on Saturday at Chariton. 

Mt. Pleasant will travel to Fort Madison tomorrow, December 14th, to compete in a dual. 

The New London boys’ team will compete at Pekin tomorrow in a dual. 

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ team will travel to Van Buren County tomorrow for a triangular. 

The WACO boys’ team will head to Mediapolis tomorrow to compete in a triangular. 

High School Bowling

Mt. Pleasant will take on Burlington on Friday, December 15th. 

College Signing

Nate Dismang will officially be a Blackhawk next year as he signed his letter of commitment to Southeastern Community College (SCC) to play golf yesterday. The Mt. Pleasant senior was the second-best golfer on the squad last year as he averaged a score of 88.33 per 18 holes.

Dismang contributed several factors into his decision to choose SCC, including distance and money saved by not paying for housing, but, namely, he believes Head Coach Mike Swink will help him improve,

“I’m believing that SCC is just a great place and I’m glad that I’m able to have a place to move on with my academics. I’m just glad that I got a hold of Coach Swink, and he helped me out.”

Dismang will be following in his mother and brother’s footsteps as he decided to major in business. 

The Panthers will start their season in the spring with a match at Fort Madison’s Sheaffer Memorial Golf Park on April 4th.

College Football

Iowa State University will take on Memphis in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis on December 29th at 2:30 pm. The Cyclones defeated Memphis in the 2017 AutoZone Liberty Bowl 21-20. 

#20 Iowa will face off against #25 Tennessee in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on January 1st at noon. 

College Basketball

The #4 Iowa women’s team will compete against Cleveland State on Saturday, December 16th, at 6 pm. 

The Iowa State women’s team will host Troy on Sunday, December 17th, at 12 pm. 

The Iowa State men’s team will take on Florida A&M on Sunday at 5 pm. 

The Iowa men’s team will look to get back in the win column on Saturday at 3:30 pm against Florida A&M.
