High School Basketball

WACO will host Winfield-Mt. Union tonight with the girls’ game starting at 6 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will have the call with the pregame show at 5:45 pm. 

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will travel to Oskaloosa tonight at 7 pm. 

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will host Xavier tonight at 7 pm. 

Central Lee will travel to take on Burlington Notre Dame tonight with the girls playing at 6 pm. 

New London will compete against Danville tonight with the girls playing at 6 pm and the boys’ scheduled to play at 7:30 pm at home. 

Van Buren County will host West Burlington tonight with the girls’ game starting at 6 pm followed by the boys’ game. 

Mediapolis will host Holy Trinity Catholic tonight with the girls playing at 6 pm and the boys’ at 7:30 pm.  

High School Wrestling

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team competed at the Pekin Invitational last night and Josie Nelson finished in first place for the 140-pound weight class by fall. The Wildcats will compete on Saturday, December 9th, at Keokuk for an Invitational. 

The WACO girls’ team will compete on December 9th at Vinton-Shellsburg for a tournament. 

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will compete in a dual against Keokuk at home on Thursday. 

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will compete in a Triangular at home on Thursday. 

The New London boys’ team will travel to Wapello on Thursday to compete in a triangular. 

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ team will travel to Highland for a Triangular on Thursday, December 7th. 

The WACO boys’ will compete in a meet on Thursday at Pekin. 

High School Bowling

Mt. Pleasant will face off against Keokuk on Thursday, December 7th.

College Football

Iowa State University will take on Memphis in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis on December 29th at 2:30 pm. The Cyclones defeated Memphis in the 2017 AutoZone Liberty Bowl 21-20. 

#20 Iowa will face off against #25 Tennessee in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on January 1st at noon. 

College Basketball

The #4 Iowa women’s team will compete against Iowa State tomorrow, December 6th, at 6 pm in Ames. 

The Iowa men’s team was unable to conjure up an upset against #4 Purdue as the Boilermakers handled the Hawkeyes 87-68. Ben Krikke led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds. The Hawkeyes will take on Iowa State University on Thursday, December 7th, at 6:30 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM will be broadcasting the game. 

Owen Freeman has been tabbed Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the third time this season, tying Aaron White for the most in program history. Freeman tallied a career-high 16 points and five blocks against North Florida last week.

1968 – Future Hockey Hall of Fame center Phil Esposito of the Boston Bruins scores two goals in his goaltender brother Tony’s (also HOF) NHL debut for the Montreal Canadiens in a 2-2 tie.

1973 – Chicago Cubs Ron Santo becomes the first baseball player to invoke the 10-and-5 rule and veto his trade.
