Boys’ Prep Basketball: Mount Pleasant Cruises Needs OT for Regina; Other Prep Finals

Mount Pleasant 55, Regina 43 (OT) 

Mount Pleasant needed overtime to do it, but won their fourth straight 55-43 over Iowa City Regina last night.

Four Panthers scored in double figures, with Payton Hagans leading the way with 15 points.

Dewon Trent finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Owen Vansickel had 12 while Aidan Ashton had 10.

Mount Pleasant is now 8-9 on the season, meanwhile Iowa City Regina fell to 5-14.

The Regals were led by Landon Pietrzak’s game-high 19 points — he canned three triples.

New London 88, Central Lee 45 

New London stayed hot with an easy 88-45 win over Central Lee yesterday.

The Tigers jumped out to a 34-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, extending their leads to 37 at halftime.

Devon Swanson had 17 points to lead the Tigers. Blaise Porter finished with 16 points while Kooper Schulte continued his nice run of play with 13.

New London upped their ledger to 15-1, they’re now 13-1 in Super Conference play.

Winfield-Mount Union 60, Louisa-Muscatine 34 

Cam Buffington had 22 points and eight rebounds while Abram Edwards added 10 points as Winfield-Mount Union put it in automatic in a 60-34 win over Louisa-Muscatine.

Andrew Brown chipped in with eight points for the Wolves, who used a 24-9 third quarter run to pull away.

The win moved Winfield-Mount Union to 17-1 on the season.

Xander Bieri had 16 for the Falcons, who are now 2-15.

Danville 39, WACO 37 (OT) 

Danville scored the lone basket in overtime, holding on to a 39-37 thriller over WACO yesterday.

Drake Johnson had 11 points to lead the Bears while Caiden Gourley had 10.

Colten Leichty led the Warriors with eight points.

Danville improved to 16-2 overall and 12-2 in Super Conference play.

WACO is now 14-4.

Girls’ Prep Basketball: Winfield Wins, Mediapolis Stays Perfect; Other Prep Finals

Winfield-Mount Union 37, Louisa-Muscatine 32

Bradie Buffington had 12 points to lead the way as the Lady Wolves earned a hard-fought 37-32 senior night victory over Louisa-Muscatine yesterday.

Anna Anderson poured in nine points while Melina Oepping finished with seven.

Kaylee Corbin had 18 points for the Falcons, who dropped to 13-4.

Winfield-Mount Union improved to 16-3.

No. 10 (2A) Mediapolis 69, Wapello 37

The dream of the perfect season remained intact for No. 10 Mediapolis in a 69-37 win over Wapello, yesterday.

Hallie Mohr had a game-high 20 points while Payton Bush added 16 for the Bullettes.

Serah Shafer had 11 points and three helpers for the Arrows.

Mediapolis is now 18-0 and a perfect 14-0 in Super Conference showdowns.

Wapello dropped to 9-10.

Central Lee 67, New London 26

Alivia Myhre outscored New London herself with 28 points to lead Central Lee to a 67-26 win over New London.

Myhre drilled six triples while Makayla Morrison flirted with a triple double with 11 points, 11 boards and eight assists.

The Hawks led 23-5 at the end of the first quarter and improved to 12-7 on the year.

New London is 0-20.

Danville 62, WACO 32

Cassidy Yaley had 13 points as Danville stayed hot with a 62-32 win over WACO.

Taylor Moore came off the bench for 12 points while Kenna Furnald — a state track qualifier from a year ago — had 11.

Danville is now 9-10 and 8-7 in league play.

WACO slumped to 8-11.

Men’s College Basketball: Drake’s DeVries Named MVC Newcomer of the Week

Drake men’s basketball freshman swingman Tucker DeVries was selected as Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league announced yesterday.

DeVries helped the Bulldogs to a pair of victories this past week over Illinois State and Loyola with an average of 15.5 points per game.

Drake will play at Indiana State tonight before welcoming in in-state rival UNI to the Knapp Center on Saturday.

The Bulldogs are 16-6 this year and 7-2 in MVC play.

Men’s College Basketball: Iowa’s Murray Named to the Wooden Watch List

Iowa forward Keegan Murray has been named to the Wooden Award Top 20 watch list, the award announced Monday.

Murray is scoring 22.4 points per game — the fifth-most in the nation — and is shooting 56.5% from the field.

The Hawkeyes will hook up with No. 16 Ohio State tomorrow in Columbus, with tip scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Iowa is 14-7 overall and 4-6 in Big Ten play.
