Prep Volleyball: Mount Pleasant Loses, Winfield Wins, Other Prep Finals:

Albia 3, Mount Pleasant 0 

The Mount Pleasant volleyball team suffered their second loss in as many matches falling to Albia last night 3-0.

The Lady Dees won 25-17, 25-13, 25-11 to cruise to their sixth win of the season.

Mount Pleasant fell to 5-6.

The Panthers will be off until September 7th, when they’ll hook up with Burlington at home.

First serve is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

W-MU 3, Pekin 0 

Winfield-Mount Union got a strong performance from Bradie Buffington, who had ten kills as the Lady Wolves swept Pekin.

Winfield-Mount Union rolled to 25-9, 25-14, 25-11 win in order as they improved 4-3.

Keely Malone was sublime with the service, creating 16 assists.

Keetyn Townsley paced the back row with eight digs.

Winfield will play at Wapello Tuesday night.

Holy Trinity 3, Danville 0 

The No. 9 ranked Holy Trinity Crusader volleyball team raced out to a lead and never looked back, as they sprinted by Danville three sets to none.

Holy Trinity clinched the sweep with a 25-14 victory.

The Crusaders improved to 5-2.

Boys’ Cross Country: Danville-New London Rolls: 

The No. 1 Danville-New London boys’ cross country team had five top ten finishers, as they outclassed the rest of the field at the Pekin Invite, yesterday.

Ty Carr led the way with a scorching 16:46.

Alexander Julian finished third, Rylan Martin fifth, Seth Bailey sixth and AJ Bonnesen earned a seventh place mark.

Mediapolis’ Soloman Zaugg ended his race 10th, going 17:52.

Washington and Fairfield finished second and third in the team standings, respectively.

Girls’ Cross Country: Dennis Leads WACO in Keokuk, Danville-New London 5th:

Hannah Dennis led WACO with a time of 25:50 good for 22nd at yesterday’s Keokuk Invitational at Elks Fairview Golf Club.

Dennis was one of just four varsity runners for the Warriors.

Kirksville (MO.) won the event, while Fort Madison was runner-up.

West Burlington-Notre Dame’s Hadley Augustine was the meet runner-up.

Meanwhile in Pekin, the Washington Demon girls’ were crowned victors, while Danville-New London finished 5th.

They were paced by a 7th place finish by Kamryn Sherwood.

Prep Football: Friday Football Feast Week Two:

It’s yet another Friday Football Feast as we get set for the second week of the Iowa High School football season.

Tonight, our featured matchup takes us to Washington, as Mount Pleasant will battle the Demons in nonconference play.

Both teams are coming off losses — Washington 39-18 to Burlington, Mount Pleasant 27-18 to Fairfield — and are looking for their first win on the season.

Washington has won the last ten meetings between the two schools.

Kick is set for 7:30 p.m., coverage on KILJ-FM will begin at 7:00 p.m. with the Panther Tailgate Show.

In other area action No. 10 WACO will look to keep up their hot start when they take on H-L-V on the road.

College Football: Drake Smashes in Season Opener

The Drake University football team rolled to a 35-0 lead in the first half and never looked back as they defeated West Virginia Wesleyan 45-3.

Quarterback Ian Corwin threw for 180 yards and touchdown, while rushing for two additional scores.

Cross Robinson had 100 yards on the ground on 13 totes.

Former Mount Pleasant standout Kieran Kohorst finished with a two tackles including one for loss.

The Bulldogs, now 1-0, will take on Montana State next Saturday night on the road.

Kick is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
